    This has to be the best job in the world. I want a job where I don't have to deal with people.

    The hike alone from the tank to the heater is enough to keep you warm! It's great to see that you have two helpers.

    Hey Spence, Great video !!! Would it not be cheaper to use offshore Windmills or battery storage power? And your records should be digital.

      Lightstations are working through a transition to wind and other forms of renewable power. There is a lot of coordination that needs to be done as well as the expenses involved. With about 50 lightstations on both the east and west coast, it is a really big endeavour.
      Also it was just last year that our site got actual internet and there are still several stations that don't have access to internet or cellular and so the move to digital documents has not been put into effect yet. There is going to be a transition but stations need stable and reliable connectivity for it to happen. Since documents need to be relayed to the main base monthly, paper documents are still the only way to ensure this happens regularly.

    Should have done this when it was snowing and icy, it would add to the drama, slipping and sliding around.😀BTW how long is that hose?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh man that would have been exciting! haha. I don't know the exact lengh of the hose but it is long enough to get to the top of the stairs. That is close to 70 steps if you want to measure how tall and far that would be.

    Nice Video! Completely unrelated but was thinking of applying for a position, saw the hours/seven days a week thing, and the pay, but how much vacation time do you generally get a year? Great channel, very informative!

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  5 месяцев назад +1

      You get a standard 2 weeks plus all your holidays like thanksgiving and christmas but all the holidays are banked as extra days for your vacation as you are actually working the actual holiday. Like any job, the longer you are at the job, the longer the vacation time you get. Usually it all works out to be about 6 to 8 weeks you can leave a year.

    So interesting how this happens at Boat Bluff. How far does that hose have to go? Is that the furthest house?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, the PK house is the furthest that the hose has to go. The problem here is that neither of the house tanks are accessable by a tractor so this is the only way of refuling. The steep grade of the bluff makes certain tasks a little more diffuclt.

    Nice! I'm at Race Rocks and have a very similar large tank, day tank and old generator, all disabled and left in place. I move diesel around by hand and heat the house with salvaged firewood from the water. Great Video!

      Does the salvaged firewood from the water cause your wood stove or chimney to rust out?

    • @jeffjohnsisland5551
      @jeffjohnsisland5551 23 дня назад

      Also, are you a lighthouse keeper or do you own the land? Is the lighthouse still lighting.

    • @bcphotographer
      @bcphotographer 22 дня назад +1

      @@jeffjohnsisland5551 the chimney soots up a bit faster, but I keep it clean ..... the lighthouse is on a small rock, but also an ecological reserve and a parks canada heritage site .... technically, the lighthouse is in it's own little triangle and governed by the coast guard... the lighthouse itself is automated and fully functioning

    What qualifications do I need to become a light keeper?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  Месяц назад

      You would need to be a Canadian citizen or resident and you need to have a marine radio operator certificate.
