I know this is an unpopular opinion but my friends and I really enjoy playing warhammer until one side is decimated we have a few different mission and narrative sets we play until one of us is wiped out or has to concede that we cannot possibly win just straight up head to head war is a good time and it makes our list building feel a lot different when you aren’t holding an objective for points but you are holding an artillery cannon for survival and damage output. Holy hell, you REALLY brought me back to my childhood when I got into 40k right around the millennium and many of these characters were pretty heavily promoted and central. I miss em!

Captain Tycho wore the mask because an ork Warboss had a rainbow tattooed on his face in the 2nd edition lore.

The space marine captain with the sniper on phobos armor is Telion. I mean, it is exactly the same, just primaris

I have most of the Vect model, the throne & him on he ship, but not the slaves. I think his ship also came with special Incubi wearing trench coats. I have two that came on the ship anyway. I inherited them the Vect assembly from my brother so I don’t know what the model looked like new. One fun thing about Vect was he could only be used in games of 2500 points or higher. I also converted my own Telion model, which I think captures most of his distinctiveness, including his gun & knee pads.

Captain Tycho was playable in games all the way into 9th Edition. Literally removed in 10th edition which sucks.

About 6 months ago, 3 months before the election, everything was flooded with politics. A constant stream of hate... from both sides. It was a daily chore to avoid the barrage of BS coming from any of it, and a bit of a mental health issue for me, the DM. I came to the table one day and announced "NO POLITICS! I am here to have a good time." (Even though some of my players opinions i agreed with) "It's just ugly, and it's poison that will kill my fun, and in turn, your fun. "The response was "sure, that's fine, or whatever. dude" I had already booted disruptive players over the years so they knew i was serious. Well it's been 6 months and not a political snipe, or barb in any way at my table. and for at least 5 hours a week, we have been having a blast. So for my group at least, I'm happy to say they chose fun and escape, over politics at the table. But honestly, i was a bit worried it wouldn't go over that well.

Vect had rules all the way up until 7th edition dark eldar codex when he got remove because there was no in print model for him.

Killing off the Forge World Hazard Suits and the Shas'O was criminal. I'm Bitter. Edit: T'au now have a grand total of 3 Named Characters (Shadowsun, Farsight, Darkstrider) after the 10th edition purge.

Gaunt's ghosts had a group of metal models. Ibram gaunt himself. Brin Milo, Colm Corbec, Tolin Dorden, and a tanith plasma trooper. Amusingly tolin dorden is a medic who refuses to use firearms yet the model has the chonkiest laspistol on it. Edit: and Hlaine Larkin

Weird thing with cassius is that the model has a combi flamer but for a short period he had a bolt pistol that went back to the combi flamer in 5th edition.

One of my favorite things in fiction is [real world culture]+[new setting for that culture]. In ASOIAF the wildlings are something like Celts in the Arctic Circle. In 40k the Black Templar are like Holy Roman Empire Space Marines. I like to think about what color schemes I can put on minis to achieve that look. Rn I’m considering Aztec World Eaters and wondering what faction I can paint to represent an East African civ (e.g. Mali Empire)

Tycho's mask comes from a battle report in White dwarf for 2nd edition where he was hit by an Andy Chambers ork weirdboy's power that paralised half his face so he wore the mask to hide his disfigurement.

For a time the Slave girls from Vect's kit were sold separately and stayed in circulation longer then the original model did.

Why couldn't GW let Abaddon have slain a few of these to help underline how badass he really is? Instead they let a mere Calgar both survive and almost kill Abaddon... *sigh*

I still have my metal chaplin Xavier, his model was really nice and still holds up today in my opinion. His Salamander skin cape was really nice and his weapon being Vulkan's hammer was realised very well.

While I'm more in table-top RPGs than wargaming, our hobbies have one more, very important upside - it lets you make friends as an adult. Especially if you're moving to another city or even a country. It's hardvto find new friends after the college. Our hobbies allows that easily.

It's not really a character but a generic HQ. The old cadian captain with a shotgun and a beer belly was a highlight for me. Also Colour Sergeant Krell is technically lost cause he died and no longer has rules but I think you can still buy his model.

Guys like tycho who actually died in the lore and therefore lost their model I kind of appreciate. One of the problems with this setting is no one important ever dies so there’s no stakes and it’s very Saturday morning cartoon

Ok, time to put my old grandpa nerd hat put on. Gather round children. Tycho wore the mask because in the 1st White Dwarf Battle report of 2nd ed Jervis (i think) went with Tycho as the name of his Leader. That model got fragged by an Ork Wierdboy. GW (Jervis and/or Andy) ran with that narative. They used the idea that he survived the Wierboy brain blast thingy but it left him with a partially fucked up face. His face being unmarked in death is i assume a reference to him now being at peace. Ignoring his soul is now being torn apart by daemons.... lol.

Thanks for talking about doomrider, he was one of my favorites. The thought of his head being in a big trophy room, possibly yelling lunatic things, is pretty funny.

Bring back my boy Asterion Moloc, he ain't dead yet! Bet they've still got his resin mold in the back of Forgeworld. His rules would be easy to put into 10th, he had a datasheet from 9th edition.

About Cpt. Tycho, I think I remember that his face was mutilated by Orks. Since the Blood Angels are all about esthetics, he chose to wear the mask and hated the Orks for it. I think he even had this in his rules, but that was 2nd edition 40k. Don’t know if my memory is correct here but that’s at least how I remember it. Don’t know why they chose to retcon this. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ralai and the XV9s were one of the best highlights of FW's Tau. Shame they got rid of them. XV9 > XV8

I still play WFB 7th edition and W40K 5th edition with all my "old" classic miniatures. They are worth a fortune. We joke about my armies are more expensive than pure gold 😂 The point is that we bought the games to use them. It is not like we HAVE to throw out the older rulebooks and army codex just because GW releases new. We can decide whether we want to use the new ones or just keep on playing the former editions. We are free to use what we think is fun to use. I love WFB 6th/7th edition and so do my friends and we have bought a lot of miniatures over the years back from 2002. That also goes for W40K. As far as we know then the AoS end of times etc. never happened either 🤣 No one stops use from having fun. GW might target the new generation of players and that is fine. In the meantime my Dwarf army let the hammer falls and my Ultramarines "firstborn" first company has zero clue about any Primaris marines as we are in W40K 5th edition where that shit never happened and never will. 😂

The first T'au model us really cool, the locked in head makes the suit and color scheme makes it look like a military prototype

Tycho was put in a dreadnaught. It was suggested you use a Death Company Dread but replace his power fists with 2 copies of Ghaz's power claw from his old metal version. Paint him gold and call it a day.

One I definitely miss is Nemesor Zhandrek. I have him and Obyron but it’s a shame they don’t have rules in the codex anymore. I always enjoyed paired named characters like that.

Chaplain Cassius was part of the Deathwatch, but the old metal model is from after he had completed his tour and rejoined the ultramarines. Still a classic model though!

Pour one out for The Decapitator - the Mandrake special character from 3rd edition. He never got a model, but he had such potential as a cool and mechanically interesting character. I loved him so much that i converted one up myself, and used him along side 27 mandrakes in my all-deep strike Dark Eldar army. It was so stupid, but so much fun. 😅
