Fixing a Spring

  • During an inspection in January, the crew took note that a spring wasn't sitting quite right on its pedestal. A few hours of shop time and the problem is fixed!

    So glad to see you guys use the forklift to pick the spring off... my back is perma goofed because I set one of the springs up on the 491 all by myself at 20 because, you know, manly man stuff, or something. Don't be dumb, folks.

    I love watching these because I know how much my dad would have loved it. He's been gone a long time now, but he was a tool and die maker, later a pattern maker, for Sandia Laboratories (under the AEC) and I remember how much he enjoyed his work. Keep them coming, I sure enjoy them.

    Outstanding job! Working smart all around. Is that particular pin a lubrication part? You would think there would be a grease zerk or oil cup above that wear point. Thanks! 😃👍

    i wonder if the wobbling in motion is to do the ruts worn in the drive tires. i know there are companies that have portable wheel grinding for diesel electric locomotives. but for steam you may have to create your own.. with a built in jack stand that fits very low between the drive wheels.. with an X Y adjustments for the grinder wheel and shaft.. the angle the shaft would be at would be adjustable too.. so you are grinding the tire surface not the flange in and out with the grinder to true the surface of the tire to the correct tapered profile..
    i don't know if that would work as you would have to live all the drive wheels off the track and use the steam to spin the wheels.. or pulling the rods and springs on a single axle and having rollers support it with some kind of drive to spin it from the end that is not powered while grinding. .
    an adjustable angle stone dresser would also need to be designed in... to keep the stone dressed as massive amounts of metal on the outside surface of the tires is ground down to the proper shape... so the wheels center between the rails instead of the rut riding back and forth across the top of the rails.. do you only need to do the front and rear driver and leave the middle drivers alone.. perhaps the service manual says.. i would probably use a K series Micro V belt using a 1996 ford van or truck 300 cubic inch ford straight six harmonic damper as the drive on the electric motor and any number of Alternator pulleys on the grinder drive shaft.. so you change the alternator pulley to effect actual ratio changes there are various sizes of Double row automotive clutch pulley bearings that might work as the grinder shaft bearings since they are cheap.. and handle all kinds of angular loads and speed easily.. letting you use a 2" bore grindstone.. you can get 5" 6" 7" and 8 with a 1" shaft bore.. www.mcmaster.com/products/grinding-wheels/heavy-removal-bench-and-pedestal-grinding-wheels-for-metals/ some dirt cheap...
    how many chains to the track in front of and behind the locomotive would be needed for safety.. will the pistons drive the unloaded wheel sets at a steady speed unloaded.. ????/ won't take but a few pounds of steam.. might not work as the axles are not up in the bearing blocks..
    just a few random thoughts from a mechanic..

      Sounds like something that doesn't cause cancer just in California. If it only causes cancer in California, it probably doesn't work.
