  • Leaning pitchers happen for various reasons when growing North American pitcher plants. North American pitcher plants don't have woody branches to support their leaves so leaning pitchers is quite normal for these plants. The reasons for leaning pitchers include:
    - Heavy rain can fill the pitchers with water causing the heavier pitchers to lean over.
    - Strong winds can snap new leaves.
    - Pitchers simply get old and over time just fall by the way side.
Whatever the reason non vertical pitchers can detract the look of your plant making it look less presentable.
Also in extreme cases the angled pitchers become less effective at catching insects. Remember that North American pitcher plants are passive fly catchers.....they don't have any moving parts like Venus Flytraps. Instead North American pitcher plants rely on gravity for the insects to fall into their traps. For this technique to be most effective the pitchers need to be vertically positioned.
In this video I discuss tips to make your North American pitcher plant look more presentable including pruning of damaged or old leaves. I also demonstrate how you can prop up functioning pitches to make your plant look more presentable and more effective at catching insects. Happy growing to you all!
