  • The dreaded low oil pressure light and a brief example of steps to troubleshoot it. A wide range of possibilities exist for what could cause the light to shine, and I'll show you the steps I took to diagnose the issue on my Harley. I hope this helps some of you out there wondering what could be wrong with your bike.
    Motorcycle: 2007 Harley-Davidson Sportster Nightster 1200
    The low oil pressure light illuminated while I was blasting down the highway, but went away as soon as I slowed down. Turns out it would only come on under heavy load when the engine was hot (thinner oil). I put the bike into temporary retirement while I troubleshat the issue...

    Same year as my Sportster 1200 custom and will keep this in my library. The video helped me locate where the oil hose goes into that fitting with clamp so thanks 👍🏼 sorry this happened to you for I know you miss riding, good luck with your repair and I subbed on. The Texas heat is approaching and I'm not looking forward to it 😎

    You removed the cam cover without first removing the lower rocker box to relieve the pressure on the cam gears before removing them. This is the reason you got the cam gear bushings damaged. The pieces of metal you have there come from the oil pump drive gear which as i can see in the video has some teeth damaged. This is a common problem.

      True, to disassemble it properly I should have removed pressure off the cam gears first. But the damage was there beforehand, as I saw right when the cam cover was taken off.

      @@thomasdowd2183 what spyridon said 100% and make sure you're at top dead center of the compression stroke before you remove AND install each rocker box assembly, also put a bronze oil pump drive gear in when you go to reinstall your cams

      Spyridon Moraitis you’re right that the oil pump drive gear does look chewed up. When they get chewed up the gears lose contact with the oil pump which of course ends up with the pump not pumping. I put a bronze pump drive gear in my 1275 Hammer Performance powered Sportster.

    Good day Thomas . I’m curious what the engine sounded like going down the road. Did it clatter or make noise ?

    • @thomasdowd2183
      @thomasdowd2183  4 года назад +2

      Yeah it definitely had some clatter to it. Sounded like it was mostly coming from the head, but didn't see any evidence of damage up there. I've heard the first audible sign of low oil pressure on these engines is a noisy head. Have you had a similar problem?

      This is exactly what my old mans engine sounds like atm, I’ve currently got the rocker covers off and now I know to dig deeper, if it is the issue you’ve got my subscription lol

      That sucks man. Tough to say. Has the engine been taken apart before? Is the oil pressure light coming on?

      I bought mine off a wrecked 2011 Nightster that I found on Craigslist in Dallas. Paid $850 for the engine. It's a really nice engine too. Deals like that are very hard to find though.

      I've bought a '91 and '99, both full bikes for $1100 this year on Facebook. 91 has a title but 99 is a salvage title from a wheel being bent and dirby cover hole from getting backed into. Deals are always out there man. And a neighbor wants the 99 1200 engine and offered $800 cash but I can't bring myself to do it. I'ma Harley hoarder.
