NEW, Improved Venus Flytrap Feeding Method
Following on from my last Venus Flytraps 'how to grow' guide I explain my revolutionary and successful feeding technique. Due to popular demand, I further explain a Venus Flytrap feeding technique which I literally discovered by accident. It's a technique which is exciting, fun, simple and most of all works!
It's basically a technique which 'fools' Venus Flytraps into thinking there's something alive in traps even though the food item is non-living. I achieve this by twirling fishing line inside the traps after food items have been lowered into the traps. This is important because Venus Flytraps won't digest food items unless there's movement within the closed traps. Whether you're growin...

Taking My Carnivorous Plant Garden To The Next Level!
Hi I just bought 2 Venus fly traps & I am enchanted Found your website to buy some Sarracenia , you have some beauty's , then I was sent to your utube channel So Shall watch them , we are going into plants dormancy ,is it time to buy from you . Please advise Judy
Hi Judy ......North American pitcher plants and Venus Flytraps are dormant or should going into dormancy right now. I would say early spring would be a great time to buy as the plants AWAKEN with hungry appetites and produce brand new pitchers. Let me know your email and I can place a reminder into my calendar so I don't forget you.
you remind me of John Constantine's actor who played Santan : Peter Stormare
Thank you.
Also, what does that mean when you say, G7 cultivar
Hi there .....G7 cultivar refers to a plant that was selected for its bright red traps and vigorous growth in the early nineties. See www.littleshopofhorrors.co.uk/product/venus-flytrap-g7/ Happy growing!
My leaves are flat to the soil. I worry they might get too wet. Does this mean it’s not healthy I just bought it. They don’t seem to stick straight up like yours do
Hi there and thanks for your enquiry. The type of cultivar that you have and the time of year determines how your plant looks. For example my Big Mouth cultivars have big red traps with short leaf bases. The shorter leaf bases makes the plants produce traps which are flatter or closer to the ground. Other cultivars such as Dentate produce upward facing traps with long leaf bases. Also in mid to late Autumn (Fall) plants produce shorter stubbier leaves. This prepares the plant for winter dormancy. Again the shorter leaf bases makes the traps appear to be flatter to the soil. This is especially noticeable with long leafed cultivars such as Dentate (Sharks Tooth) and G16 x G16. If your not sure if your plant is healthy or not then I always advise to make sure you're getting the 5 basics right (see below). At least you then know that the GROWING AND CARE REQUIREMENTS have been met: - Light (at least 5 hours of direct sunlight) - Water (making sure your potting medium never dries out). - The quality of the water which is adequate (not too high in dissolved solids - less than 50 ppm). - Using a peat moss based medium aerated with pumice or sand. - Acess to insects (or food items) for extra vitality and growth. Hope this helps and Happy Growing to you. 😊
I successfully germinated and grew them from seed about 2 years go. Divided into individual pots and I have 3 or 4 small juvenile plants now!
That's awesome! Its been one of the most satisfying things I've done.....germinating Sarra seeds. I love the fact that you get to choose which plants will be cross pollinated. I just potted one of my seedlings from this project into a pumice planter. Its absolutely gorgeous. I wish you many happy moments with your juvenile plants and watching them grow into individual plants with their own unique characteristics.

很棒的视频
🔥🔥🔥
I saw your earlier video where you mentioned this method and instantly subscribed. Definitely unique to you. It really seems like the extra stimulation helps them close more tightly and digest better than the squeeze method. Day and night difference in terms of how long the trap stays shut and what's left behind.
Thanks for your subscription....much appreciated! I reckon the line brushing past the trigger hairs does a good job of mimicking a struggling insect....I always imagine a trapped fly beating its wings whenever I apply the fishing line method.......Happy growing to you!
i like the squeeze method. so much easier and it works when they are super tiny too if are really careful with tweezers. just put the food in. then squeeze the traps softly every 30 seconds or so for a few minutes. and maybe a few more times through out the day if you aren't sure its sealing.
Yes the squeeze method is very popular and it does work. However when the traps are close together I find it harder to apply the squeeze method. With small traps (less than 1cm (0.4 inch) I just place the bloodworms directly on the fishing line and place them into the traps. I then give the fishing line a twirl and the traps begin digesting extremely quickly. In my experience the smaller traps digest much faster and it seems less work is required. Happy growing!
I get live crickets and woodies (a type of cockroach) for my bearded dragon from the pet shop. Not sure of the nutrition value for the plants, but I give the odd cricket or woodie to my for traps. It seems to work well.
Hi Dave .....live crickets and cockroaches would definitely be nutritious for the plants! The only issue is that they're pretty active. Forceps would be an ideal tool item to place them in the traps .....happy growing to you mate !
14:22 GENIUS! Love this idea especially for outdoor plants! I wonder how much more efficient trap closure is with the fishing line. Have you done a side-by-side comparision with the gentle pinch method? Something like feed 20 traps and for half do a gentle pinching every couple minutes and the other have just use the fishing line ... and see how many successfully close from each group.
Yes that would be an interesting experiment. The fishing line method I think more closely resembles or mimics struggling insects so I would expect the 'strike rate' to be higher using fishing line. The really interesting thing is that I'm noticing that some plants close and digest more slowly regardless of what technique you use. For those plants I like to leave the fishing line in the traps and allow the breeze to do its work. Thanks for your comment and Happy Growing to you!
I had a venus fly trap in middle school... then my sister fed it a grape and it died :(
Great, informative video - thanks! I've been focusing more on Nepenthes and Pinguicula so haven't grown Venus fly traps for a long time but have just bought one and ordered another 3 from Italy - they should hopefully do well outside here in the south of Spain.
Will Venus Flytraps eat bugs off of houseplants? Like if I i have gnats on a houseplant and I i put my Venus Flytrap next to it will it be able to eat any of those?
Hello Jerry, I was just wondering about rain water etc. could the water Collected from a clothes dryer condenser be alright ? Mine reads ooo ppm, just as rainwater reading. Thank you for all your videos, they’re very informative.
Very clever technique with the fishing line. Your plants are gorgeous! Subscribed
It worked my Venus fly trap ate the fly.😊🎉
Nice video! Very informative! One little thing though... might not be a good idea to keep a sundew warm during winter if conditions dont allow it to grow. You might trick it into growing when its supposed to be dormant and that can take a lot of energy out of your sundew leading to slow growth during spring. Keep it watered and protected from frost. If you do have to bring it inside because of conditions, dont put under grow lights. Just a nice garage with a tiny window is what you want during winter. Altogether thou great video!
Now that plant against the wall I have one exactly the same but it seems to be losing its leaves any tips to save my plant? It was gifted by my grandmother 😢 not sure what to do?
SO MANY thanks. I strongly want to healthfully grow these plants. YOU have well provided me with things that I need to know before beginning. I simply cannot be the only follower of you in my category. We thank you.
I had one years n years ago when i was a kid. Id like to get a couple Venus fly trap plants, I shall name them Hannibal and Wild Bill
I just got one to help control fungus gnats. Thanks for the informative video!
Question, can I grow Venus fly trap in a terrarium?
I’ve only had mine for a week now that’s why I’m watching this video but it’s already got two plies and I’m fixing to want to get another one. I love these plants.
Thank you for the info.
Thanks so much for your info. Now I have something to work with .....hopefully I'll be able to place a tag with the plant. Cheers
can you culivate carnivourstraps into paperbark trees?
Great video,very informative 👍
Hello, that hybrid Leucophylla sarracenia is probably Skywhatcher. In Europe there is a very similar hybrid called Umlauftiana, they are almost the same with minimal differences in the veins.
Beautiful plants
Thanks for that ....I absolutely love them. To me Autumn is not really Autumn without seeing peaking Leucophyllas .....happy growing to you!
I purchased two Sarracenia leucophylla from you last year. I divided one but kept the other whole - all placed in larger pots. All three are absolutely beautiful and thriving thanks to all your tips. You are right though - not dividing has seen the more vigorous growth. Cheers Jerry!
Hi David ....nice to hear your plants are going really well. Its nice to know the plants I sell are going to good homes .....and caring owners! One day I'll have to see this pitcher plant of yours .....happy growing to you !
Nice cultivar!
I just got a new baby from the store. The traps r not red but I am adapting it 2 more and more sunlight. It has a spider in its trap 2day but it is not closing ? 😮
I very successfully grew Sarracenia psittacina from seed about 35 years ago and have just taken a batch of mixed Sarracenia seeds out of the fridge - first time since way back then. Fingers crossed!
Wow that's a long time ago! Must have been very satisfying seeing them germinate the first time. Hopefully your strike rate is good this time round too.....😊
Just bought a cape sundew and I'm just wondering why the leaves are so short?
This was very informative. I just got my first VFT and I hope it works out. They are very interesting plants!
Note: In winter areas where it drops into the mid 20⁰F (4⁰C), ALL of the leaves may die back and turn black. Don't toss it, the below surface rhizome is most likely still alive. Thanks for the great video.
Ok noted the for thx info pal
Feeding them just once a week is enough and just with one pray, there is no need to do more. Anyway if they are outside, they will catch their own food
What about water during dormancy tho?
They still need to stay damp all the time, just not water logged.
Why is my dormant venus completely goes black and yours look still so good haha
I rescued a couple plants being marked down at Walmart. Now I am trying to find out how to grow them. Thanks. My question is, if you leave them outside all the time, how cold can it stand before I need to protect them?
What soil mixture you are using..and also which type of water and fert
Really enjoyed your video and found it very informative. I'm in the USA but the techniques are very helpful and did help me clear up some confusion I had about watering. I had been told to allow the pot to dry up for 2 or 3 days while cheching the medium to make sure it was still damp. I actually put them in a dry tray and monitor the medium daily.. You confirmed that information so Thank You!
Can I feed my nepenthes flytrap live fly maggots. I live in Mexico and there is a lot of trash around so fly maggots are easy to come by🤢
You can but unless you have a large collection of plants you can't expect them to act like the ultimate pest control, you also might not want to overdo the feeding, but that's more of a personal thing.
Thank you for this video. My wife bought me a very little venus flytrap for valentines day. She knows I love plants! I'm trying to learn all I can!
how much did you owe him lol
Are there any bugs I shouldn't feed my fly trap? Or will they eat anything that can fit?
Hello 👋. Very informative video, by the way. I recently rescued a couple of flytraps from a local garden centre, they were on offer and looking a little ropey. I have a question for you. One seems to have no issues catching insects, traps work perfectly. But the other one doesn't seem to be able to have its traps triggered? I've tried manually to do this by tickling the hairs inside with a re-hydrated meal worm, but non of the traps seem to function? The plant looks healthy apart from the leaves of the traps seem to curl out slightly, compared with the other plant. Any advise would be welcome. 👍 p.s. I tried the same technique on the other plant, and it works a treat.
