First Time Camping On Kinder Scout - Such A Stunning Location!
For my first Peak District wildcamp I chose Kinder Scout. The journey up from Gloucestershire was pretty fraught with road closures and delays caused by accident on the motorway but once I got there I was blown away by the place. I went up via Ringing Roger, camped above Grindslow Clough and descended via Grindslow Knoll. with the heather in full bloom and both the evening and morning blessed with sunshine what more could I ask? I'll definitely be back.

When Winds Ruin the Adventure!

What has the Met office got against me? I checked the weather forecast a couple of hours before I left home - in the Brecon Beacons of South Wales winds were predicted at low 20's mph with high 20's / low 30's mph gusts. Only ever been to the Peak District once about 8 years ago, we stopped for 3 days and had 4 days of none stop rain, so never been back. Great views and the heather looked great and hopefully you get a good couple of sunny days in the lakes for Linda's birthday. I hare driving at the best of time but for me the dive to the lakes in over the Moors but the drive to the Peaks is down the A1M, so another reason I have not been back. You got some amazing evening colours in the skies once you pitched up and shame about Linda's shoulder, it's neck with Mrs Metalman. Oh I have had those comments before, you should not have done this of that, you do not take thing seriously when out (I never take anything seriously) and I am a proud fair weather hiker and camper, I never respond either, just delete, block and laugh! Nice morning to wake up too and if there is a good sunrise, I always like to be up for it. Enjoy the Lakes, cheers Alan

Perhaps if people realised how much work is involved in putting out this content for the benefit of others they might think before criticising. I’m 64 and still enjoy these places and will be up there this week but there are people watching these who are not able but still experience what they once had through these videos. Nice to see you enjoying a new area, and good timing for me as I'll be up that direction for the first time at the end of the month! Despite your outstanding demo of the X-Mid, sold the MSR and ended up going with a Lanshan 2. Cant argue with the price really! That would have been a great pitch if it wasn't so windy. No point is losing a night's sleep for nothing, so the right choice I think to bail out. That Toco tent costs £17 at the moment and cheap sleeping bags can be had for less than £10. I suspect some people regard this sort of stuff as disposable and have no respect for the environment.

Thanks! On the way down I met two photographers who had been higher up hoping to take pictures of the Aurora Borealis if it appeared but were coming down as it felt dangerous up there. I had no idea the Aurora was a possibility as it is extremely unusual this far south. It might have tempted me to stay. (I just checked out Sarek - looks amazing)

It wasn't really the Xmids fault, it was handling the wind ok albeit it does stretch in when the wind hits on the long side. It does have it's faults though. I just didn't see the point of sitting it out all night. Had I known the wind was going to be that I would have stayed at home. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger

There aren't a great deal of trail signposts to be honest, but we found the OS maps very accurate through the fields etc at either end of the trail. One tip is to take a path that goes up slightly above the gill up to Lingy Hut. It goes off to the right just above the mine workings at the bottom and goes directly from the hut at the top.

Nice weather and nice views too but is is so annoying when you loose footage, something I have done more than once! Well you certainly found solitude and solitude with a great view too and I remember seeing Pink Floyd at Newcastle City Hall in the early 70s. When the sun did arrive, it arrived with a bang, so a very productive camp I would say, cheers Alan

Thanks Alan. That trip was just what I needed after a hectic time (nowt bad - just busy!). I last saw Pink Floyd at Knebworth 1975, we got the full "Dark Side" and the first performance of tracks from "Animals" and "Wish you were here". Happy days! Thanks for watching, ATB, Roger

A nice, easy watch, Roger. That sunrise was beautiful. I've been fancying a camp at this spot for a few years now, but I've yet to do so. It's a beautiful spot. When I walked the B.W my heart sank when I realised I had to make that descent just to do an ascent straight back up, it was a tough climb too. I'd skip straight across and don't tell anyone 😉
