Great video!
My pleasure
I give them a good drink early in the morning. I wrap old dish towels (white) around all pots ceramic and plastic that have full sun exposure all day. They stay cool. One of my double benches up against my husband's shop, have firs, spruce, larches, pomegranate, and kurume that get full sun until around 2:00. Pots are also wrapped. We made a frame with 3/4 PVC pipe the whole length. Ran heavy cord across the top and made 40 % shade cloth curtains I can pull across as needed.(like shower curtains ) Pull them back after full sun is off of them. Our large deck is fully covered, faces North. Maples under it in bright shade. All the Satsuki are on benches on the edge of the deck. They get morning sun, then bright shade all day until the sun gets all the way around in the evening, then they 😢get a bit more full sun. So far no scorched leaves even at 108 in SW Oregon. Best of luck to everyone in this weird weather change!!. The dish towels and shade curtains have really worked well. Not very attractive but it works.
Thanks! That’s saying things if you are getting leaf scorch in Oregon.
@@BaikoenBonsai We were 108 last Saturday. Started out in the morning at 64 degrees. As I am grateful for the cooler starts in the mornings the big swings to hot are a pain.
I've been doing cacti lately. I need to get back to bonsai again.
Time to get back into the game/ on the horse. Or wait until after the heat waves!
For me, here in the Phoenix, AZ area, (115+ temps 🥵🥵) it is really tough. I love maples and the way how I keep them here, is using sunblock + Evaporative coolers. It helps a lot. It lowers the temperature 12+ degrees.
I have hard water does that affect the leaves with hard scale on them?
@@BaikoenBonsai The hard water here is 800+ (pretty bad). I have a tankless high flow RO water system connected to 2 tanks, that are connected to a pump which I use to water the tree, and also for the evaps too.
PBE coming up!
Are you going?
@@BaikoenBonsai yup. Already got the pass and lodging booked. I submitted my cascading California, but it didnt get in. It’s an alternate. Oh well.
Very nice garden 🪴❤
Thank you. Still a bit of a mess
I made a trellis with a grape growing over it. Provides shade for trees that can’t handle the heat. Ojai gets 100 often. Olives and Oaks are full sun. Great video. Thank you
Do you trim the grape vine to let light in not during summer?
@@BaikoenBonsai I try. Vines have a mind of their own
Water 3 times a day in some trees, maples get a 30% shade cloth. Awesome update on up coming events, unfortunately it's hard to balance bass fishing and bonsai sometimes.
Well you cannot catch them all!
I only have 15 trees, so I move most of them in my yard to have afternoon shade for these 3 months and for the few larger trees I have that are tied down for wind I use a large thin white nylon pillow case 22 x 60 and cover the tree around noon till 7 pm and this works great at protecting my trees from cali's summer heat.
👍👌
Thank you for watching
Beautiful job filming. 👍🏻
Thank you
So the 1/3d of azaleas that do reflowe in the fall, will not do so in bonsai culture because we prune after flowering. They leave the growth and so the buds that didnt pop in June will pop in august in unpruned bushes .
Thank you for the insight. My azalea bushes have been blooming nonstop since May
Someone buy the man a turn table
Haha you know Lindsay has several turntables I should ask him why he doesn’t use them
Nice I am local to Dallas . Are you visiting any bonsai gardens or collections here? I would like to collaborate if interested 😁
Next time dm or email the next time I’m in the area
👍👌
Thank you for watching
That's a great tree!
Thanks
Love this video! SoCal resident here and I feel very informed 😂 see ya soon!
Have fun!
👍👌
Thank you for watching
Tom, in an earlier video you said that a Chinese Elm won't ramify unless the branches harden. What did you mean by that? Thanks
I wait until they harden off before trimming.
Are some of your trees/pots buried in the ground? Does it help with faster growth?
Not buried but just placed on top of soil line. Gives plants the chance to escape below. For quick growth
Hey Tom- You bet'cha yeah! Love the window into personal collections, local shows, and club activities. My only pick of the almighty nit is: I will welcome the day a wireless mic becomes available for vid production. Appreciate all your efforts in keeping the bonsai blazes burning bright from SoCal and wherever you find yourself drawn to tiny trees! Thanks again!
I have a wireless mic. It’s doesn’t play nice with my other recording equipment. I also want a dual mic upgrade
Well dogGONE it!😐
Great collection. Thank you for all your great videos. Happy 4th. Cheers from Ojai Bonsai
Happy 4th!
Thanks Tom...regular updates would be great..
You got it!
Loved the update. Thank you for the heads up about the meeting. Questions.......how do you control your weeds with straight dirt on the ground? Do you get mud everywhere when you water or does the water stay contained because of the watering system? How come you don't have 8 million spider web's everywhere?
Ahah lots of hand weeding. Pedestals have mulch now.
Thanks for sharing, some refined trees on display for sure ✔️
Thanks for watching!

What are the measurements on the cinderblocks you used here?
Description of the material are in the description of the video themselves. But for easy reference the block is 12”x12”x6”
@@BaikoenBonsai sorry. Thanks
Nice cork tree. I’ll be interested in its future development. For the last few weeks I been cutting back all the branches I can reach. Been doing that for years. Topping the trees is going to be very challenging for me. Too tall and too heavy.
Thank you. So whack away if the top height escapes you. I just checked today and the top already has a new bud in the perfect location
Wow thanks for the info... I really needed that muck recipe for a cement slab
Glad it was helpful!

Bill!
That’s right. The man, the myth, the bonsai legend
How old is the forest?
It was one of my intermediate class project. So approximately 8-10years? It have been repotted two times so far
👌👍
Thank you for watching
Beautiful Cork Bark Elm! I have just gotten one from my property, in the early spring. I have many shoots coming out. This gives me great ideas for mine. Thanks so much. 🫶🤩
Sounds great!, there were several updates. So you can find them on my channel
This video came along just as I was getting really discouraged with the lack of ramification and straight branches on my willow leaf ficus trees. You answered all my questions! Thank you!! Keep the videos coming.
They are pretty easy to ramify once they are healthy
That’s an extremely impressive collection. I hope to have trees like that one day right now I only have a few bonsai.
You can do it!
I follow his RUclips channel. I don't why he stopped doing videos. I live in the Phoenix, AZ area and I managed to have Maples, Larches, Redwoods, White Pines and some other trees that can't handle the strong UV light and heat we have here. It was tough at the beginning until I found the way to deal with the 110+ temperatures in the summer. Thanks for your videos!
I asked the same question. He just had other life goals
I would love to see more, hope his channel returns
He may when he moves
Awesome initial styling
Thank you. Still deciding which front to use
@@BaikoenBonsaiI like the backside as the tree looks much fuller. Once you shape the branches I think it would be an amazing specimen one day 🎉 cheers
Unryu lends itself to bonsai due to its contorted branching and relatively smaller blooms. Most C. japonica have blooms that, in my opinion, are too large and tend to look out of scale. ( As an aside, Nuccio nursery has produced some of the most beautiful camellias ever, including my personal favorite -Nuccio’s Pearl) I think I would prefer a C. sasanqua or even better,C. sinensis for flowers that look more complimentary in a bonsai. C. transnokoensis has almost perfect flowers also, but the branching structure is rather stiff and would require quite a bit of work, whereas ‘Unryu’ naturally looks like much work has already been done. Thanks for this video- it is inspiring me Edit: Tama no Ura is also a great character plant. Again, the flowers are approaching the larger size in my eye, but I would definitely make the exception for that one - stunning. Suffice it to say, any Camellia japonica, or other large leaf/flower species in the ground would be a good candidate for a “bonsai style treatment “ pruning. Generally speaking, their natural form is rather clumsy. I’m looking at a C. chekiangoleosa outside my window right now. Where are my pruners….
Thank you for your insight. Yeah flowers are rather large/showy. Camilla are more of a long term project as they will not bulk or ramify easily. More of a generational tree.
I want to visit this nursery bonsai ❤
His contact is on his RUclips channel
@@BaikoenBonsai thank you very much
What percent shade cloth does he use over his Japanese maples?
I just texted him. He said 70% and it was commercial available at Lowe
good to see mel still getting after it, enjoyed his vids
Same here. Kinda nice seeing some RUclipsr still doing their thing.
