    For those mentioning about tighteing the filter too tight, I totally get it. It does look like I am really tightening it like there is no tomorrow. (it is those giant muscles you see strainging there) Reality is, I am not tightening it that much, maybe more than a 3/4 turn but I have learned from having to work on the diesels from previous keepers, too tight means you are not getting that thing off without a screwdriver through the middle of it for leverage. I tend to go with a snug fit but not so tight you won't get the darn thing off. As I have to do this every 4000 hours per generator, you get used to how tight it needs to be before it is just too darn tight to get off! I appreciate all you guys looking out for me!!

    Are there service intervals for the pistons etc. or will the whole engine be replaced after some time?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  21 день назад +1

      Normally we will swap between engines every 15th and 30th if they are running 24/7. This way neither engine has to do too much work and it helps keep everything in good order. I have heard of one station that one of the engines did not work as so they were on a single engine 24/7 for a year and a half, with shutdown only for servicing. They are pretty robust engines and are real workhorses
      There is a mechanic crew out of the CCG base who comes out twice a year for maintenance. They adjust valves, replace belts and just check the engines over for any mechanical issues. If an engine does break down it would need to be replaced which is a pretty big effort. Just transporting an engine to a site is a big task, then trying to install it is a big team of people who need to get it done.

    So how many litres (not inches) of oil is a normal change?
    It gives some idea of how the oil lasts 4000 hours.
    If the generator engine runs @ 3000rpm....
    the equivalent of say a 2 litre engine @ cruise @65mph....
    then 4000 hours would be equivalent of a car doing 4000 x 65 miles = 260,000 miles.
    A normal 2 litre car has a sump capacity of 3.5 litres (About a US gallon) and should be changed @ 5000 miles for conventional oil.
    The only way that the oil in the generator can last for 55x as long...
    is to have a huge sump capacity.. say 192 litres . (3.5 x 55)
    (About 16 litres less than one full 208 litre drum)
    I'll be interested to know.
    Has any though been given to installing a Mann and Hummel centrifuge on each engine to "polish" the oil which could extend it's life even further?
    Are these Deutz air cooled engines....
    air cooling so no mucking about with coolant...
    but how is the cooling air handled going in and coming out of the engine room?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  22 дня назад +1

      Thank you very much for your questions, it is appreciated. I can not be considered a mechanic at all and so I can only respond using my limited knowledge and experience.
      The amount of oil used is not measured by litres unfortunately. All the oil ends up in the large square container underneath the engine. It is fulled until the gauge reads full. A full tank takes somewhere betwen half to 3/4 of a drum. I would say your math is pretty close for what is being used, from my limited understanding.
      Adding anything to a system is a long and difficult process. The Canadian Coast Guard is a government branch and so any expenditures go thorugh a long process of approvals before actually coming to fruition. There is a push to move towards renewables including solar and wind and I feel like the focus is in that direction more than a focus on refining the diesel engines. The diesels are workhorses and have little to no issues with them and they just run forever so messing around with any of the systems that make them work I feel might not be something that anyone wants to mess with. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. lol.
      Again, my knowledge on the actual engines is limited, but the word Deutz has been thrown around in the past and so I am leaning toward them being this type of engine. The room has a ventalation system in it that regularly moves the air from one end of the room to the other and temperature sensors are used to turn on or off fans to help push the air around as needed. As the building is made of block and there is only one window on the water side of the building, it actually stays pretty cool in there even during the summer, which we rarely see anywhere over 24 degrees outside.
      Hope that helps answer some of your questions.
