I've finally got a Fender USA bass on the bench, and I've finally got a paying customer! This baby will get the works - a full string change, cleaning, and setup. Once again, I'll set up the bass according to Fender's Knowledgebase, support.fender.com/en-us/knowledgebase/article/KA-01903. This time we won't go point by point, but you can look at my earlier video for that.

    I thought this video was really well done and I learned a lot - thank you! I'm having some problems setting up my Fender Jazz Deluxe Series 5-string, though. I just replaced the Fender neck with a Warmoth neck, and the neck is really straight - just the tiniest concave bow. The action, however, is really high (low B string is 8/64" from the 12th fret and G string is 6/64"). The problem is the bridge saddles on both the low B & G strings are completely bottomed out (i.e., they can't get any lower). The natural arch the strings are supposed to follow (with the A string being highest and the low B & G strings lowest) isn't at all evident. The saddles on the middle strings aren't completely bottomed out, but they're close, and much lower appearing (probably due to the diameter of the string) than the outside strings. My other issue is I can't find factory specs for action or pickup height for a 5-string, which I imagine isn't identical to a 4-string. Any suggestions you (or anyone) can offer are greatly appreciated!

    • @hacksguitarhobby
      @hacksguitarhobby День назад

      If you run out of saddle adjustment (can't go any lower) you need a shim in the neck pocket to tilt the neck backward (thickest part of the shim at the end of the neck, toward the bridge). The shims with predrilled holes will typically not have the correct tilt direction or shape, but these blanks should work amzn.to/3PZJzDm and you can trim them to shape with scissors. As far as pickup height, you can just use some generic spec like 6/64" and adjust from there by ear for tone/volume.

      @@hacksguitarhobby - Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I'm new to all of this and I didn't know anything about shims, but it makes sense that this would be the solution. And I appreciate the suggestion regarding pickup height. Great advice! You have a new subscriber!

      @@hacksguitarhobby Turns out I had just soldered to the wrong parts of the jack. Everything should be correct now but still no sound. I did turn it on when it was wiring improperly so perhaps I broke a part of the amp which isn’t a biggie. The amp was just sitting around collecting dust anyways. Although, I am using a thicker wire gauge from the speaker to the jack than the amp to the jack. Could that possibly be my issue or should I just call my loses?

It doesn't have the string holes in the body, but does have the same adjustment bridge pieces. Each time I restring it is a battle to find the right playability and tone. Definitely have some loose contacts I am going to have to deal with at some point, too. As always, great information! Thanks.

    Great video. The cup jack is hands down the dumbest thing I've ever encountered in guitar building though. In all fairness it's like the first ever input jack for an electric guitar right? and I don't mean dumb like stupid, but dumb like over engineering and convoluting the crap out of a solution to an otherwise simple problem.

    @LazarusSchell 10 дней назад

    The Body Is CHAMBERED Mahogany. Their are 5 Routed out Chambers in the Body making it really light weight, and able to resonate well. You shouldn't treat it like a Solid Body Guitar at all. Almost sounds and feels like a hollow body a bit.

  • @MichaelVeroukis
    @MichaelVeroukis 11 дней назад

    Thanks for this video. I have this exact guitar, same color even. Mine is in better shape, but I had to replace the bridge block as the original disintegrated and I could no longer screw in the tremolo bar. The bridge block I had to use was the one with 56.5mm string spacing, which is different from newer MiM Fenders/Squires. I ended up using a brass block made by Musiclily. According to their product description, the block I used fits the USA/Mexico Fender vintage Strat style guitars and Korean Squier Standard (1st Series) S or E prefix '87-'92 guitar with 2-7/32" (56.5mm) string spacing and thick body. My Squire Bullet's serial number starts with an E, followed by a 7 so I'm pretty confident it was made in Korea in 1987. The brass block really made a sonic difference too, I highly recommend the upgrade. I was nervous removing the two bridge screws as tightening those correctly looks like a bit of an art form, so instead I just loosened the saddles enough so I could squeeze a Philips screwed driver in between and loosen the bridge block bolts. That worked out nicely. Only real issue I have with the guitar is that the neck doesn't sit straight and the low-E string is too close to the edge. I've tried some shims to correct this but so far have had only mild success. I'll give it another shot next time I change my strings. Also, wondering if upgrading any of the electronics is worth while on this guitar. I actually love the look of this guitar, the pick guards on normal Strat guitars is something I absolutely hate. This guitar has a much cleaner and perhaps more modern look, I really love the look of it and I'd love to upgrade it. I'm just not particularly knowledgeable about where to even begin with this.

    • @hacksguitarhobby
      @hacksguitarhobby 10 дней назад

      Thanks, good info here. Upgrading electronics is mainly only necessary if the old ones are malfunctioning, noisy, or you don’t like the feel. Otherwise there is little reason, unless you are asking about pickups. Pickup changes can affect sound greatly, and many people upgrade the other electronic components while they are doing that. Your neck issue likely won’t be resolved with shims. You need to loosen the neck screws (not remove), pull the neck sideways toward the high E, and tighten the neck screws again. If you can’t resolve it that way, a narrower bridge might be the next easiest thing if you aren’t comfortable adjusting (sanding) the neck or neck pocket to gain a bit more space for adjustment. Maybe I’ll do a video on that process, we’ll see.

    My first electric was exactly that model. I still have it, but never play it. One bend and it's out of tune. Action is the highest I've ever seen on any guitar. It must've come with super light strings from the factory, because I remember trying to switch to regular strings (almost 30 years ago), but they would pull so hard on the bridge that it was nowhere near parallel with the body of the guitar. I really like the looks of the guitar and the neck feels ok, but I just hate playing it because of the high action. I don't know. Feels like a pretty hopeless case (or maybe I just lack all the required skills and knowledge) ... ?

    I have one of these. If I remember correctly, mine is from 1986 (I had researched the serial number). Something isn't right on the one in this video. That neck radius is supposed to be 12 inches. The catalogue said 12 and that's what mine has. Also, inspect the body by the tremolo post on the treble side. Mine cracked and the post shifted towards the neck. I'm not sure if it was a defect in the wood, the design or if it got struck at some point. Looking at pictures of the Fender version compared to my Squier, it appears that the wood was thinner between the post and the pickup on the Squier. Of course, without having one of each in front of me, I couldn't take any measurements.

    • @hacksguitarhobby
      @hacksguitarhobby 16 дней назад

      I read that recently as well. I’ll have to check it again. I do wonder if this one is a late ‘87 or if it could be a neck that was also used on the vintage trem model. I’ll have to measure that version (the black one) that I have as well. My Fender with the 12” radius had the truss rod adjuster at the headstock, and these Squiers are both at the neck heel.

    MIJ Strat was my very first electric guitar, it was a hand me down from my cousin. I handed it down to my younger brother and never saw it again. It was an awesome guitar in general, not just for a beginner.

      I agree, they were the Standards of their day, and they were built with high expectations from Fender.

    I had a Japanese Squier from that era, but with standard trem. It was a really good guitar. Sadly, I lost it in a house fire.

      Very sad indeed. I really love my blue Strat... awesome instrument. This one is a close second along with my black model with the standard trem.

    I have the shaped flight case generation 3 and I was wondering how much you think it might be worth if it's worth anything

    • @hacksguitarhobby
      @hacksguitarhobby 18 дней назад

      Lately I've seen a lot of the shaped ones advertised for $150 or so. I'm not sure if they are bringing that, but I think it sounds reasonable depending on condition. They key is finding someone who is trying to match the era of their guitar with a case in great condition, and then you can get the premium price.

    I got this model a few weeks back on eBay, from Donner. Including shipping it was 95 bucks and a no brainier for me. It was absolutely playable out of the box but does desperately need upgraded...as in working tuners. After watching you video I feel this is a great guitar to customize and I'm all about it.

    Wait a minute! I *think* these could be a variation of the same unknown pickups (or brand at least) used in the Trump guitar.

      I’ll have to check that out. I’m familiar with the old Trump acoustics from decades ago, but nothing recent.

    Helpful video with good info. I would suggest showing close-ups more, especially in the first half whem you had the guitar on the table (neck on). You talked about the scarf joint and tuners but I really wanted to see what you were talking about. Good stuff! I'll watch more!

    I bought sn '04 hardtail Squier Strat at the pawn shop for $80, it had a broken cast saddle so I got a machined brass saddle kit from Musiclily. Awesome guitar now, with a cleanup and setup it looks and plays better than new. Made by Samick. I do not miss having a trem. Mine also weighs about 6.5lbs and feels like nothing on your shoulder. Killer paint job too, Samick is very good at their finishes. So is this a 'real' Strat? It is to me.

      @hacksguitarhobby 23 дня назад

      I’m a fan of hardtails also.

      @markpell8979 23 дня назад

      @hacksguitarhobby Don't see 'em very often. It is sure different from a trem Strat or Tele. Mine has the 'plywood' body too. I'm a woodworker, there's nothing wrong with that necessarily. It conserves hardwood and it can be more stable. And you can put whatever veneers you want on the outsides, finish it however. They should've called it a 'structural laminate.' But 'plywood' bodies is the only thing most people knock about these Squier Strats by Samick. Doesn't bother me and you'd never know it's laminated without looking inside. Meanwhile Danelectros are made of laminated masonite with plastic countertop edging and everyone thanks that's cool. Which actually it is.

      @hacksguitarhobby 23 дня назад

      In Squiers, normally the Bullet line is where you see the hardtails. Plywood is fine in many cases, but some varieties are quite heavy. Squier combats that by reducing thickness.

    • @markpell8979
      @markpell8979 23 дня назад

      @hacksguitarhobby Yes, it is thinner.
