  • I'm putting a 2.5L Ford Fusion engine in place of the 2.3L engine in my sons 2005 Mazda 3S.
    The 2.3L has 150kmi and is using a quart of oil every 400mi. The VVT gear is also bad causing that nasty rattle on startup. The original clutch just went out so the time is right for a swap.
    The car does not smoke when running or on startup. There are no oil leaks. Other than the VVT rattle it generally runs fine and there are no CEL's or anything else, it just uses a ton of oil.
    The swap engine is a 2011 2.5L Ford Fusion engine from a local salvage yard. It has 58kmi on it.

      Great! Be sure to visit Mazda3Forums and look for the two threads on this swap. There you'll find important details that will help you. Also, I'm in the process of making a video or two on the timing procedure. Hopefully it will help people understand the process a bit better. Video your swap and put it on YT!

    Where did you find info about the cam swap I can’t find a removal instruction video

      I found the info on Mazda3Forums.com

    What would you say is the simplest engine to look for to replace a 2006 Mazda 3 2.3, if I went to a Ford 2.5. Would the timing issue be easier with a 09 or older?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  3 года назад

      I used a 2011 Fusion 2.5. It's a lot of work no matter what. The timing isn't that hard at all once you know how to do it. The challenge is just that there are a lot of parts to swap over from the Mazda to the Ford.

    Is it possible to place Mazda 6 2009 2.5 engine into Mazda 6 2005 2.0?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  3 года назад

      I think so. However, to be sure, go to Mazda3Forums.com and look around there to be sure. If it can be done, somebody there has done it.

    hi there,i am running into a little problem just wondering if you could help. I swapped mazda3 2006 2.3L engine with mazda5 2.3L that came with its wiring and all that however when i start it turns over but doesnt start. Would really appreciate if you know on what else do i need to do to get this working. Thank you kindly

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  8 лет назад

      I don't know since there are so many things that could be happening.
      Regarding the wiring, you should be using all of the 2006 Mazda 3 wiring
      and none of the Mazda 5 wiring. I would also use all of the Mazda 3
      sensors including the Mazda 3 throttle body. Start with those things.
      Also, go to the Mazda3Forums.com and look for the two threads for the
      2.5L engine swap. Someone there might be able to help you. Good luck!

    Hello there. I have an 05 with the same issue. I want to do a 2.5 fusion swap but i dont want to get into pulling out the cams. Is it possible to just swap to an 09 ecu/harness and put the fusion engine to avoid having to switch the cams? I would like to keep ford oil pan and accesories. Any input would be appreciated

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  6 лет назад

      I don't know if you can use the 09 ECU/harness. I don't recall anyone ever doing that. Go to Mazda3Forums.com and search for the 2.5 swap threads. If it can be done, somebody there has done it and documented it. FWIW, swapping the cams is probably easier than messing around with wiring harnesses and potential ECU issues!

    Is there any particular reason why you're going with a 2.5 L versus the original 2.3 if there's really no power gain or performance gain

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  5 лет назад

      Yes. The 2.5's from the Fusions are significantly less expensive, much lower mileage, and significantly easier to find than the Mazda engines. Also, they are not plagued by the notorious Mazda 2.3 rod knock and ring failure issues.

    Latter you will have the cat code come up . If the oil burning up in the cat .

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  7 лет назад

      Yeah, I figured that after burning oil for that long the cat was shot, so I put a new cat in while I was doing the swap.

    • @Buckarooskiczek

      My cat clogged and caused the EGR to melt the intake...no codes! Pretty sure oil is going down the valve guides because compression is perfect. Doing a leak-down before I do a swap, too...I just gotta know!

    Was the 2.3 a turbocharged engine?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  6 лет назад

      val effect It came both ways. Turbo charged in the Mazdaspeed models and normally aspirated in the S models.

    do you know if you can use a 2013 fusion engine?

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  6 лет назад

      AFIK 2012 is as new as you can go. Go to Mazda3forums.com or to the corresponding Fusion forum to get more info. It's been a while now since I've done my swap and I may be wrong. Good luck.

    Is there any way you can message me or email me, on instructions of taking out the engine. Im just swapping with a engine of the same kind but has 50 k miles

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2.  6 лет назад

      I'll give you something better than me telling you. Go to Mazda3Forums.com and find the 2.3 to 2.5 engine swap threads. Guys have written step by step guides, with photos, on how to do the swaps. A same kind swap (vs a 2.3 to 2.5 swap) is very easy and the same steps apply to pulling and replacing the engines. Good luck!
