I remember my mate and his wife doing this trail about 10 years ago and he said it rained every single day, so hopefully you get better weather. Like so many long distance trails (I can think of Hadrian's Wall hike) they all have a very boring start to them and this one looks the same. Mind you, a bacon sarnie makes up for it quite a bit! Nice to get off the roads and tarmac but not keen on those cows, I hate the bloody things, dam dangerous. Good call resting a day in Caldback and missing out on the wind and rain, fingers crossed you have better weather head, cheers Alan
Thanks Alan. We didn't mind the first few miles as we were just starting. I wouldn't like to do those miles at the end though, never been happy approaching cities. Agree about cows, just roo big to mess with! All the best, Roger & Linda
Hi Mr and Mrs Forester, I have to confess this is my first full watch🙏and finally for me I think I managed to connect a little with you at last. Maybe it’s because it’s a trail I did recently or you were are accompanied by your lovely wife. Anyway I look forward to seeing how you get on. I certainly wouldn’t want to be going over the hill in bad weather either. Kind regards 😊🏕️
That's my tent in the background of the outro! Nice to meet you both and hope you enjoyed the rest of the trail. Such a great trip, I'd happily do it again....and probably will!
@@thewanderingforester Yeah finished ok but feet were hurtin really really bad! 😆 I’d do it all again tho, lessons learnt. Still researching tents but x-mid 1 likely. My fat ass MSR for sale - 2.6kg! Also waiting for Zenbivy restock. With those, some poles and a few other changes I’ll be a lot more comfortable next trip. Enjoying reliving my adventure (in reverse) on here and hi to Mrs Forester 👍😊
I’m walking the Cumbria Way “again” in two weeks time from Carlisle to Ulverston did it the other way around last time, so this video has come at the right time, looking forward to watching the rest of your adventure. ATB Karl
Great to see you out on the trail again! I reckon you two must just have smelt nice to those cows. It is intimidating when they follow you around like that 😂 ATB! Sue
Enjoyed that Roger - good going on them hard roads - it takes its toll. I can't understand you pitching where you did. Good to hear the section was prettier that expected - always mice along a river. All the best. Mark
Thanks Mark. We weren't aiming to wild camp on this trip so that pitch was the one allocated to us at the Caldbeck campsite. We were past the tarmac before the thrill of starting wore off!
There aren't a great deal of trail signposts to be honest, but we found the OS maps very accurate through the fields etc at either end of the trail. One tip is to take a path that goes up slightly above the gill up to Lingy Hut. It goes off to the right just above the mine workings at the bottom and goes directly from the hut at the top.
Cows are curious animals. They were just interested in you. They, just like dogs, may be interested in one person but not in another. Recommend staying calm and using calm actions to shoo them. They are big animals but mostly they’re big softies. A simple slow waving of the arms along with an assertive but not shouty, ‘out the way girls’, works for me. Most of the incidents involving cows are in farmyards involving farmers. The next most common are incidents where the walkers have a dog. More people are hurt in bath tubs each year than by cows. Hope this helps.
I was very surprised by those cows being us as they'd shown no interest as we walked by. They were moving quite fast too. We had a few more encounters during the walk as well, we put it down to Linda's bright tops 😄😄😄
Yes Tarmac trudging can be a bit tiresome at times...some of those stiles / gates can be too...High pike would have been a tough walk even for a youngster after those miles...good idea to stay in Caldbeck while the rain passes over.
Yes, we weren't strapped for time so a day's delay seemed the best idea. We met quite a few who were out in the weather and had miserable days. ATB, Roger

Hi Dave, thanks for taking an interest in our trip. Hopefully we can keep you entertained with the rest of it. ATB, Roger
Nice hike, and looking forward to seeing the rest of the trip. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching!

Hi Paul. Was good to spend some time with you. I'm already thinking of the next trail to look at. I trust you finished ok? Any news of tent buying?

Urban to Rural nice and diverse start to this iconic trail Rodger 👌🏻🥾
Good to see Linda with you all the way mate 🤠👍
ATB Simon
Glad you enjoyed it Simon. Starting at the north meant we got all the tarmac out of the way first, rather than slogging into a city at the end.
@@thewanderingforester good idea mate 👍🏔️

It was the speed that they were approaching that really worried me - but just curious really I guess. We blamed Linda's bright top!

@@thewanderingforester It looked a decent camp site Roger.
great work guys
Thank you so much Lee. Good to get day 1 under our belts without mishaps this time.
Great download and big help, looking at taking it up in a couple of weeks, is the trail self explanatory, cheers 👍👏
