In this episode in our series of bonsai techniques we will be covering the basics winter maintenance of Japanese maples with trimming down to basic branch structure. The main purpose of structural trimming is to open up the density branch structure while remaining the taper and balance of the tree without it having similar size branches throughout the tree. This technique is used to help advanced trees or trees in the refinement stage. This type of technique should not be utilized on weak, young or trees your are growing out as it will stop the growth on those branches.
