Pappy Van Winkle 12yr... Is it worth the HYPE?

  • Today we take a sample of Pappy Van WInkle Family Reserve 12yr and test it to see if it is worth the hype it receives. We test it against Old Fitzgerald 8yr BIB, Weller 12, Poor Man's Pappy, and Maker's Mark 101. We try to decide how Pappy fairs against similar competitors and is it worth buying into the hype.

Great side by side! I’m shocked at the result! Sounds like I need to mix up some poor man’s Pappy. Also kudos to the whiskey community! Very generous sending those samples and bottles!!!
I’ve been fortunate enough to try friends’ bottles of Lot B (12) and Pappy 20. On those tiny tastes I actually preferred the 12. Maybe it was just after I looked at the disparity between their respective secondary “value” but still. I thought the Lot B was WAY better than standard W12. Sounds like I need to cherish that bottle of Fitz 8 I waited five hours for! I’ve regretted overpaying for things but I’ve never regretted putting in the time to get something I’ll enjoy for a year or more. Thanks for putting that lineup together!

Such a great video. It’s amazing to me the reverence and respect that the Pappy brand gets just because of the availability. I just popped a Knob Creek 15 year and I honestly feel like it’s the best bourbon I’ve ever had. “Find a bottle you love”….I think I just did

Great review! I've had MM 101, Weller SR and Weller Antique 107, and for me the Antique is so much better. Just very hard to find in SC at retail, the only 2 bottles I've found this year were both priced at over $100, and I refuse to pay that much for a bottle whose MSRP is $49

I disagree David , I think your palate is just fine. Had a buddy that won a Pappy 12 in a lottery. We were both very excited. Got it back to his place , crack it open , take that first sip and ............. I remember my first response. " Maybe it needs to open up ? " So we let it sit for 30 minutes open in the glass. It was only marginally better then. Granted , this is the only pappy I have ever had , but I would take Antique 107 , Maker's 46 Cask Strength and also Maker's 101 over it personally. And that's just the wheaters I would rather have ! It just isn't that special of a bottle. That experience really changed how I viewed rare/allocated bourbons.

I was lucky a while back and my favorite bar had a bottle of VanWinkle 10, 12, and George T Stagg. I tried all three as they were only $20 - $25 a pour. They also had a barrel pick of OWA. Of the four, their barrel pick of OWA blew away the Van Winkle bottles. Easily! But that George T Stagg was AMAZING! Hands down the best bourbon I've ever had. I would gladly pay $200 a bottle for it. The two Van Winkles I bought would have a hard time, and probably fail to be a good bottle of Rare Breed for me. Save your money folks! There are lots of good bottles on the shelves out there. But if you ever get a chance to try GTS, DO IT!!!! That one is worth the hype.

Great watch. I did some research online after acquiring a 107 & Weller 12 and was told that Poor Man's Pappy was a 40/60 blend, 40%12 & 60% 107. I'll have to try a 50/50 and see if it's any better. On a side note, I have tried Pappy 12 and I thought it was at least 3 times better than my Poor Man's. Maybe it was the elevation of where I was (Flagstaff, AZ) 😆

Very interesting how it's all referred to as PAPPY, even though the official ones don't start until the 15 yr mark...everything else is just a Van Winkle. That being said...got a 10 yr and a special reserve 12 yr being raffled for purchase in a few days, at one of the local liquor stores, as well as some Elmer T, EH Taylor Barrel Proof & Warehouse C, Blanton's, Michter's 10 yr, Booker's Noe, Little Book, Weller CYPB & Single Barrel. All the other standard BT products (minus George T & Stagg Jr) will be there, plus a wheelbarrow's worth of picks that this store normally doesn't carry (but can usually be purchased at the superstore down the road). Thankfully, this event will not require waiting in line...because it is currently 35 below zero Fahrenheit outside & nobody got time for that!

I would not compare sample bottles from someone with pours from original bottle. Whiskey sitting in a sample bottle will change in a month, especially if the whiskey is making contact with the cap. A new sample bottle should be cleaned before filling, was it previously used??? You can assume the sample bottle did not add any notes…. But you can not be sure.
