No etiquette on the hills now, finding it harder and harder to find somewhere unspoilt. On a brighter note really enjoyed the video, love it when it’s windy but not that windy.
It was too much for me, I'm not going into that weather deliberately - just wish the weather forecast could be trusted a bit more. 😃 And you're right about hill etiquette, becoming less frequent. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
Avoid the Lake District at weekends. Campsite have become expensive so those who would normally go there just pitch up on the hills as if it was a free campsite.
I’ve had to abandon camp twice around pen y fan as assholes turned up with big sound systems speakers blasting out 100 metres from my tent. Really am starting to think I prefer winter camping for solitude
@@thewanderingforester there’s a bbc news article about the huge influx of people to the park this year. With the park asking people avoid until September 😅
Made a good decision there. I was out in my X mid the other month and the wind suddenly picked up out of the blue at about 3:30. I love the xmid but I don't think it's meant for winds on summits so packed up and left just around first light. Might look at getting something more suitable for winds etc. Maybe a tunnel tent or something. I don't intend to go out in high winds but sometimes they just pop up !
The XMid was standing up to the wind but I wasn't enjoying being in it - so why bother. 😃 I have a Big Sky Chinook which handles wind really well but it's stupidly expensive new. I got a good deal on a used one. Thanks for watching.
Hi, Thanks for the reply. How would you say the Big Sky handles the wind etc? I've got a Kuiu Storm thingy but want a lighter smaller one ideally but which is as strong as that in the wind.
I've only been out in it in low 30mph gusts which didn't trouble it. Andy Beavers has one that has been in higher winds I think. Might be worth checking his channel?
A long night in a wind-blasted tent isn't fun. I have two nights permanently etched in my mind where I was bracing the tent from the inside, on absolute pins. I'd rather stay at home!
If only the Met office could get the forecast right! Well to be honest they all the weather right, but not necessarily in the right order.😀 Yeah just very uncomfortable, just glad I was only an hour from the valley. Cheers Chris. ATB, Roger
Nice video Rodger shame you had to bail, I’ve been there and done that you made the right decision. I laughed when you mentioned the OEX phoxx tent, I spotted loads on my last camp weekend just gone and actually mentioned it on my video. Don’t know what the answer is with these “assholes” leaving rubbish everywhere? I’m seeing more and more rubbish in the Lake District, it’s like people just don’t care anymore and do what they like without any consideration to others or the environment. ATB Karl
Thanks Karl. I think the tent would have been ok although it was on the edge of what it would take, I just didn't see the point of staying up there all night in that racket. Hopefully once the holiday season is over the assholes will go home for the winter. ATB, Roger
@@thewanderingforester Totally agree it's not great being in a tent when the winds pick up the noise is horrendous and you get hardly any sleep. I Kkeep looking at these Durston x mid tents. Planning a few more long distance walks and I think it would fit the bill perfectly. ATB Karl
We really like ours. (Also have the 2P for when Linda comes) I think somewhere around 40mph is the top end of wind I'd want to be in it. Can be a little tricky if the pitch is on the small side or particularly bumpy but there are ways around it.
That would have been a great pitch if it wasn't so windy. No point is losing a night's sleep for nothing, so the right choice I think to bail out. That Toco tent costs £17 at the moment and cheap sleeping bags can be had for less than £10. I suspect some people regard this sort of stuff as disposable and have no respect for the environment.
@@thecampingastronomer8554 I'm planning on a return visit when the weather is better, I was hoping for a nice sunrise shining on the escarpment. And £17? - that's amazing. I couldn't report what the lady taking it down actually said about the ones who left it there. Thanks for watching John.
This was just what I needed ❤ thank you for such a good video as usual, cosy yet adventurous 😅 Edit: I've had a similar experience in Sarek, where the weather god crazy, so caved in at 3 at night and just started walking to the next point, so much better then trying to sleep, that is just stressful, better to walk 😂
Thanks! On the way down I met two photographers who had been higher up hoping to take pictures of the Aurora Borealis if it appeared but were coming down as it felt dangerous up there. I had no idea the Aurora was a possibility as it is extremely unusual this far south. It might have tempted me to stay. (I just checked out Sarek - looks amazing)
Great video Roger. Just as interesting as a fair weather one. Btw, did you mean storm arriving AGAIN? it never seems to end. And yes a>r$wls who left the tent. Keep the vids coming atb
It wasn't really the Xmids fault, it was handling the wind ok albeit it does stretch in when the wind hits on the long side. It does have it's faults though. I just didn't see the point of sitting it out all night. Had I known the wind was going to be that I would have stayed at home. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger

Thinking alike to be honest. The weather has been awful this year anyway! Thanks for watching.

Not a bad idea.
Lovely job Sir.. I gotta get myself over there. Looks stunning. Great job and well edited.
Thanks. The Brecon Beacons National Park is quite a place, Lots to go at.

There's a song there; you gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em 😉 I wonder how many tents were abandoned down by the Llyn!
Yeah, I wondered that. They would have been more sheltered down there, but you never know. Thanks for watching
Just discovered your channel, excellent stuff. Subscribed
Thanks, welcome to my small tribe! ATB, Roger

The 2 rivers join in Cefn coed
True, is that not part of Merthyr?
@@thewanderingforester yes 😊👍 where they join swam there many times when I was younger, also up both rivers, enjoyed your vid by the way😉👌👍
