Dale's Shovelhead Chopper Final Part 3!
Use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope on a running engine to pinpoint the origin of noises. Rocker shafts can be Shimmed @ assembly to eliminate chatter. The external plumbing on 81-82 engines was an attempt to scavenge oil from the lifter blocks using a vacuum from the piston on up-stroke. In 83 they went back to the prior design.
Thanks for your opinion Kurt! Unfortunately engine is not in “assembly” condition to shim rockers. As for the external plumbing, when I removed pipes to the barrels and turned the engine over the hoses had positive oil pressure coming out of the lifters.
Yes, the rocker Shafts should have been Shimmed during assembly. Like i said - The hoses evacuate oil from the lifter blocks into the case. They do not use the normal route to drain through the cam cover. The idea was to stop leakage at the bottom of the pushrods caused by puddling due to slow return.
Also my m8 softail 2018 makes a ton of valvetrain noise , so many posts on the internet "what is this loud noise", m8 earning the name of sewing machine, but its so noisy with stock exhaust haha.
Hahaha yeah exactly. If your oil looks good every service it will be fine
i have an 81 shovel motor in my chopper, specifically 1981 fltc based on the vin... i dont know for certain but ive seen several "original" models that have this oil setup from cylinder to lifter blocks. its unusual for sure, i guess it cant hurt??? always funny to see another one in the wild
btw love your videos, thanks for making these. even after building a few bikes a few times its fun to watch these and learn more
Thanks very much! Much appreciated the view and the comments
Top video,nice shovel.
Glad you enjoyed it
great vid mate, thanks for sharing
Thank you for the views and comment!
Great vlog , that diagnosis for top end noise was great , I wouldn't have thought to check the wheels on the lifters so thoroughly , a very big thanks for the future ! , ps now you can sleep well knowing that hundreds of old Harley owners have got lifters failure anxiety forever , I've got go lie down now 😝👍✌
Hahaha they fail quite often so it’s very important to check them! Thanks for the support
I tell, my mates about SUPER PHIL.
Hahaha thanks Glen
Hey Phil, thanks for the comments about the Gong. The roads here are pretty bloody good! Saw the bike at the Bulli show, looked mint.
Yeah mate can’t wait to come back down there next year for the show and do it all again
Very interesting video mate !! Super usefull thanks ! What material is the tube made off ? Chrome Molly steel ? Thanks a lot
Nah mate just regular carbon steel. Frames were never molly from factory too expensive.
I run a 24/49 and mine rips on the freeway no issues at all. I use 24/49 or 24/51 on all my bikes
Yeah always sounds like it’s revving higher on the highway because of the upsweep pipes in your ear hahah
@@PhilsWorks haha I like to stay around 3500-4000 on freeway or in town so I can grab throttle And go If I need to dip.
Vary formative my friend
Thanks vEry much mate!
I meant informative but you got the gist love your channel I've got shovelheads and evo's love these evo's
Nice bike, brother !!! I'm digging it.
Right on!
Most underrated chopper RUclipsr, thanks for always sharing your knowledge with us phil, you’re a G
I appreciate that! Comments and likes push my videos to a wider audience so thanks!
Excellent workmanship. Retired steel fabricator, i appreciate the amount of detail and work you put into the frame. Glad to see the frame was brought back .
Thank you mate! Would hate to see a frame like this go to waste!
Sometimes my shovel sumps and sometimes it doesn’t. But I’m always paranoid and put a pan under it if I haven’t fired it up in a while
Yeah you must need to replace the ball. Must be worn.
@@PhilsWorks I had no idea about that ball. I just thought it was something old Harley’s did haha. Thanks for the video man, I’ve watched every one. You are a wealth of knowledge. Cheers!
That bike is a scetchy rat, just the way I like em 🤘
Many engines come painted black from the factory.
The screen is full of debris because the engine is trashed !
Screen was full because the engine sat collecting dust for many years!
The aluminum oil pump was not installed on a big twin until 1968. All Flatheads, Knucks & Pans were cast iron.
They still have the same spring and ball in early cast iron pumps 👍🏻
Put some acorn nuts over the bolts on trannie & get some S/S button head bolts for rear master the rid brackets for pegs are cool cause ya made um not off shelf again great 3 videos mate from U.S.👌👍🤙✌️
Thank you!
Been putting this off on my 56 pan. Another awesome video man.
Awesome mate! Hopefully you do it now hahah
I learned a trick yrs ago when ya cut a bolt or all thread put a nut on bolt or what ever after ya cut bolt ta length or cut head off take nut off it takes bur off threads so it will thread nice not cross thread 👌👍🤙✌️
Yes that is a good little trick!
Nice bike
Thanks ✌️
Great never knew about the pushrod, have used an old ball bearing with a drift, thanks for sharing Phil, super.
Yes my old buddy has an oil pump ball brazed to a rod as well. Few different ways but all the same outcome!
very well filmed and thoroughly explained. thanks for another great how to video
Thanks for the support!
congratulations on not making all the jokes you could have made.😂 great tips as always 👍
Yeah look had nut sacks on my mind the whole time
Yep the simplest way is often the best 👍🇬🇧
Too right!
Nice bike. South Carolina, states, here. Good video.
Thanks for the support!
Thanks phil , my 86 evo is sumping , much apreciated tip 🙊🤞👍✌️, ps, i was thinking of putting a small manual cut off on the in line oil line 😂
Do not do it 😂 one day you’ll forget it and blow the thing up. Fix it the right way!
That bike is incredible man, and I love the color...
Thank you!
Saw you lads out Glasshouse the other day. Was squealing like a little girl 😎
Oh you should have run us off the road or something 😂😂😂
I have two projects im working on, both with rattle can black engines. Pain in the ass getting it cleaned off. Great videos. Thanks.
How annoying is it!!
ruclips.net/video/-agcEpTEhck/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Oil filter goes infront of front cylinder on lower casing on TC they come on the motor their casted on lower casing EVO'S weren't??
Early Evo’s don’t have that. Late ones do
Ben langit sing mikirke dusonu
This is great for new guy love ur language so refreshing in this politically correct world like wide glide front end in US we call um wide glide not FL but you get point across you got cool toys (Lathge) like the fish mouth hole saw jig ya made cool👌👍✌️
Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated
I like ur channel I got lotta catching up on ur videos 👌👍✌️
Get watching!
@@PhilsWorks 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In US we call that cut a "Fish Mouth " mate 😉😁
AAAHHH! I wish this were available 8 months ago when I was wiring my Panhead. Similar to this one, but I'm running fat bob tanks with a stock ignition key and dashboard. I like that small battery much better than the Yuasa I've got in mine. Can you provide more details about it? Also, since I'm running a stock dash, I have a generator light. How would you wire that? I ran a wire straight from the generator to the light bulb and it lights up when the bike is running, as opposed to being on when the bike is NOT running and turning off when the bike IS running. Love all your videos. I've learned a lot watching them.
Thank you mate! You’ll just have to look up a stock wiring diagram. It will show you how to wiring up the gen light
@@PhilsWorks Yeah, I did that. The manual shows the wiring for the complete 6v system, including all the extra blocks and crap that I don't have. I have a "Cycle Electrics" 12 V conversion generator and regulator combination. I couldn't find any simple diagram for that setup. I'll keep looking, though. Thanks.
What do you run for a wheel setup? 21' front and 19' rear?
On this bike yes
Sweet wiring couldnt be any simpler, one could even be fried to figure that one out, thanks Phil you are a great teacher.
Yeah doesn’t get much easier aye!
Phil; Your a Legend mate, Excellent Vid: Great Job Mate 👍✊😎
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job
Cheers!
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
good guide how to wire, especially that your switching ground via the switch / relay is smart, in order to have as less 12V hot cables flying arround . 2 questions here: what is the maximum Ampere load of the circuit breaker (30A as the relays?), and if so, what thickness of cables are you using? if you use just one 30A circuit breaker, then each cable should be 4-6 square mm, or won't that be necessary? Nevertheless, thanks for the great upload.
I usually run a smaller CB than relay just so if you do get a short the relay doesn’t see more amps than it can hold. As for amps and cables ect just have to do some research and see what the items your powering will draw
On shovel now , still there from many years made up a mount for a small car battery on left side of motor opposite to carb , kick starting the twin fire original ignition in NT heat got old , got a dyna 2000i electronic ignition now that from factory is set for electric start . . if send the module can you reset it to kick start , have kick started it current mode due to excitement but would prefer an easier life , they sell the simple kit to do self the re program of the ignition , but yeah
Points ignitions only haha
Sissy bar reminded of the second Mad Max movie
Hi, using earth wires for the switch was a new one to me What a crackin video, dead simply 👍🇬🇧
Yeah earth makes it a bit easier and safer!
Hell yeah lad been waiting for this. Cheers
Thanks mate!
Awesome job and Thank you for walking us threw the Wiring. great help on that.
