Schmitt - Mirages, Op. 70 [Orchestral transcription] (Mercier)
I - A la mémoire de Claude Debussy (00:00)
II - La tragique chevauchée (05:47)
Conductor: Jacques Mercier
Orchestra: Lorraine National Orchestra
Composer: Florent Schmitt
The first of the two Mirages numbers is titled Tristesse de Pan. Dedicated memory of Claude Debussy, the great French Impressionist composer who had died in 1918, it’s a work that is opulent and near-magical in its mood and color. Schmitt does an incredible job evoking in musical terms the themes of Fort’s ballad:
“… Pan leaned on his elbows deep down in the lunar wheat fields. Then, from neighboring woods, the nightingale sings to a beautiful full moon, which, on the rising tills of its voice … it seems to be resting - better...

Sabaneyev - Piano Sonata, Op. 15 "In Memory of Scriabin" (Schäfer)
Sabaneyev, a great friend of Scriabin's and a writer of books about him, is one of the most grandiose, but terrifyingly obscure representatives of the great Russian mystical musical movement. His Sonata is incomparable; taking its cue from Scriabin's passionate and transcendent music, it is dedicated to this giant, a monumental figure of great mystical romanticism. Where Scriabin illuminated th...

2:14 what is classical music even about bro😭🙏🏾
an unusually high number of negative comments for a piece of music... this is one of my favorite of medtners. how at 17:40 he just drops this 10/10 gorgeous melody (that i catch myself whistling when i havent even heard this piece in months) and then only uses it in the background and interweaves it, never fully recapitulating. I love how he does stuff like that. such a tease. and the ending oh my days so gorgeous and exciting
These are absolutely fantastic studies for piano! It's been a terrible loss to the musical community these haven't been performed more often. I'm learning the D minor etude of this set - gorgeous harmonies and soaring melody, though not for the pianistic 'faint of heart'. (Rachmaninov was not just 'being nice' when he said he admired Friedman's piano playing.) Beautiful recording by Glebov, I only wish she recorded the entire set of 16 etudes. :)
Amazing, grotesque, strange, winged, terrorsurging, raving-dancing, sudden-collapsing, delirant, celestially-voluptuous, blinking-25-note-chordesque, universal-heat-deadly... I want to die!! (Of joy)
Does anyone know where to find recordings of those not performed here?
Except his degree of difficulty,…witch is astonishing,… his musical theme’s are so surprising and inventive! I love this very much!
So beautiful yet unbelievably underrated! This is much more interesting than all of Rach concertos
The pianist is Artur Pizarro, not "Pizzaro".
I feel some Liebestod energy in No.2.
I think the cadenza starts at 13:25 not 15:28.

what's going on at the end, why does she play eighths instead of sixteenths? And the drummer with cymbals is lagging behind a little earlier (31:00)
There are issues similarly at 8.06 and beyond for a few bars in the right hand, .. a lack of memory, or just too difficult? No matter - it still remains a wondrously joyful concerto and I would LOVE to hear this live, with the most uplifting climaxes, just once in my lifetime ... maybe at the BBC Proms sometime soon?
can anyone mention the incredible inner voicing from 1:05??!! This is just Crazy!!!
Unbelievable voicing. It's why I've loved this recording for years. This piece sounded like thunder, it's incredible. I'm so glad you noticed it too!
I'm not sure I heard that Scriabin was into theology, and he believed that he can touch, talk with god through music. listening to this piece, it feels like a man fighting for interact god, but did not make it. This piece is just Unreal. Can't express with text.
The Poltergeist has to be one of the cutest piano pieces I've ever heard.
BELLEZA ABSOLUTA!!!!!!
1:59 those chords, it's insane
Night burger. Midnight burgerr…
Prokofiev said Mendtner’s piano music is beautifully pianistic, but it’s extremely difficult get into the fingers. If you’re a pianist you’ll understand.
There doesn’t seem too many recordings of the Minicosa Sonata. Hamelin said it’s the only piece he gets nervous about performing live. It’s like a buttoned down version of Islamay
It's an extraordinary performance. Virtuosic, expressive, voice articulation and thrilling. There's a wonderful detail at 1:16 where Sultanov emphasises the bass notes in the LH chords (Cb Db Eb) - I've heard this 00s of times and never heard a pianist do that. Such a terrible tragedy he died so young.
"именитыЕ музыканты"
Да, увы, вы правы, дорогие друзья - комментаторы: Метнер недооценён. Как и многие другие:Поуленк, Момпту (не знаю, как правильно пишется его фамилия по-русски). Это потому, что именитых музыканты предпочитают исполнять произведения именитых композиторов.
Tozer has no idea how to play this sonata
Medtner is so utterly enjoyable, so pianistic, so unique, not grotesque like Alkan, not narcissistic like Scriabin. The Romantic Prokofiev, if you will. Okay, maybe part Schumann, part Rachmaninov.
This piece is very haunting
What a madlad the prokofiev was.
8:06:34
Maybe the greatest video on youtube ever!!!
9:19 that is possibly the most violent sounding bass note I have heard in my entire life and I LOVE IT
Molto bello!! Un po' rach.....
No. 5 is the ultimate octave etude for my taste! :-)
I imagine number V tells a story, vaguely reminiscent of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It begins with an imperial annoucement from some mighty boss figure. Then a timid but also courageous figure starts picking at something he shouldn’t, gradually becoming more bold. Etc
The harmony at 7:21 is like a breath of fresh air.
55:03 bro these 2 chord modulations are amazing, i wish the composer expanded on them
Du très grand Prokofiev !
woah
Why oh! Why, have I never heard of this genius?
08:19 27:29
reading through the comments, i can see people either really, really love or really dislike this concerto. while yes, I do think bortkiewicz’s first and second concertos were even better, there’s no denying that this is a masterful work with some really beautiful themes, especially the fourth and fifth movements. it is quite repetitive, and i do agree some of the piano passages are pretty dry melodically, but i do really like the ‘per aspera ad astra’ - going from darkness to light, i don’t think I’ve come across another work that does that. overall, 7/10, great piece and definitely worth listening to. edit: i think it’s really depressing that the organ literally only plays 1 chord at the very end, it could have been so much cooler if it was used throughout the concerto
eckardstein plays the cleanest, best thought out and planned interpretation of this piece by far. Ponochevny may have paved the way, but it is not even an argument as to which is a better performance - Eckardstein is king of this piece. This channel actually has his performance up, if you like the piece you should absolutely listen to Eckardsteins interpretation ruclips.net/video/KhsD1MeQaXM/видео.html
