Congratulations Spencer, good luck with your new position. I live in central Indiana. But my daughter lives in Anchorage. We went down to Wrangell and Petersburg last year. Definitely loved the scenery. Looking forward to upcoming videos....

Good Morning from Ohio. Found your channel by accident and really enjoy it. I have always loved lighthouses. All the ones I have been to or in are on the East coast. A couple of my favorites is Split Rock Lighthouse in Minnesota and Machias Seal Island Lighthouse on the east coast. Benn to Machias Seal Island about 3 times. 2 with birding groups and once on our own for biring. Love the behind the scenes look at Lighthouse keeping. Keep up the good work, its all interesting to me. Thanks for the videos!

Visiting Lighthouses is always a great experience, even for those who are not fully enamored with them. I have always liked lighthouses but it wasn't until I was working in one where I was able to really fully appreciate what is involved.
Congrats for your subscribers! I subscribed to your channel today, I didn't know how fascinating lighthouses can be, thanks for teaching us about them and for doing it with such a good energy. I wanted to know how you became a light keeper, I would love a video about it.

I do have plans for a few "how to become a lighthouse keeper" videos but I am still gathering some info and writing some thoughts down. I will go a little more into detail about it for certain. I do get asked a lot about it and there are some specifics that are needed before even considering applying.

Thank you so much! I am thinking maybe 1000 by the end of the month! ha, well that might be ambitious. Still, I am still a little in shock at how fast growth has been the last month. More than 400 subscribers in the last 28 days. More than my first 7 months of doing videos put together!

Yup, your trickle is flooding now! I don’t think it’s overly ambitious to reach 1,000 subs by the end of the month. You’ve just gained over 250 subs in the last week.
You provide really unique content.
I could be wrong, but I don’t see other lightkeepers doing regular videos; especially the ins and outs of the station and position.

Glad to be of assistance. There are still a lot of navigation questions I have as the aids to navigation is a huge area of learning. There are so many different lights and what they all mean is quite fascinating.

I haven't found any downsides yet! hahaha. Other than not having my wife with me. I think that is a personal thing tho, I like to be isolated and alone so I have no problems with that but I can see it being a little difficult for some.

Great achievement, both the milestone and the job! Congratulations! It'd be cool to see some (radio) conversations with other keepers, see what they think of the job and how they manage the challenges.
I have discussed with others about being on camera or doing interviews or something and most everyone gives me a polite decline. I guess not everyone wants to be in the public eye.
Congrats! It would be cool to see a video detailing a bit more about the shipping and other boats that come through the channel. Keep up the great work!
There is a ferry that comes through twice a week that is impressive to see. Tugs also go by pretty frequent with large barges of cargo and stuff. Many many many different fishing boats go by pretty frequently. I have been putting together footage but not sure how to put it together in a good video.

Perks are dependent on individuals of course but for me perks are, a house to live in with no rent, no water and no electric bills. No neighbors, other than your co-worker. No frivolous spending, unless you are animal with Amazon.
Pay depends on what station you are on as there is different pay rates for the level of isolation. Starting pay is around the $35k a year and I think you top out around $65k but I am not certain on that. Starting pay is right around minimum wage so it is not a high paying job by any means. I believe this balances out with the aforementioned, lack of need to pay for rent.
For internet, I set my phone on hot spot and then connect my computer to the phone. I have a very faint signal for cellular so that is about the extent of it currently. Looking into getting Satellite but it is an expensive set up.
Growing food has a cost over convenience factor it to. Buying fruit and veg from the supermarket is pretty easy and does not really cost that much but gardening is something I am not so good at and the effort involved is quite high. That does not mean I won't try but I don't think it will ever be something that I depend on for sustenance.
There is a certain level of upgrade you can do to the houses to make them more personal but you can't do things like knock down walls or add windows or full on rennos. Painting, maybe floors, if you get approval, integrated wall shelving, stuff like that is usually not an issue but it is good to get approval first before you go ahead. I don't own the building, so you would still consider it like a rental and you would treat it as such. You wouldn't knock down walls in a rental.
For the island I can go as far as I want provided I am back in time for the next days weather. Problem is, the island is not very traversable. Shorelines are not good for walking and the forest is dense and difficult to navigate with the land having a lot of steep uphill and down hill to it. There is a peak on the island just over 2500 feet that I suppose you could try and climb but it is quite steep.

You asked and here is my suggestion; I'd like to see some hiking and sightseeing videos! keep up the good work! Greetings from Istanbul! You can even set up the camera and just record the sea or the forest for 2+ hours. Some people like to play a video in the background while they study or doing the chores. It's like a meditation and those kind of videos are watched millions of times in a day. I think you can find a nice spot, get the camera rolling and then upload the whole thing here! They would be like "2 hours of calm sea" or "1 hour of forest sight"! People living in the cities crave for nature and sometimes the closest we can get to the nature (unfortunately) is by videos. Take care of yourself!
I love the idea of a 2 hour long shore video but I can't even imagine how much bandwidth it would take up trying to upload it! haha. I am still super limited on how much data I use but it is a really great suggestion.
I will do what I can to get out and film some of the forest on my next excursion.

Hi Spence, do you have a little garden to grow fresh veg there? Have you been on any hikes since getting your new boots?
There is a very overgrown garden here and now that I know I am going to be here for a while, I will consider doing something with it. There are many plants and trees that need some trimming like rose bushes and vines that are a little out of control but only because the house has had rotating staff for so long.
I did go out for a bit once but it has been wet and raining for a few weeks now. I do want to get out again and do some real exploring.
Congrats on 700 subs!!! Do you have a drone that you can fly around the station and out on the open seas? Can you show us your AIS set up at the lighthouse?
I have a small drone that I have use for some of my videos, you can see some footage here: ruclips.net/video/eebvNiq986U/видео.html. It won't go too far tho and I have not even been able to get to the other side of the channel here.
As for AIS, we don't actually have one at the station. Prince Rupert base has their AIS set up there with satellite tracking and they use a special traffic channel to communicate with passing ships. We occasionally use AIS on our phones to find out how far or close CCG ships are when they are coming to the station for deliveries and things.

The Principal at Entrance had a large bookshelf full of miniature Lighthouses, including ones that light up so they are out there. There is even one out on the lawn here that is a little worse for wear but is pretty cool sitting there.
@@BCLighthouseKeeper heard some are available with solar charging revolving type.. Are you saying about fully functional light houses..if possible make a video of them.. So we can have an idea

Sarah Island is actually quite big and there is no way I would be able to walk it in just half a day, which is the time I would have between my last weather and my first weather the day following. I do want to get some video soon of some of the terrain around the station. Working on that.

well, when I filmed and uploaded, there was a little time that passed but it is still going up pretty quick. The time of my writing this, I am 20 away from 800! Scary how RUclips works sometimes.
