- Welp, we're doing it, we're really doing it. Restoring it and running it on the mainline (err, depending on your definition of mainline)! We launched our official press release (wfim.org/blog) and started fundraising to get this sucker back in service! Many thanks to the NRHS for a $10,000 grant - which will help us rebuild the running gear (and run it on the mainline). Every dollar helps, and we'd love it if you considered giving a $5 to the 5. gofund.me/ddcb26d3
We'll be posting more regular updates about the work as we go along. Our timeline has condensed a bit. We were hoping to put Hammond Lumber 17 back in service, but there are problems with the boiler that are too far gone to fix before her boiler time is up in 2028 (more on that later).
Consequently, we've accelerated our rebuild timeframe for Porter No 5. Our first goal is to raise $60,000 for new tires for the locomotive, in order to advance running gear work, while we continue to plug away on the boiler.
$5 for #5 sounds like a good promotionl campaign slogan!
Wanna donate? ;)
@@mtrainierrail Done!

neat historical pictures! Good luck on the fundraiser!
Cheers to you, Rowdy, for doing the sleuthing work seeing what previous work *could* have effected...
Sealing rivets and welding... you're probably right, what Jack did was *probably* fine, but is it *right*? Is it *correct*? All these questions are different...
But at the end of the day, if it met the standards and passed the expectations of the FRA, eta at that time, then it was right. But no problem with investigating further now to ensure longevity and capture any future potential issues to achieve the future ambitions of the business
I’m so happy to see number five getting the love it deserves after all these years
Me too!
I'm always grateful you guys decided to share this content with us, as a steam fan, as I'm out Rainier fan.
Just ,thank you.
This is amazing. Historical Trains that built America.
Thank you for the update. Great discussion in regards to the boiler repairs. Just the fact that you are investigating to such a degree of detail and looking at best options, shows your heads are in the right space. Where I’m from, we argue more about what colour we are going to paint it on the outside, as opposed to what we need to do to make it safe.
Long journey ahead, I look forward to supporting with small donations when possible
Great to see you back in action. Best of luck with the #5 project.
I think it will happen, it might take a while but she will run again! Looking forward to seeing that happen!
Good Go # 5 Go ! Glad to see you guys working on her. Would love to see her back to her shiny new self. :D
Definitely a good call to get the all the tires replaced at the same time. If 70's rod brasses, springs and knuckle pins have taught us anything, it should be that even wear is ideal. If you're gonna do one side, it's a fairly good idea, cost allowing, to do the other side too.
I think Jack would be VERY proud of you Rowdy. I hope he looking down smileing knowing how your following in his footsteps
That's the biggest Porter loco I've ever seen.
Can't wait for 5 to run again after all these years!
Restoring the current tender sounds like a much better idea than spending even MORE dollars trying to get a "historic" one, especially since the whole restoration wasn't exactly planned. Besides, it looks really cool with the Vandy tender.
Was a pleasure to meet you all. We'll do it again! - Those boys from MT
Good to meet you too! Remember any questions regarding the Willamette feel free to ask!
Worn out locomotives can be restored. Number 20 at the CRRM was also worn out by the Rio Grande Southern very significantly, to the point the frame was bent. With enough money a lot of things can run.
Well to be fair, that was done by strasburg, they can do ANYTHING !
Great video Rowdy. Excellent explanations of the work needed to restore this locomotive. Thanks!!!
The tender is a rarity for retaining the passenger service buffer casting, can't think of another surviving example and reason enough to return it to service, best of luck with #5's restoration.
1472s every 8 years...wow! That would mean there will likely always be a locomotive receiving surgery most times, I imagine.
At last another video on the 5 🚂
also the 5 is also a star in kids videos like awesome trains and I wanna be a engineer
**core childhood memories unlocked** I had that very same thought myself!
The awesome trains steamer as I know it shall live again
it only rains a lot in western washington
Just a idea look into linex truck bed liner for the inside of 5s tender that should prolong it's life
4:24 ah yes the keyboard worriers of FB so much knowledge from people who don’t work on these things daily 😂😂😂.
I'm so happy 5's keeping the Vanderbuilt! (Vanderbilt?) Either way, It looks so pretty with it. Good luck, I'll certainly try and help donate!
We have had a framed picture of the #5 in the shop office for over 20 years.
Any plans for a certain Huberis to show up for a future video limes 😂
He’s already talked about wanting to go up there. Just to busy
He could make a vlog on it. It could also work with when he goes up to seattle to see his family
5 o'clock somewhere
Do you guys allow people to see the 5 in person?
are the trucks on the tender going to be replaced with roller bearing-equipped trucks and is her boiler jacket still going to be painted green?
At 23:36, When/where was this picture taken of the 5 and the SP 4999?
Tacoma, 5 and the 4449 where in route to Wenatchee.
Could we Work with some tourists railways on sharing Costs....
When do ya guys think it will be back in service?
In two years, until the day it steams two years early.
I will donate to this cause, - I promise.
....But you do first have to (please) tell me the song/artist of the opening music (banjo & fiddle). (Thanks in advance for that alone).
Its in the discription!
