    This is a silly question but do you have roads in and out or a boat? How do you get supplies? What would you do in case of am emergency and are family or friends allowed to visit?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper День назад

      There are a few other videos on my channel that do go deeper into some of these questions. You can see Boat Bluff Lighthouse on google maps and see where it is located. There are no roads and a boat is not provided to you so not all lightkeepers are mobile in this way. Supplies are delivered once a month by helicopter and if there is an emergency, we have to call for a helicopter to come and assist. Family can come and visit but it is a really big ordeal and most people aren't too interested in doing what it takes to actually get out here. Several plane rides, hotel stays and a lot of different expenses to just get out this way.

    Hey Spence. Do you ever see the blue and white Alaska ferries pass through? I think that is the route they use? What are some of the coolest ships you've seen?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper День назад

      Yes the Alaska ferry does go by regular, this is their standard route, and the BC ferries. In the summer the BC ferry goes by so close that you can actually see facial expressions of people on deck from my living room window. There is a lot of traffic that goes by and some pretty interesting stuff for sure. When I see real interesting things I will usually post it on my instagram or my Facebook. There have been full container ships, oil tankers, huge cruise ships and more that have gone by, the bigger, the more impressive it feels having them go by.

      We are supposed to have the extra rooms for people when they are on site or for others when we are off site. Some stations will have a third house, called a crew house for people to stay in when work is being done on site but since Boat Bluff is so small, there is no third house so if we have people on site for days, then they need to stay with us in our houses. It is like having guests who are complete strangers living with you. haha. That does not happen very often tho. Nice to have a guest room just in case tho.

      Here in BC, having these locations in such remote areas is useful for the coast guard and for other agencies in case of an emergency. Also all the sites are heritage sites so they require proper and regular maintence for upkeep. I don't see the job going away any time soon.

I noted that you said you only had a single bed. There is plenty of room for all the lighthouse keepers in your house the other house would not seem to be needed. Let's just say, lighthouse life is not for everyone and leave it there. lol. The houses were all originally constructed with families in mind as that was the culture back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. All the stations have homes big enough for families but not many stations even have couples on them. Mostly single people.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 17 дней назад

      Is there something that is apparently wrong with the house? I seriously doubt there will be much investment in the house or other buildings, unless they are structurally worthy of being condemned. It's extremely expensive to get stuff shipped up to that remote location, and then it's a challenge to manipulate it between ship and shore. They appear in fine shape to my eye, based on what the video footage reveals, at least. Going forward, for new installations, using sea cans isn't a bad idea. Makes the whole shipping part of it a lot easier, just ship the whole package in itself, empty out and set-up at destination.

    • @waynecmontgomery
      @waynecmontgomery 17 дней назад

      @@stanpatterson5033 The structure looks a tad bit weathered but I can actually see your point. You can also convert shipping containers directly into housing using modular construction 🏗️ materials and methods.

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper 17 дней назад

      Boat Bluff is actually in really good shape compared to some other sites. We don't get a lot of bad weather for the most part and structures are really quite sound. The houses do get new paint every few years and the vinyl siding is not that old either. They would upgrade the house long before tearing it down, that is for certain. There are tons of logistics involved when it comes to supplies and what to do with them. Here there really is not a lot of aditional space other than the boat deck. You can't put stuff on the helipad and there is little to no viable lawn that can be used. Also the boat deck is 6 to 7 meters from the water so getting things from the water to the deck can be a challenge as well, especially since the derrick can only move 1000 lbs at a time. Things can be slinged to the station using a helicopter if needed but all of these are really really costly to do and so budget is always a question as well. There won't be any huge construction at Boat Bluff for many many years and the last one was 20 years ago I believe when they put in a new helipad and did all the wooden decks around the houses and the stairway. The solar panels was a big job about 7 years ago but most of the materials for that was not too much to have around.
