My channel is mainly devoted to instrument-related projects. To date, I've featured many guitar and bass setups, builds, and repair projects. I've performed some amplifier restoration and repair work as well. I occasionally do reviews, and I love digging into the history of specific instruments and gear. I dabble in woodworking, refinishing, finish repairs, fretwork, wiring, and more... but I'm not a luthier, I'm a hobbyist, and my advice is worth just about what you pay for it. :)

Hi can you please tell me the height of kinman HMV as no one can at the moment ??? Thanks colin
BA lookin' Strat. Lucky person who wins that.
Yep, almost done!
I'm using this guitar as a template for my 2008 Squire Bullet and its black. rock on everyone.
Thanks, hope it turns out great!
@@hacksguitarhobby just watching you work on the guitar has got me motivated to upgrade my guitar. I've picked up a musiclily MX211OHD Tremelo 36mm block and a set of Wilkinson vintage alnico 5 pickups new pots and switch and D'addario 9 to 42. i think it is going to be a very nice guitar. just watching you work on guitars has given me the confidence i needed. thank you.
Great work!
Thanks!
Nice work this is shaping up nicely!
Thanks!
Looking forward to seeing which red knob Fender it is and what you’ll be doing with it. I recently acquired a red knob Stage 185 and replaced the two input jacks on it. It’s a solid sounding amp.
I picked it up, it’s the “Evil” Twin. :)
I have the 2007 Squier, VM Tele, made in India. Duncan designed pups, Indian Red Cedar body. Other than being very heavy, I think it's a very good, very playable guitar.
It is slightly heavy I suppose, but definitely solid.
Can't wait for the giveaway details, this is shaping up to be very cool looking Strat
Thanks, coming fairly soon! Should be finished with the guitar this week.
Looking good 👍
Thanks 👍
I started using the Music city nut slot gauge from Joe glaser. It’s very simple but cool. You put the plastic slot in the nut, then you run it across the frets. It has little grooves in it at 0.000 0.003 0.005 and 0.008 and you basically just keep filing until it’s either just below or just above whichever one you want. It allows me to get super low how I like it but with no buzzing. I especially love the fact that you can do it without the strings on like you were talking about in the video
Nice, looks like a good tool and not overly expensive.
@@hacksguitarhobby yeah it works great. Takes the guesswork out of it. If it clicks, it’s higher than the number, and once it doesn’t, you just move down to the next number (until you’re at your ideal spot). Simple and cheap. My favorite stuff lol
All the music nomad stuff is amazing!
I have liked everything I have tried so far.
@@hacksguitarhobby yeah they just came out with a cool spot level tool which I haven’t check how much it is, but definitely way cheaper than stewmacs fret kisser
Oh man, that Strat looks just this one that my friend had that I always envied. Can’t wait to hear what the giveaway criteria will be 🤞🤞🤞
It’ll be easy. I just need to test a selection tool and will announce the details.
@@hacksguitarhobby sweet!!!
I have a question, i can use the truss rod nut fender for a squier?! Or are diferents?!
No, they are very different.
@@hacksguitarhobby thnks
I put an alnico v loaded pickguard I put together in mine and a set of locking tuners. Those improvements made it a really nice guitar.
I imagine it would. Great upgrade platform.
Thanks for this (esp about the pickguard screws), I have 6 of the Mini Strats with various mods (from pickups & pots to locking tuners), a Mikro, a Mitchell w/p-90s, an Epiphone LP power player, Taylor Baby and always on the lookout for more. A medical condition messed up my hands & I had to switch to lower string tension/smaller scale. I do use 9s (Super Slinky) because using heavier strings defeats the purpose of the switch, I just have to spend a lot of time with the setup & play with a very light touch (I don't really have a choice with the last part). Thanks for the breakdown, I learned things.
I used to use lighter strings on short scales. As long as the neck has enough relief, the other setup issues can be overcome. Thank for watching!
I have a red one
Nice! Thanks for watching.
@@hacksguitarhobby it was my first guitar I played it live once but after that the low e string started going out of tune

Yes, keeps me busy!
Save that card space.
It's at a premium, for sure. ZV-E10 eats it quickly.
@@hacksguitarhobby , love it! You always make me laugh.
😮someone wants to sell me one for 200. I absolutely love mine. I keep adding to it. So cool to me. I stopped wanting a Fender
$200 is a little rich. I'm buying as many as I can get my hands on for around $100, though.
@@hacksguitarhobby, yeah, it is. Don't think I'm gonna bite. Got 6 guitar's now. Had 16... space is my issue. Got my vintage guitar, my SE, my 2000 epiphone pre special with offset dovetail, 86 Squier bullet one contemporary stratocaster/ Telecaster, my Squier standard stratocaster wirh a fender stratocaster body and guts, and my RG ibanez rgt47dx neck through. Project and ok looking to get a neck for the Fender to bring it back to the 2018 50s soft v stratocaster. That's definitely enough. Just need a acoustic and I'm done. Oh and my starcaster with a flame maple neck and a rosewood fretboard. 😆 🤣
Thanks great vid new sub !!!
Thanks for the sub!
That's going to be a sweet looking Strat.
That’s the plan!
Great looking guitar! Good luck to everyone who enters
Definitely. I am drafting the rules and getting everything prepared. Should kick off in about 2-3 weeks.
Hotod strat , love it 👍 ❤
Thank you!
i have a 2008 bullet learning heaps from you .
Glad to help!
@@hacksguitarhobby hi i have bought some V5 pickups and 250k pots but i don't know what volume and tone capacitors to get would you have any suggestions.
You don’t need a cap for volume unless you want a treble bleed circuit. I have a video on that but would suggest skipping it until you get a little more practice wiring. For tone on single coil guitars with 250k pots, use a .047 uF cap, which is the standard value, and typically you only need one cap shared by both tone pots. You can play around with other values later when you get more experience. Might want to try .033, .022, or even .010 uF if the .047 doesn’t suit you, but it suits 90+ percent of Strat players.
@@hacksguitarhobby I'll try the .047 uf this is all new to me and i appreciate your help thank you.
That's gonna be a nice guitar for someone. I really like the blacked out look with that pickguard. Nice choice.
Thanks, I hope someone loves it!
Nice video. I have a question though. Why is the middle pickup reversed magnetic polarity?
For noise cancellation, when used with one of the pickups next to it.
I knew that, I was just checking to see if you knew that... just kidding...! My parents made me this way... just kidding...! Thank you for the great vid and I will check out your other vids...!
I recently bought my second Epiphone S-310 with a batwing headstock painted in matching black. Previous owner swapped out the electronics with a bridge position P-90 (really hot), volume, no tone, and floating tremolo So very simple and sustains all day long. I love it. So fun to play. My other has has the explorer headstock with the original HSS setup and a Floyd Rose tremolo and a nut lock. It’s fun too but I hate the Floyd Rose. Wish I could remove and replace it. Between the two of them I have $180 invested. Cant complain!
I’ve been interested in trying one of these to tame a Floyd… might help amzn.to/4cS2NEV
Eu tenho uma guitarrra dessas, Brasil, Rio Grande do Sul, cidade, Santa Cruz do Sul.
Nice!
The neck and head stock look like they have a slight darkness/ stain vs a pale white, is that just lack of lighting?
They actually are a bit darker than most Squiers I see. Not to the point of being roasted, but to the point that I did check the specs to make sure it was maple!
Fender Mexico always sounds like Fender Mexico - I Love it. Nice work man. This pushes the value of this nice bedroom amp up widely.
Thanks a lot!
Great video!! I need to replace the input jack on my 25R.
Go for it!
I was planning on buying this used amp. I will clean this like you did and hopefully it works great. Thank you for the video. Btw I’m just moving from acoustic to electric and this is my first amp, from the mini donner amp which is really a joke 😅
It’s a great amp. Hope it works out!
I wasn’t crazy about the matte, I was actually going to just review this and sell it but I kinda dug it. Keeping mine
Yeah I think matte is nicer on some colors than others. I admit it’s odd on a burst, but I still like it.
@@hacksguitarhobby I had red and and black already, so maybe if I polish the crap out of it I can get it glossy😎
Usually that works. Try it under the pickguard first!
@@hacksguitarhobby good thing is if anything happens it was only $119🤣
The recent Affinity series use 1.650 (42mm) nuts as well. It was a great starter guitar for my daughter a few years back. Cool to see this series use that as well. Nice work on the video, thanks!
I thought I had heard about that change but wasn’t sure. Thanks for the info!

Maybe you mean height? Not sure what you’re after.
Make a nice HSS modder with the nice cutouts. Like that Matt finish as well. Gonna make a nice project 🙂 👍
May try an experiment first, but we will see!
That would be cool with a pair of Soapbar P90’s or a P90 in the neck with a humbucker in the bridge. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it if you decide to mod it!
I’ve thought about P90s in a Strat for a while. We will see!

I see what you did there :)
Great video and a big help! Just a heads up for anyone making this, when measuring 3/8” back from the edge of the clip before applying tape, keep in mind the thickness of the washer you used. Mine were a bit thinner than the ones used in the video and had to adjust my tape slightly.
Sure! The tape starts 3/8" back from the face of the washer that touches/compresses the clip. So, yes, the washer thickness is part of that 3/8".
@@hacksguitarhobbyoh ya good point haha. I may have just messed mine up. My clip ended up being a little too deep. I have to make some adjustments!
Knock it back into the body, then bend it back into shape once it’s out. Turn it 90 degrees in the hole when you reinstall it to get into fresh wood.
These are the Dan smith era guitar.
Dan Smith was at Fender then, but typically the Dan Smith designation stops at the ‘82.
Your video here in Brazil is very good. There aren't many Reviews about this hss series fender player, I bought one for myself this week and I'm really enjoying it, I'm going to upgrade it like changing the
Change the. Nut install graptech and string will know graptech too and put gotoh springs and install a bleed treblee and Orange drop 47 capacitor on the potentiometer
Cool, thanks!
Go check out my short short. I really think they're underrated. AXL made these. They have veneers too! Once upgraded, it's not average, it's above average. Slab fretboard too! If you researched what Fenders had these specs, you'd see they're 💎 diamonds!
I’ll check it out. You’ll be interested in my upcoming giveaway guitar. Also, I recently learned these have serials that start with 00, but they weren’t made in 2000. The sticker serials read as three digit years, so 002 is 2002, 007 is 2007, etc. Having seen a few dozen of these now, I can also say with confidence that they are nearly identical to most Starcasters except for the headstock shape.
@@hacksguitarhobby love giveaways! Yeah, I had a stratocaster that had a sticker number on it. Pre afinity is pretty neat too. Some had 22 frets. Like my standard strat.
Love how it turned out! A video showing how you installed the cap would have been awesome, because it's a very cool touch
I can do that on a future video. Essentially you just measure the height of the cap, drill to that depth with a 30 mm Forstner bit in a drill press with a depth stop, score up the bottom of the hole with a chisel, remove the liner from the cap and scratch up the inside, then fill the cap with hot glue to the surface, press the cap in the hole, and Bob’s your uncle. I had one pop out, which is why I started scratching things up before gluing now. I also recommend holding the cap with a canning magnet due to the heat from the hot glue, and guide it into the neck without turning the cap over, spilling the glue… but once installed, flip everything over to dry/cool so that the glue makes good contact with the wood. I may also try epoxy next time for a more definite bond, but I like the fact that I could heat and remove this if needed.
Noob question but for your cap discharge tool/wire with the resistors soldered to it, what value resistors are you using? Also, I notice in a lot of videos, guys are using the old boxy wirewound type of resistors, but it looks like you’re using the metal film resistors? Can’t really tell under the heat shrink. Does it matter what type or material resistor you’re using? Thanks in adcance
It’s been many years since I made it, so I don’t 100% remember the resistance values, but I’m pretty sure they are 10K each for a total of 20K. They are definitely 5W metal oxide. Wire wound might be simpler to find in high watt values. I used two only because I didn’t have higher resistance value resistors on hand.
@@hacksguitarhobby Awesome, thank you so much for your reply!
is this alder ?
Difficult to say for sure. General consensus is that they are Agathis or Basswood.
With single coils, no matter how well shielded, you'll still have some hum, esp. when overdriven. Very nice job, BTW.
Thanks! It's not much hum, just a bit.
Can I suggest setting up a Shure SM57 to your amp? As you have it, you can't really hear much tonal difference. The SM57 is such a classic used on a lot of classic records that most players will really understand what you have going. It's a reference tone, in a way. There are many relatively inexpensive I/O devices and freeware that will allow you to record the tones you hear in your shop. Your videos have nice voiceover levels. This will help demonstrate the actual guitar sounds better.
Yes, I do need to do something for sure. Appreciate the suggestion.
Top notch stuff. You are helping me spruce up a Mesa LSC through time and space so thank you! Subbed
Welcome aboard!
Good looking guitar. Sounds good too.
