    • @baxrok2.

      You just count the teeth. If the pulley is in the right place the ninth tooth automatically lines up with the sensor. At that point, you just count the teeth to the slot in the timing gear.

    This is a good explanation, it's just the whole idea of keyless doesn't look good to me. I build race motors, and not using dial indicators, degree wheels, and locking things in position beforehand, doesn't seem accurate/fool-proof enough for me, eg, resting a certain length protrusion bolt against a flat on a crank can introduce errors if it's a tny bit out. A quick tip is to use a pushrod, ie, it has an oil hole in the end, or drill an indent into the end of your rod, and that will hold the tip of a dial indicator, which will give you a more accurate location of TDC.

    Thanks for being very thorough. One thing I do want to bring up, is this: We don't always remove the engine from the car. So turning the crank to bring back to top dead center would probably have to be done by turning the flywheel. Remove the starter and access it from there. With a large prytool it can be done and may take a few tries, it will get done. Appreciate you taking the time. Carlos

    It would probably be a good idea to heat the drill bit you used with a torch to take the heat tempering out of it to make it tougher to break before you installed it.

      Use a thin screwdriver, punch, or pick to knock it out from the inside. Or, bend down the edges from the top so you can grab it with pliers to pull it out. Be careful not to damage the valvecover to prevent leaks. You can do it!

    this series is the best thing ever. i am on my way to part 4. i do have a question to anyone who may know. i am seeing statements that the Mazda 2.5 is an interference engine. from the videos it appears to not be. does anyone know for sure who has done this? also if it is not an interference engine and you loose a timing chain is it catastrophic?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2. 6 месяцев назад

      This is an interference engine. I show it directly from the Mazda document in one of the videos.

    • @brenthann2623
      @brenthann2623 6 месяцев назад

      @@baxrok2. final question, how were you able to spin the crank over if the engine is interference. It seems like the pistons would contact valves on the intake or exhaust strokes?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2. 6 месяцев назад

      @@brenthann2623 Well, that's exactly what timing is all about. If the timing is right, things don't hit each other!

    • @brenthann2623
      @brenthann2623 6 месяцев назад

      @@baxrok2. im sorry i was unclear. i was asking about you showing the crank being rotated while you had the timing plate in the cam shafts. you rotated the crank 360 to TDC and my confusion was thinking the pistons should have hit whatever valves were open when the crank turned.

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2. 6 месяцев назад

      @@brenthann2623 If the timing plate is holding the cams, that means that the crankshaft isn't locked down. That means that the crank can rotate, the chain won't move, but the crank and pistons will move. Once the timing plate is in the cams, they absolutely can not move and are in the right position to allow the pistons and crank to go 360.

    Does the VVT actuator need to be aligned a certain way? There are so many videos out there where they mark the VVT actuator before removing it, to ensure it goes back in the same position on the cam. What is the significance of that? Also, should the VVT actuator be locked with pin when timing? Or floating?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2. 7 месяцев назад

      Yes, the actuator needs to be in the right position because as it advances and retards the timing the cam lobes need to be in the right or expected spot relative to the actuators position. I don't have any experience with the VVT actuator. I never needed to mess with it at all. Also, when I did the timing, I didn't have to touch it. I don't know if it was locked or floating, whatever state or position that it was in at the time, was how I left it.
