2000's Style Harley Davidson Shovelhead Chopper
Just completed 1500ml mark on my SH93 with M5 Mag. Never easy to start, sometimes can be 25-30 kicks and sometimes its 2. Whenever I think I got it, the sequence changes ahhh! Im hoping I win the battle eventually. Great videos, keep em coming Phil
Whats ya oil smell like?.
Phil, in high comp car motors they fit reduction geared starter motors. The kicker gears in Harleys are, I guess, the same ratio as stock compression H-D motors. So, has anyone made a kicker gear set with a reduction ratio so that it is not only easier to kick over a high-comp motor, but also stock comp motors. If that makes sense?
(or a longer kicker lever?)
My 1948 pan head STD engine evo crank which had gm stamp on it had that much comp I couldn't even kick over belt drive so $3500 later teck cycle electric start kit for 1978 shovelhead transmission which it has.and I have a Howard 12 rotary hoe cool place you live Phil
Twin plug head static time the TDC mark ATDC about 5 degree retard. Dynamic at 2k revs approx 25 degree Advance. Be a shame to change it back, Looks wild.
That was a Awesome video 👍
Arrhh...memories of firing up my old shovel when it hadn't been started for awhile - marking its spot on the cement. That beast sounds the business. Great video allround.
Functionality reigns
Pressure on my do dads, story of my life!
Great looking bike though!
AKA COW PIE, (TURBAN TOP)😊😊😁😁😂😂🤣🤣
Hahahah turban top. I haven’t heard that one
So how much advance did you put in it or did you leave it alone
Man I just fiddled with it till it liked the imput
I absolutely love your videos. You get straight to the point no over explaining. I know you’re over seas but where do you source your DOM tubing? And where did you get that full round bending die for your manual bender?
I made my bending die mate. I wasn’t paying the crazy prices they wanted for one
good description of the settings on your welder but what filler rod did you use ? and your preference of electrode ? cases came out really well after the welding
Lost count in how many cases i cases i have fixed in 32 years
Spill some of your tips and tricks then!
SISSY BAR SHOULD ALWAYS BE IN the SAME LINE (ANGLE) as FRONT FORKS
No wayyyyyyy. Looks so goofy when they lean back to far. Plus you can’t lean back on them
@@PhilsWorks WRONG ! DEPENDS ON the RAKE, STOCK RAKE NO ISSUES. U NEED TO TALK TO the TOP CHOPPER BUILDERS. AESTHETIC'S ALWAYS WINS ! LOOK UP WORD, IF NOT FAMILIAR WITH ENGLISH VOCABULARY
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT INSTEAD OF PURCHASING THE SERVICE MANUAL OR LOOK UP THAT INFORMATION ONLINE YOU TORE OFF THE ROCKER BOXES, REMOVED THE LIFTERS AND LIFTER BLOCKS ONLY TO PHONE A FRIEND WHO TOLD YOU WHAT THE MANUAL SAYS REGARDING OIL LINE ROUTING???!! C’MON MAN 😂😂😂 AT LEAST YOU OWNED IT AT THE END IF THE VIDEO SAYING YOU MADE THE MISTAKE. POINTS FOR THAT MATE. AS FAR AS THE BLACK PAINT, THATS COMMON PRACTICE WITH HARLEYS AND ESPECIALLY CHOPPERS. PAINT THE CYLINDER AND THE HEAD OR ONE. LOOKS COOL AND SOME BRUSHED ALUMINUM AND CHROME.
Sounds like I’ll just send all work to you from now on! You know it all!
Do the relays have a resistor for voltage spike protection?
They do not mate, they only disconnect when they get a current draw over their specification
No need for a mechanical voltage regulator? If so why not?
This is a 12v charging system with a bolt on regular on the back of the Gen. All works completed and just need a wire to the battery.
great job
Is this your weld on piece I'm using? Was great material and worked a treat!
@@PhilsWorks yes. we make them. they work great. Thanks for making the video
Great work, and I love that you got in-depth with the weld settings. Where is Carl’s located now? A google search shows that they’re permanently closed. Wondering what other repair sections they offer… Happy New Year!!
Carl's Cycle Supply is in South Dakota, USA. They specialize in restoring early Harley Davidsons and sourcing/producing replica parts. They work mostly with Knucklehead, Panhead, and Flathead motors. They may be shut down for the holidays but I've seen nothing to indicate that they are closed. They have sites on all the media platforms. They posted a 36' El on their RUclips channel 5 days ago. Hope this helps.
@ it does, thanks so much!!
@@jerrylong381I was searching for Carl’s Speed Shop!! My bad…
Yeah look my bad too. I messed that up!
@@PhilsWorks no worries, still a ton of great information. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Nice job, If it was a frequent enough repair you may do well to use an old generator housing or make something similar to strap in the piece to be welded for taking in position?. But i know you know that, obviously not a regular job. But now people know you do it?, who knows eh?.
Yeah look, not something I want to do heaps of. This was a job for a buddy of mine so I helped him out.
Awesome video again cheers Phil 👍
Thanks for the support and the comment!
I like the trick with the emery cloth to leave a little casting look.
Works a treat!
Another great video,, 😁🇨🇦
Thanks for the support mate!
@ what happened to the part Shovel part Pan engine build,, 😁🇨🇦
Gday Phil , even though I’m not into bike building anymore I still find this very interesting. Love how you explain the process 👍🏾🇦🇺
Thanks for the support!
Did you use propane to warm up? I think this would bring unwanted dirt to the welding area.... great video, thanks
Yes used just regular old gas. Burns super clean. Maybe you are thinking about oxy acetylene?
Fuckin love the in depth videos you’ve been doing lately. I love how informative they are and how you’re teaching more specialty things that most people doing learning about choppers don’t even think about. Keep up the good work man I look forward to tuning into every video.
Thank you for the positive comment mate! Means a lot!
Does your tig torch identify as mig gun, that thing is FN huge!
hahah man. You might have not heard me ranting about Fronius in a pervious video. In Aus their consumables are next to impossible to find and their range for accessories is shit house. Naturally they aren't interchangeable with standard accessories so I had to retrofit a standard head to the Fronius hand piece to make it happen. Unfortunately ended up a bit bigger but at least now a gas cup only cost me $3 instead of $16 and I can buy them at my local hardware instead of online and waiting a week to get them
“Nothing worse than a strap on that doesn’t fit” 😂 best line of the year and you saved it for the last day! Gold!
Karen vids make strap ons like tears in the rain . . won't get into the gay bar
I was wondering if anyone picked up on that little easer egg!
@@PhilsWorks Was it you petty deleting my innocent pearls of wisdom about cool tech Henbrow torches or is this needletube death cult censor 2030 animal farm 1984
Yeah well . . to each their own
Old Henbrow oxy acetylene welding was essentially tig welding , old race car frames etc . . piston rings snapped to size best for steel to steel Henbrow . . very interesting tech as the flame non oxidizing
Have one of those torches , they can cut around 10mm plate & use miniscule amounts of gas & so the whole thing was brushed under the carpet no surprise there
Another great video Phil, thanks for posting!
Thanks for the support toad!
Fantastic as always! If you want to share some TIG settings that would be great. Amp plug, amp hot and amp fill. And do you run with pulse? Looking forward to the new series! Br Erik from Sweden.

Thanks mate!
It's the squeaky welding helmet for me.
Imagine how loud it is in my ear 😂
you're the man Phil
Hahahaha trying my best
Very good video, answers many of my questions. You are really talented and great at explaining! You don't think it's necessary that the bottom drive side tube kicks out to allow for ample chain clearance? Is it excessive work? Br. Erik
Thanks for the comment! Yes a stock frame had a joggle in the left bottom leg for chain clearance. But I’m my experience it’s not required if your wheel is centre of the axle plates. I have a buddy that makes them but just makes the frames more expensive
@ Thank you very much! Looking forward to the welding video ✌️
Love watching all your work but the frame fab is my favorite
Thank you for the comment! Glad to hear this! I have plenty coming up
Great video. Well explained. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
excellent, thank you for your knowledge
Cheers mate! Glad you’re enjoying the videos.
What thickness is the 1” tubing on the shovel/ pan frames?
I believe it’s in the 3mm range
@@PhilsWorksthank you for responding!
Nice 🎉
Cheers mate! Glad you like it.
Annealing
Hardening steel
That lapping trick is waste of time it will lump Everytime it sits either warm it up once a month in winter to fill the bag or take plugs out in spring roll it over dozen times then fire it saves on breather oil soaking
Like I tell my customers. Put a nice clean pan under it when you start it. Catch the oil and put it straight back in the oilbag haha
Hey Phil! Hello from Missouri, USA Nice video. How critical is point gap to timing. I was told years ago that for every .001" the point gap is off, the timing changes by 3°. While I can visualise how that could be, I've always just set my points as close as possible before I static time it. That has always worked good enough for me. But I don't tune for max performance either. Just curious what your thoughts are. Cheers
Hey mate, I’ve always set my points to 18tho before setting the timing. (Close enough is good enough on these old things haha)
Very informative video! Never heard of this trick before. Watching from southern Indiana!
Cheers mate, glad you found it useful!
