Tim Saebean had the most valuable comment when he asked what was the “value add” for the format change after the format change during Sterns second Sirius contract. The short answer is that for the fans of the radio show, there was no value add. The theoretical value add was to make Howard more palatable for other projects outside of the radio show. Stern treated the show like a backup gig as he desperately tried to get into and stay in broadcast television media as an “interviewer” and realty host. Sadly for Stern, that dream failed when he was dumped from AGT after 2015 and his star power has been on the decline since.

What’s crazy (well maybe not that crazy when you think about it), is that Stern doesn’t have an on-line repository for his old shows. In 2020, the last year I subscribed, even the “old” shows on 101 weren’t old. Just repeats of the post-Artie, mostly unfunny, satellite years. I’d love to be able to click on a show from 1988-onward and listen to it. But, even more sadly, I’ve read Howard is going to destroy the official recordings of his old shows when he retires or dies. He probably won’t destroy most of the last 14 years, after he became an “interviewer “, because I think the narcissist in him believes that’s what he’ll be remembered for. Anything pre-2010 will probably cease to exist in an official form. I’m sure nearly all of his shows exist on bootleg tapes, but he and his estate will sue to keep them off the web anywhere.

It boggles my mind what happened to the show. At the very least, Howie should have renamed the show if he wanted to be a celebrity interviewer. That way, the old show could have ended properly, and his new show could have a new identity. Instead, he screwed his staff, his fans, and even himself. I guess he's rich enough not to care. I bet Imus is giggling in the Great Beyond.

Stern mistimed the end of his career badly. 1) He tried to break into mainstream TV at the same time that medium was on the decline; 2) he infamously failed to recognize the power of podcasting/streaming and stuck with satellite radio-relegating his show to a dwindling and aging audience; 3) He changed the winning comedy format of his show to an interview format for no other reason than #1 above; 4) he became political at a time when politics is more divisive than ever, alienating a lot of his fans; 5) he both stuck around too long and takes so much time off to the point that he’s been semi-retired for years. He even moved to Florida. People don’t miss you when you’re halfway out the door for years. 6) personal opinion, I truly believe the only reason he’s still semi-working is if had retired in 2021, thanks to both the national and his own personal virus insanity, his dream retirement show would have been an utter disappointment. He will get a decent send-off. I’m tempted to renew my 4-year-can Ellen subscription to listen in, but I probably won’t because I’m pretty sure everything before 2011 will go unmentioned.

I enjoyed that wrap up show back in it's heyday., maybe moreso than the show on some days. I'll never forget Wheels calling asking HS what the rationale was for the change in direction, and HS blew him off. That is the earliest I can recall the end was coming for me and I started listening in the 80s.

@@francismoritz1132 And you never heard from wheels again. The WRS was great when there was something to react to. Unfortunately, it became booey and Hein’s talk show where they ended up explains how the show “evolved”. Is Hein even still with the show? I haven’t listened in over 4 years.

I am probably commenting too much on this thread. But I think something needs to be said. Yes it was Howard’s decision to change his show. And yes, that was an absolutely horrible decision for his fans. But, let’s not forget what the catalyst for this was. It was Artie’s suicide attempt. Artie did not “leave” the show. He tried to kill himself, and put Howard Stern in a horrible position to rehire a junkie, and put all of the pressures on him that led to the suicide attempt in the first place, or replace him and make it clear that he was fired for trying to kill himself, which is a horrible look. 15 years down the road, I have to say Howard made the right decision by not rehiring Artie. By all accounts, Artie never really stopped using. Even on the HBO show “Crashing , I read that he was still on drugs and so unreliable that they had to pivot to show away from his character on the show. As much as I love Artie, as much as I think his time on the show was amazing (until 2009 when he was clearly having problems), I blame a lot of the change on the show on Artie. I think his suicide attempt had a real impact on Howard, and Stern’s decision to never bring anybody into “the fold “ again. For the record, I think that was absolutely the wrong decision, and his show sucks as a result. It wasn’t the only reason, It may not have been the primary reason for the show changing into what it has become, but it started there. I’ve given up on Artie making any sort of comeback, and his face is so off putting since he destroyed his nose he’s hard to watch.
