Model 3 - FSD Supervised 12.4.3 - Forced 180 Test Loop - 2024.15.15 - 6 July 2024
This is the full unedited drive on to my old forced 180 turn testing area.
Interesting results for the 180 degree turn and funny situation it got itself into after I completed the turn. I don't consider that a problem but I let it play out to see how FSD Supervised handled the situation.
Only intervention was to push it to creep forward for a right turn on red and then to proceed once clear.

Not the best drive unfortunately. Car would not commit with clear left turns a couple of times. Left lane changes for an upcoming turn way too late several times. Was in the correct lane, then left it and got back at the last possible moment sometimes putting it in a very bad spot when it didn’t need to.

Ok drive on Test Loop 1 with FSD Supervised 12.4.3. One noticeable regression is the car didn’t slow properly for any of the 3 speed bumps. Vehicle also still pulls into suicide lane and signaled after it started moving out of the lane.

This drive was doing well until we had a rapid succession of issues. First issue was the car missed its navigation route due to not moving over soon enough. After it missed its route it recalculated but missed that turn and stopped in the travel lane, thankfully with no one behind us while it recalculated again. After we rerouted and got back on our path the car had trouble deciding which left ...

Test Loop 1 didn’t really see any improvements. Felt like the car was a little slower than normal so speed control is still an issue. 2 disengagements: first for speed bumps, a couple this time and another disengagements for using the suicide lane and not exiting it with no traffic. 1 Intervention for speed control. I could have tapped it a couple other places but I only actually did once.

The only critique I would mention is not yielding for the person trying to change lanes. That is something nice you can do but it is not something you are required to do. The people that piss me off the most are the people who intentionally stay in an ending lane knowing it is ending and expect you to just make space.

Curios why it is improper to do a lane change in an intersection (as you noted) so long as you have a clear view into the lane you are turning jnto and can see that there are no cars slowing down to make a turn. Is it illegal to do so?

This version seems to finally leave a larger gap in front in heavy traffic. That's great. Means smoother ride, safer ride and less harsh braking necessary if the car in front does some heavy braking. It allows also for more economic driving, as the ego car makes more use of regen if the car in front stops, as it can do this slower. Great progress there. :)

I've had v12.3.6 for awhile and it does many things well but has some of the same issues as what I'm seeing in this video (last-second lane changes, hesitation at intersections) plus some other issues (speed limits based on erroneous map data instead of posted speed limit signs, hard braking at intersections when the traffic signal changes to yellow), but I've decided I don't want to pay Tesla $99/month to test their FSD software. Tesla should pay me $99/month to test their software. When FSD can drive as confidently as I can while also driving safely, then I'll be the first to renew my subscription. It's really starting to feel like neural nets as an autonomy solution are hitting a plateau, where emphasizing something in the training makes something else regress. The momentum seems lost compared to the first v12 wide release. Maybe better hardware could help that, but it's hard not to lose confidence watching these test drives.

That's because the neural net is pretending to know how to drive, versus knowing how the roadways work and driving based on rules, like us humans do. Eventually they will need to inform the neural network with much more knowledge of the world, ballooning the compute required to drive as well as a competent human driver can.

@@user-py7or7zi5k The problem with code is that it takes time to load and run - leading to slower decision making from FSD. Will not surprise me if Tesla resort to using LiDAR or ultrasonics. At the moment all that Tesla seems to be doing is throwing billions of dollars at compute and AI with minimal or no progress in the driving experience. What a waste of resources!
