    I need to start using sacrifice branches. I'm always afraid of not doing it properly. Choosing the wrong branches or the wrong placements. You helped me understand it a bit better! Thank you yet again for the great information!

      Go for it! In the end, worst that can happen is that you thicken parts that you did not want to thicken and need to rethink your design. Just take a younger less valuable plant and have a try!

    I absolutely love the idea of airlayering the sacrificial branch. 😍 Also never thought about letting braches grow at the underside of the branches to thicken them. Thanks Jelle for sharing. 👍 Have a great day 🙋‍♀️ Cheers, Martina

    Jelle, you do know that propagating new plants by air layer "just because" it is there, is a diagnosable illness? Well, it should be, anyway! I am a chronic sufferer, and that is yet another way that new plants appear in the garden. "Honey, that isn't new, it is part of that one over there." I feel so guilty when I prune a tree but don't take a cutting, or put on an air layer!

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  Год назад +1

      The main problem is, there is no known treatment, except complete cold turkey: Remove ALL access to layerable material.

    • @rebeccahunter725
      @rebeccahunter725 Год назад

      @@GrowingBonsai Sadly, that is true. To the detriment to the tree - thus the "get around" is made clear!! Keep growing, I support you! 😜

    Stopped the video at 54 secs to try to answer the question before enjoying the video.
    Thicken branches and trunk, gain vigor, make some propagation, make a graft.
    That's 5 but that's all I could really think of.

    Aesthetically viewed such branches are not so beautiful.. I'd be very curious of your thoughts about wiring such branches to give them some curves

  • @matshagstrom9839
    @matshagstrom9839 Год назад

    You could also argue that a sacrifice branch will sacrifice vigor in the main tree. The tallest branch will produce auxin decreasing the growth in the rest of the tree. I’ve seen this quite a few times. Like you I almost always air layer or take sacrifice branches off as cuttings often putting early bends in sacrifice branches. What is not talked about as much is the potential benefits of letting suckers grow grow on bonsai trees.

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  Год назад

      Yes, a tall sacrifice keeps growth in the rest down. But overall, the plant gain strength, and when you remove the sacrificy, I find the tree is overall stronger. I personally do not allow suckers to grow, as they create lots of lower trunk scars.
