We call that filter screen in the USA "Witch's Hat". I was lucky over 30 years ago, a grey beard biker taught me about trouble shooting that item first before anything else. He also said always run an oil pressure gage & oil filter regardless of uncool it looks on your chop. He always said to pay attention to detail & never trust any part you buy from any manufacture to be correct. Always check or inspect for proper fit, size, dirt, metal chips, burrs, pieces of foreign material that doesn't belong. I had bought a set of adjustable push rods from a reputable co. After inspecting them, one of them was not drilled through the center oil hole. Great video. I am still learning from these vids. Wish we had them in the day.
Very wise man! Trust nothing! Well, I agree you should have an oil pressure gauge and filter on everything! I am also a sucker for punishment. Out here Learning the hard way when I already know better haha.
A couple of things come to mind, first it’s good to see someone from Australia that is more into the old school Harley’s than the “other” widely known Aussie that although ride the shit out of his bike through places I’d never go, seems to simply throw money at the HD dealer to fix the issues he creates or buying the latest and greatest bike on the floor. Secondly, and I don’t know why this surprises me, it still shocks me how visually similar Australia and the US are. Been to Europe and Africa, you know you’re in a different country just by looking at the landscape. But Australia, looks very similar to much of America, minus a lot of billboards. Keep it up, love your videos.
An excellent really appreciate your thoroughness in breaking down the thinking behind, where to start, what to look for, how to troubleshoot and fix this whole way thru Very well explained, filmed. I'd love to see and separate video on the installation process of that after market pan filter showing the mountings, fittings, and oil routing hose layout for a custom chopper. Thank you!
Hi Phil, watched some of your videos, very good and informative. can I pick your brain please? I have a 94 road king. I had one of the lifters bearings shit itself. I replaced all the lifters and the camshaft. still running the standard pushrods. issue I have is the oil is not getting from the oil tank to the engine? I have tried numerous ways of priming the engine. with the oil tank under the gearbox, gravity does not work? any suggestions please? cheers Troy.
Never noticed before that evo motor has not got a standard filter fitted, I like the look of the old Pan style ones and was thinking about running one, but you say they leak all the time? they do a newer version that looks similar but uses the screw in type filters, i may run that, great content again Phil, i look forward to when you release a video.. 👍
Yes there is a newer style one that looks to be designed better. But it’s a lot more bulky than the old skinner style like this one. Personally the old style ones are that cheap repop you might as well get one and do a bit of wrestling to make it seal. This one hasn’t leaked yet!
All evo motors came with an oil filter either up front on 92 and later or under the transmission on early evos. I wouldnt buy a motor that was being run without a filter. Throwing that motor back together without getting inside and cleaning all the debris is risky@kurtfoulke5130
@@PhilsWorks Yes it looked familiar.. I'm around Sunny Coast.. I'm rebuilding my Shovel at the moment.. I've found plenty of work done on it and most of it dodgy.. That's why your vids are very Handy... Cheers.
@PhilsWorks haha I have.i was on sunny coast ,now about an 1hr inland of BUNDY. Problem is I live in the bush and have to cross small creek crossings most days. She more practical then pretty. What area are you located? Would be good to drop by sometime.. .
Its likely that the wanka you bought it from, replaced the oilpump not knowing that it only needed the screen cleaned, so well done on you! Its nice to know all the bits your working on eh?😂😂😂 Well done.
Shit 😂,I'm in the shed with rattle can in my hand about to paint engine.whatch this vid for evo inspiration, now I need to find a hammer.😂 It's an s&s evo and was bare ,looked good but takes a lot to keep it looking good.also was thinking if it was Black , people wouldn't notice it's a s&s stroker. Now I don't know what to do.... hammer time
Made me laugh with that engine spray painting vent. Been losing my mind lately because my current project has poorly painted engine end its a huge pain in the ass.
@@PhilsWorks hi mate I didnt know you owned the bike so sorry about the crazy bit, I have built many custom Harleys and clones and even gone through the registration engineering work in NSW and as u tube vids influence people I was merely pointing out the hazards and legalities and insurance issues of riding what they consider to be a defective motor vehicle, I like your work and knowledge on the Howard engines, and I have never ridden a desk for a living lol, I'm 67 and a fitter machinist and still have projects going, currently I'm doing up a Condor kit car from the late 70"s its on Facebook, I can handle the knocking but never a desk job, keep up the good work and vids!
if want this bike good you need take off and fight to trash this old ugly exhaus pipes, and handlebar change normal.take off risers.totally NOT need ricers and high handlebar.
Please speak clearly. And slower, Why u beating the bike with your gauge .your Ricker tubes wouldn't matter with the oil pressure. They just transfer oil from the rocker box .

Gday Troy, thats a little late for me and out of my wheel house. I have heard of this issue before though. I would do some form surfing if I was you
I run a 24/49 and mine rips on the freeway no issues at all. I use 24/49 or 24/51 on all my bikes
Yeah always sounds like it’s revving higher on the highway because of the upsweep pipes in your ear hahah
@@PhilsWorks haha I like to stay around 3500-4000 on freeway or in town so I can grab throttle
And go If I need to dip.

Most Evos have a filter, this is a very early one.
Basically a shovel lower end.

Good, well explained video. Which part of Australia was that ride? Beautiful countryside!
Im between Brisbane City and Sunshine coast

I had to use copper crush washers on my after market pan oil filter
Hahaha yeah iv don’t a full reseal and user O-rings before
Much better without the black on it , nice bike ..also wondering , would the legnth of pressure gauge line give a false reading ? .
The line can be a mile long! Pressure is pressure!
Nice big thanks from Sweden ❤
Thanks for the support
Oil filter goes infront of front cylinder on lower casing on TC they come on the motor their casted on lower casing EVO'S weren't??
Early Evo’s don’t have that. Late ones do
What can you do to stop the alloy getting that white powdery corrosion?
Move away from the coast haha

How about bright green. Almost bought it just to clean it off.
Please, let’s clean up these spray painted engines one at a time

100% I knew there would be something going on with the aftermarket pump. Turns out it was an easy fix! Sometimes you win! Sometimes you lose
Many engines come painted black from the factory.
Great channel, I really enjoyed it.
You're pretty good around the shop but, you are riding on the wrong side of the road !
I’ll do a video riding on the other side of the road and see how long I last 👍🏻
@@PhilsWorkswish you would
A mate of mine painted his engine black because he cbf polishing it 😅
Get him to contact me, I’ll send him a hammer

My comments are full of “eh” it’s caught on!
Can't say enough of about your work, just do it right without all the BS fluff and drama.
Cheers!
The screen is full of debris because the engine is trashed !
Screen was full because the engine sat collecting dust for many years!
@@PhilsWorksno way
That bike is a scetchy rat, just the way I like em 🤘
time 32:58 handlebar sure NOT need risers too high have, stupid need change this and make normal clutch/gear change system and front brake.
Boring!

Mannnn takes so long to fix it aye. Stop spray painting aluminum engines. Steel Jugs, Iron heads yeah sure. But something that doesn't rust? FKN WHY?!
Not everyone cam afford powdercoating.
powder coating is cheap compared to say Chrome
no front brake, no speedo, not legal and a crazy owner.
What are you the cops? Go back to your desk job!
