    My favorite part about the old show to do with Jackie was when Howard would call him out for trying to sell all his junk to the fans and especially hilarious was the one time he kept forcing in the name of a hotel into the conversation on the air and it turned out he was getting a deal with them for mentioning their name and was exposed on the show. I was just listening to an old Stern show and they said the same thing Tom just said. Jackie had a history of haggling for more money. Stern had always interceded for him with the brass - but was over it. During that last go around - Jackie was offered a VERY generous multi year contract - but held out for another 50k a year. Howard and Tom begged him to stop the games and sign - then they gave him a deadline or he would be out. The deadline passed - he didnt sign and he was out. Months later he confessed that he didnt think he'd really be let go. He miscalculated. Gary said that for what they would have paid Jackie they were able to hire 6 people and have money left over.

    • @whiteroses9485
      @whiteroses9485 3 года назад

      Exactly. It bugs me when it's always described as Jackie leaving the show when TECHNICALLY, he was fired. The second he admitted to making multiple contacts to take the original deal, his "I left to get my life together" argument is destroyed. He had no intention of leaving. He did yet another work stoppage solely to get more money. And additional attention. Notice me, notice me. I don't fully blame Jackie though. He did several walk outs prior and Howard always went into his own pocket at the last minute to "save" him. Howard & mgmt created the Jackie monster. It's so ironic that Jackie resents Howard so much, when Howard was the only reason he remained there so long. No other workplace on the planet would put up with Jackie's constant horseshit. Not just the salary stuff, but all the other crap he pulled. Jackie never had a real job so he doesn't get how the real world works. Jackie wanted the job duties/responsibility level of a worker while making the salary of a partner. For all Jackie's bragging about his education and how smart he is, ultimately he's a mess. He'll never understand that the main reason Howard kept him around wasn't his comedy, it was because people love watching a mess in action.

      I've thought about this over the years. But all we have are public statements made by most of the players. None of us were there or know these people. I buy it all. He was difficult to negotiate. And he clearly had life problems - divorce, alcohol abuse, etc. And he seems to have cleared them up. I met him in a club (where he was not performing) some years ago and he was very gracious and polite to me. He's a really great joke teller, even if he didn't write all the jokes. I've seen him in a club where he killed. I'm sure he could've worked more clubs if he wanted to, but maybe he didn't have to. Only the players really know. Once Howard actually retires and the NDAs expire, you'll probably hear more fleshed out stories.

    Your interviews with the old Stern crew are the best and I always fully enjoy them. It's strange that Jackie would say this vicious stuff about Robin at this stage of the game. Jackie's always been bitter but recently he's been especially cruel and mean. This Robin stuff is a prime example. I'm guessing this comes from the fact that none of the Stern people agreed to participate in Jackie's documentary, or have him on to promote it. It is pretty fucked, especially since it's likely that the only reason the thing got made was the producers' expectation that Stern would be involved and/or promote it on Sirius. Howard himself was never funny after Jackie quit. He fed him all of his funny quips. From there it was Howard reacting to Artie's stories and Artie's drama but not a single funny word left Howard's mouth

    sad...jackie has this need to try to make himself seem like the elder statesman of comedy. he never hit it big or got the respect of the comedy world, and it's clear that that eats him alive, so he does things like this to try to create his own legacy.

    Jackie was always so sensitive about Howard not praising his stand up. I mean he admits here he’s a hack who didn’t write any of the jokes, why would anyone care about his shallow/stolen act?

    I wish Jackie would stop pretending to not know about the show after he left, pretending to not know peoples names and stuff, it just really is lame
