Bortkiewicz - Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 16 (Shadrina, Sukach) [Christmas Special No. 4]

  • I. Lento, Allegro deciso - 00:00
    II. Andante sostenuto - 16:17
III. Molto vivace e con brio - 22:07
Bortkiewicz’s Piano Concerto No 1 is one of the great ‘fun’ concertos with its heady bravura writing, lush orchestration, strong, well-wrought and effective material and, in the first movement, one of the most seductive, romantic themes of the whole genre. Hollywood never had it this good-close your eyes and black-and-white films of lost love, heartache and yearning passion are conjured up. If the other two movements are less successful they are only slightly so; the second is a gorgeously tuneful Andante, the Finale a Russian dance. Chronologically, of course, Hollywood has nothing to do with Bortkiewicz and his First Concerto. Dedicated to his wife, the work was premiered in 1912 (and published the following year), after which it was taken up enthusiastically.

Something many composers struggle with is expanding on ideas, often making their music sound like it is jumping from idea to idea too quickly. However this composer is excellent when it comes to sticking to an idea or theme, and expanding upon it.

4:32 - 6:03 OH MY GOD!!!! That is so so so unbelievably beautiful. I had goosebumps all the way through that passage. Oh My God. I just know that would make me cry so badly if I saw it live.
Edit: Nevermind I just got to the end of the first movement and am sufficiently in tears. I dread to think what would happen if it were a live orchestra.
Edit 2: Made it to the end and cried twice more. Oops haha
Also a sidenote - the opening is v. reminiscent of Dvorak's New World second mvt opening

Thank you for the upload. You've put a lot of effort to sync the sheet music with the recording. Good quality recordings of this masterpiece are so hard to find!
In my opinion, this recording doesn't do enough justice to the wonderful concerto.
I've felt more than once that it may not have been rehearsed enough before the performance.
For example, 27:47 could easily be an inspiration for a James Bond movie (just like Bortkiewicz's 2nd concerto, lol). However, it sounds here like the performers desperately tried to keep track of the rhythm and sacrificed the musical balance.

the reason why is he still unknown, and probably will be unknown forever is just as happens in Pop Music, he didn't have a hit piece. You need that one piece that will appear on the music for the millions albums and playlists. As soon as people as familiar with your name they are interested in the rest of your output. it's sad but true. For years i'm annoyed by the constant repetition of just a handfull of pieces being performed just like those few are the only masterpieces and thousands of equally good works being ignored. Every vinger-exercise by Mozart or Haydn is played like its a masterpiece while we all know that Mozart and Haydn also wrote a lot of average music. And thus a lot of absolute masterpieces are doomed to the dusty shelves forever.

Really good performance. Similar in approach to the Coombs recording, but a bit nippier in the finale, which works, I think. The only thing is that the cutoff after each movement is quite sudden. I imagine that there was quite a bit of audience noise, but a more subtle fade would have helped.

This is actually from Chopin's 4th Sonata 😀. It's so beautiful I don't mind this composer borrowing ideas from other composers. He knows exactly how to incorporate the music, and he also has his own beautiful voice.

why didnt I know about this composer?? What a shame I missed his music for so many years. I didnt realise he exists! breath taking music.... as good as Rachmaninoff's best music! Come on...let us make this guy famous. He deserves it though he is no longer alive.

hi there! would you like my recording of the first movement? I am a young urchin seeking to revive his music, though my influence may be small i hope to create a revival for this composer's amazing music!
