I fix my transmission by following your tutorial. When I opened the transmission, there were the 3 parts of the pin! It took me a little over 2 hours. I put a nail and it is working great. Thank you so much, you saved me money by not having to buy a new one!
Thank you for the video. My wheels were frozen up with dirt and rust. The cables were shot, too! I attempted to remove the bottom cover of the transmission, but saw that the shaft was turning when I turned the pulley, so I put the screws back in the cover and looked farther to the wheels. I did have a devil of a time removing the right gear behind the wheel. I stripped the T30 screw head. I finally welded a T30 tip to the screw head and was able to remove the screw. I replaced it with a 1/4 x20 Phillips screw. Great explanation of the inner workings of the transmission. Thanks again!
Follow up on my front wheel drive problems: after cleaning up the axle shaft and outer gears and wheels, now the wheels will slowly turn, but will stop once the wheels contact the ground. The pulley and axle shaft are spinning, but the wheels will not pull the motor. I suspect the inside of the transmission is bad. I may try to mess with it, but I may just use it as a push mower now that the wheels turn freely. Do you have a source part number for the transmission if I choose to replace it? Thanks!
Thanks for this. Just did this repair on my mower yesterday. Only took a couple hours and I only had to remove the bottom case of the transmission once it was off the mower. Saved me some cash!
Man U saved my butt seriously I’ve used this mower like a pro, literally doing 5 big yards a month n a bigger cemetery not to mention I’ve used it like a brush hog, can’t beat it with the Honda motor but short of this issue I’ve got slick front wheels in under two years but man it’s a solider mower for certain! I was at a loss as to what was a miss til I saw this TY!!! 1k fold over!!!
Great video! I have a Canadian Tire yardworks mower. The Briggs & Stratton motor is a beast but the rest is all from China! The transmission went on it but was under warranty. Going forward if it breaks again I’ll have the confidence to fix it myself. Thanks for your very informative video.

Good show! I was able to reach in with a pair of box end wrenches and unbolt the end pieces from the deck without removing the wheels. Just have to carefully pry it apart, but no big effort. Thanks for the specs on that pin. I wonder how many hundreds of dollars people have spent on replacing these things over a stupid low grade pin that fails. 😡 Thanks for sharing. 👍🙂
Great vid..probably be doing this repair very soon on my Troy-bilt self propelled. My "tractor ain't got no traction" as the old saying goes even though its a walk behind push mower lol.
Just cracked open my transmission. Pin intact. The retaining spring was broken!!!! Of course, the transmission is obsolete, and no parts available. Off to Ace Hardware to see if I can find a compression spring!!!
Did you miss us? :) Nice to see you post again. You explained the details of the procedure very well so if anyone needs this information they have no need to search elsewhere.
Excellent video! My troy bilt self propelled pushing mower (TB320 21" , 2013) transmission was failed due to a severely worn helical gear. Don't know where this gear is available and couldn't find the part number either.

It would probably be a good idea to heat the drill bit you used with a torch to take the heat tempering out of it to make it tougher to break before you installed it.
Great video and very helpful but is the pin 3mm(.118") or is it 1/8" (.125") diameter because those would be common dowel pin sizes and readily available in the length you show. If you install a 3mm pin in a 1/8" hole the shaft hole will rapidly deform and that will cause the pin to fail again soon.
Beautifully done video sir, thanks for posting! I know you don't have this particular mower any more, but it wasn't totally clear to me, what was the original symptom that led you to tear into the transmission in the first place? By the way, McMaster-Carr carries various grades and lengths of stainless steel stock and dowel pins that might work for replacing the old pin. Thanks again!
Great video! I am trying to repair the connection between the drive cable on the 220 and the transmission. The spring is broken and the video does cover how the full transmission connects to the drive cable. Would love to see a view of how everything connects. I cannot find a view. Thanks!
Chris, I'm very sorry but I no longer have the mower in my possession. It now belongs to my X wife! You can try an online image search for something like - how to replace a troy-bilt drive cable. Of course, you might do the same for a RUclips search. Sorry I couldn't be more help and good luck!

I used some Permatex Ultra Grey Silicone Gasket Maker. I had it lying around so that's what i used. Anything you have lying around will probably work just fine.
Awesome video! Requesting some advice. Checked Google a number of different ways and didn't quite find what I was looking for... With engine in or off, my Troy-Bilt Xp self-propelled pushnower squeaks substantially from the rear axle as you walk it around. I've serviced both wheels via lubing the gears, axle ends, and sleeves and detemined it was the trans from balancing the rear up on a block, spinning the wheels by hand, and hearing the noise come from the transmission. I hope to take the trans apart, identify why it squeaks, flush it and add new fluid. What kind and volume of oil is generally used? Is a permatex silicone gasket bead appropriate for sealing these up? Thank you!!!
I do not have access to a factory service manual. In my opinion, a gear oil around 90 weight or so will do. As for volume I'd say around 1 ounce or so. You can measure the amount that comes out and use that for your approximate amount to put back in. Yes, Permatex gasket sealant, the gray kind found in auto parts stores, should do just fine. Good luck!
I have one of the gears inside my transmission that had a couple of chunks out of it as well as part of the pin missing. I will do the same as you for the pin, but cannot find the gear on line anywhere without having to buy the whole transmission. I have model#12A-466M011. Can you advise please? Thanks for an awesome video!
It's very difficult to find parts for lawn mowers for a number of reasons. If you are very handy and patient at searching the internet, with some work you might be able to find the part. If that doesn't work for you, then you can go to a local mower shop and try to find someone with enough patience and skill to help you. Finally, you might go online to a site like Craigslist and find a used mower that someone is selling or giving away and try to scavenge the parts from it. No matter which way you choose, unfortunately, I don't think it will be very easy.
I had a.pt cruiser 2007 that the pin on the exhaust cam broke off which knocks.it.out.of time. Odays hardware.in pearland texas had the.pin i needed. Odays.pearland may have this pin on video too.
I have a Troy Built B&S TB240 walk behind. Today the drive lever just went quickly limp. I took the assembly apart that is fixed on the handle. Nothing wrong there. But How in the world do I get the cowl off to see if the cable wire came off, came loose, broke or whatever. I have a feeling the way it snapped something came off under the plastic cowl. But how to get that darned plastic thing off. I can do without the drive although it's going to be hard for the time. 71 here I use it for a few small grades out front. Can you walk me through how to get the cowling off? Thanks so much.
Would you be so kind as to let me know what you used to remove the old sealer and what sealer (product) did you use to seal the case at re-assembly? Thank you
Tony, I used a metal scraper and some brake clean (non-chlorinated) to carefully removed as much as possible. You'll never get it all off. I used a generic gray automotive gasket sealer to seal it up.
Great video.. My pin broke exactly the same in three equal parts. Its almost like they score them so that they all break exactly like that. Then they can get people unwilling to fix it to replace the entire transmission. Anyway...what oil did you use? I already tossed mine as it was pretty grimy.
