    i was a relief lighthouse keeper with the US Coast Guard in the nineteen sixties and it was the best duty i had in my four years in the Coast Guard. i also served aboard two lightships and enjoyed every minute of my time doing this type of work. i always think back on those great times for me.

      That is amazing! Thanks for commenting. Did they live in my place or the other house? I kind of like the other house better but the Principal Keeper is currently living there. Some day I hope to get it tho....haha

    My family owned a tug and barge operation and I have been up and back on the inside passage 4 times and this place stands out. Its like a painting that looks to good to be real.

      It is not bad but I have been known to do about a model to two models a week so I need to be sure I have enough around so that I don't run out! I have a few delivered each month and that should keep me going for some time.

    nice video Spence! was brought here by your feature on the what is a lighthouse video , which was very informative. I don't think, personally, that i would like to live in that house, yet it suits you! Anyways Spence, keep up the good work and stay gold!

      Hi, thanks for watching. Believe me, this house would not be my first choice either! haha. Eventually I will be moving into a different house once I become principal somewhere. We will see what house I get then.

    that radio-telephone is pretty old I haven't seen one of those since a friend of mine bought a 1970 Dodge Charger that had one mounted on the console, early 1990s, this was before cell phones came out .
    I wonder if it is possible to switch up the bedroom from one side of the house to the other so that you can see the channel from your living room, is there an actual rule that says that you cannot do this ?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  Месяц назад

      There is talk of replacing the radio phone sometime soon. It is pretty old tech for sure. haha.
      No rules on how you have your house set up, just don't start tearing down walls or making huge changes, similar to if you are just renting in the city. One thing that does happen is when you go on vacation and you are away for a few months, sometimes you come back and the keeper who was your relief has moved all the furnature around to suit them! haha.

    Hey Spence, seems like you have a pretty sick setup for modeling where your at now. Was that something that you have always done or did you get into it when you started working as a keeper? I've been getting into modeling since isolation started over in the states, and its been a great way to pass the time. Would love to hear your thoughts!

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  4 года назад +4

      Hey Jordan, hope you are keeping well. Thanks for the complement about my set up but this is going to be temporary to be honest. The table is kind of scary and wobbly and the chair is held together with duct tape! Haha. It works for now but I have a good desk and chair coming that I hope to get this month.... Or maybe next, depending on when the coast guard can get it out to me.
      I have been building since quite young really, likely about 10 or so but never really took it too serious. I was always all over the place with builds and rarely finished a kit. I built everything from cars, planes, military, Gundam, dioramas, pretty much all of it but as I say, nothing ever really got finished. I took several years off while I lived in Hong Kong and in the Philippines and now that I am back in Canada and things are available to me again no problem, I decided to get back into it and be a little more focused. The job only gives me more Incentive as I get few interruptions and I can really get into it. I am currently only doing 1/25 and 1/25 scale and will stay focused on that for a while.
      Being at the station has been great for my building, I have more kits done since I got here than I did the 10 years previous!!! When I am finished with them, I give them away on my other building channel as I really don't have room here. Best to let others enjoy them as well. 😁

    Nice house.. kinda liked it.. do you do any gardening stuff in free time

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  4 года назад +2

      I have mentioned it in previous videos, I am super awesome at killing plants. Not sure what it is about me but I find it super difficult to keep anything plant wise alive. That being said, there is some amazing garden space here on the station and I may try my hand at it again, just to see how it goes. It does depend on where I end up as a permanent keeper tho because it would be unfortunate to start an amazing garden and then have to leave the station before anything happens.
      So it is a decision I am considering.

    I like sea shells and navigation stuff as decorations. A beach house style. When you become a principle lighthouse keeper, will you then be allowed to bring your family to live with you?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  4 года назад +3

      Now that I am permanent, I can bring my family. Currently working on this but there is a lot of paperwork involved.

    Do you have a video that explains difference between primary and what you do? And if ypu don't mind answering how much roughly do light house keepers make?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  3 года назад

      The biggest difference between principal and assistant is the principal has to do all the paperwork. Other than that, duties are pretty much the same and need to be done by both keepers. Wages can change per station, some lighthouses you get paid more than others, depending on how isolated and difficult to get to they are. Wages start around $35000 a year but that will be changing soon with a new contract for government workers.

      Yeah, sorry, in the US everything went automated but the US Coast Guard has sold off a lot of the existing structures so they can be acquired privately, if you really really wanted a Lighthouse.

    • @MrGotropic

      @@BCLighthouseKeeper Yes your interpretation of that movie was funny. If I remember correctly, There was an old abandoned Pulp Mill on the East side of Princess Royal Channel in Swanson Bay, they say it was the 1st Pulp mill in BC. You should run up there in your boat and rummage thru the rumble for old artifacts.
