I feel like for the price this thing is amazing. The whole “flip screen” and “internal ND” thing that people are complaining about is nonsense. Not every camera is meant for run and gun situations. Especially once you start getting into the cinema world. The Komodo doesn’t have a flippy screen or internal ND’s. Companies made magnetic ND’s, buy one of those. Most people own external monitors already. If you need a flippy screen go buy a hybrid camera. If you need internal ND’s go buy a C70 or FX6. but the fact that they listened and created a box style camera finally and at an AMAZING price! Come on people, stop letting your favorite RUclipsr make you think otherwise. Blackmagic has amazing color science and the best menu system. And they give us cinema quality for super cheap! 3k after tax? Come on!
Do you see that fancy flip screen on the ursa? They know how to do it, but they don't want. But... The problem here is not the flip screen or the brick (not box) shaped camera, is the sensor, same flappy sensor as the 6K.
If internal ND is nonsense, why does the 12k cine have it then? lmaoo what a dumb comment
@@MarkusFinholt does any of the red Komodo’s have internal ND’s? 🤔 such a dumb response to a comment sir.
@@raquetamalvada that sensor is amazing and they put it inside of a box style camera that everyone has wanted. Nothing is never enough for any of you. “Omg no internal NDs” *cry cry cry* “omg it has no flippy screen, this is the worst camera ever!” Like come on, the sensor is amazing, they finally gave full frame again, different lens mount options and a box style and that’s not enough? Crazy
@@yosoyalquan You're inplying Red komodo is the peak of camera development? 😭
This combine with the new DJI Focus Pro… mind blown
YES!
yep. BMD product launch was massive. But the Pyxis 6k was the highlight !! .... Can't wait for getting my hands on one.
If this had internal NDs and if that screen on the side flipped out at this price point...that would've been game over.
What’s good with everyone and these damn flip screens lol. Go buy a Sony ZVE1
It’s already game over. I’m sure you know that reds and zcam and I believe kinefinity cameras also do not have internal ND’s and also do not have flip out screens. That is because the are cinema cameras, not run and gun documentary cameras.
Going to be difficult accessing the camera menus while filming isn’t it?
@OrangeHouseMedia over 20 years of using mostly every kind of camera out there, I've never used the menu while filming, and no one will, I wonder how you do that, filming a scene an going to menu changing the iso and codecs..
@half-cockedproductions1350 Alexa mini owner here, just pointing out that my original Alexa mini has internal NDs, plus the standard EVF has a built in flip out screen. BUT I do agree that the PYXIS not having these shouldn't be a deal breaker especially for the price. I also have the URSA G2 which has both, but im tired of the bulk, so im pretty stoked for this new cam. AND full frame? Insane
the ursa is definitely the go, the pyxsis is dope but really just a repackaged existing camera which isn't bad but not overly new
yeah i am with you the ursa definitely, i wish the ursa was more boxier but its smaller than the ursa mini. 12k sensor and 16+ stops of dynamic range plus OPEN GATE! Yeah am sold
@@emmanuelnkwocha1275 Yeah its looking quite huge and would be hard to solo operate... but then again it's not made for a solo operator. The 16 stops of dynamic range is really interesting as bm in the past isn't one to lie about usable dynamic range stops cough sony cough haha
I have the ursa 4.6k g2 and am seriously considering the pyxsis as a replacement for my pocket 4k
@@TavianOrd lol ohh sony 🤣 😂
Looks good, but is essentially a re packaged pocket 6k.
I'd pay twice the price if it had internal ND filters, IBIS and a decent phase detect AF system.
As things stand, the Panasonic S5iix offers more, (6k prores HQ) for less money in a smaller lighter body. (And even shoots BRAW)
I've been holding off on swapping my B cam pocket camera, because I vowed to only do it if BM comes out with a box style camera, and finally they did! :D
I agree with the points u make. thanks for not b-ing and moaning like over 90% of the reactions to this cam
As a current Blackmagic user, can someone let me in on why everyone seems mindblown by the Pyxies? I feel like it's only a marginal upgrade. No autofocus or lidar seems like a miss when compared to Sony, no?
The same reason why sony users were blown away by the FX3 compared to the A7Siii. Same camera different body.
Love bmd cameras. Had one but sold it because I want AF . Hopefully BMD will put this down the line because its what many solo operators need and want.
I wouldn’t have minded if it was a bit bigger and a bit more expensive, but had the same screen system as the new URSA, where you can fold it out, but also fold it in with the screen looking outward, so it would basically be the same as it is now…
I'm finalizing a reaction to this and I had the same thought. I feel like that was a missed opportunity on blackmagics part
@@jeremypope-levison721 maybe they will release a Pro model where you have a flippable screen, like they did with the pocket cameras. Who knows…😊
Just Please make sure if you will be at NAB that if PYXIS 6K Mounts are interchangeable. bcoz otherwise stuck with one mount and then use adopters are bad but not too much.
Very excited by the Blackmagic design PYXIS 6K
It's crazy that they couldn't at the new Cine flip screen to the Pyro
At least based on the mounts that they use in you can get third-party ND drop in filters Meike has for The EF and L mount at NAB
Seeing Irix lenses taking center stage on the newest Black Magic camera fills me with so much pride!
Well deserved 👏🏼
Ursa Mini is a BACK BREAKER! I loved the my Ursa mini G2 but It did a number on my back mate! 😅
Amen to that!
I don't know how the Cine compares to other high end cameras but 15K sounds like a very competitive price, given everything that's included. I can see it being really popular with aspiring movie makers.
The pyxis looks really versatile too and incredible value but I'm a little surprised they didn't come out with a new 8K sensor for its release. Though I'm sure that won't be too far off with the same form factor.
It's good to see a price drop for the Video Assists and I'm tempted to get one but I thought they might have launched a refresh this year as it's been out a good while now. They could easily have larger screens with thinner bezels in roughly the same form factors and maybe reduce the weight a bit.
Yes same sensor in the Pyxis, but with a better thermal design.
Apparently, you don’t need to buy the hard drive reader as you can use a USBC cable to download the footage directly from the 12k camera. I would assume this method would be much slower.
Looks amazing and I was gearing up to purchase a Pyxis but not willing to move from my Sony ecosystem (lenses). Still will definitely get my hands on it to test.
Honestly my biggest complaint is the frame rates, how can a 4 year old bmpcc4k do better frame rates than this new sensor. And I've heard lowlight is worse also. Other than that it's everything I've wanted. ITs clear they try to take things away to keep the other models valuable.
I think it’s pretty brilliant they put the monitor on the side without a flip screen and they didn’t add VND. (Brilliant for easy growth, not for us) They’re going to sell the shit out of this, and in future updates you’ll see a flip screen and VND.
i will 1000000% get the Pyxis 6k. as it has more internal volume than the Cinema 6k i suspect the rolling shutter will be negligible and it is just delicious
there's actually 3 new cameras, not 2. You forgot the URSA Cine 17K with 65mm Sensor which is gonna compete with the ARRI ALEXA 65.
I really think Blackmagic nailed it with the Pyxis BUT, it would have been nice to have two mini-xlr port instead of just one. The only flaws on that new body imo.
Hoping like you said that the mounts may be interchangeable - that said, if not, I don’t see why you wouldn’t go for the L-mount version and then get a PL mount adapter, you can even get something like the mofage with drop in NDs while still having the versatility of the L mount. Is there a reason why one might go for PL mount only version?
The only reason I can think of for not going with the L mount is if there's any play in it. I've never used one so I dunno how solid it is compared to PL. But yeah, the Mofage vND is really nice so it makes sense to go the L mount plus adapter route.
@@alzibaba Yeah agreed!
Although the L-Mount version is certainly the most versatile one, and even if a PL adapters can be fixed with a screw, a cine camera with an aluminum body and a PL mount can be used in a set with heavy cinema lenses without the need for other supports, basically it will not call for issues. I bet it will be considered for various productions for this very reason. To me, the only one that doesn't make sense is the EF mount version.
@@redbit6182 absolutely. 90% of my glass is PL, on balance I'd prefer a PL mount for this reason.
Class videos Gary. I signed up for the newsletter but haven't received the email for confirmation yet
There seems to be a glitch but don't worry, I am still getting sign ups on my side, thanks for the sub 🙌🏼
Seems like the Pyxis will provide a reasonable downsize for the Ursa 6k Broadcast camera I own. Reducing the bulk for hauling in and out definitely matters, and having a camera specifically designed so I can strap a phone or hotspot to the side (rather than the clunky kludge rigs required for the Ursa) starts to make self-contained C2C workflows more manageable on set. The biggest downside to me is the fairly slow readout speeds on the sensor. I’m sure I can get by, but I will still need an alternative camera available for faster paced work. The 12K Cine? Definitely a system designed with a camera crew in mind, meaning among many things that solo operators don’t need a second screen on the AC side of the camera. And then there’s the media which will require a whole new workflow infrastructure to support. Try taking handing one of those cartridges off to a typical DIT and see how they react! Regardless, they seem to have a high end client base which wants to have this feature set, and there’s no question that Apple will love having a single sensor solution for creating VisionPro content later in the year. I personally would love to see them come out with a scaled back version designed for solo operators. Think of it as the “Burano” version with the same sensor but with a single flip screen on the operator side and maybe industry standard media in the back, whether that’s CFExpress B or even better, a pair of USB-C slots which can accommodate a pair of small SSDs! Not holding my breath. In the mean time, for commercial work I still need to pick up a Sony FX camera to match the many spec sheets I see with a Sony requirement.
Yeah, I think there is now a gap for BM in-between the PYXIS and the URSA Cine. A high end low comparison camera built around solo shooting, As you know the last thing we wanted was the URSA body design to get bigger, although the specs do seem amazing.
@@OBP_ Roughly 1.5 inches longer and **3 lbs** heavier than the current 12k which puts it into the same rigging league as a Venice 2. I’m suppose there’s production niches where the 12k Cine fits, but I’m certain it’s not for my small production business. Not in the immediate future anyway.
Never understood this whole box style thing people who are not shooting everyday as their fulltime job. The sensor is more important than the style of the camera box IMO. Hopefully this new release will make the regular 6k full frame cheaper!!!!!
The Ursa 12k LF is pretty amazing but that's not the most expensive Blackmagic camera, that throne is reserved for the Ursa 17K camera that is coming out later
Juss as t like budget anamorphics , it’s best to pass , as the sensor and rolling shutter , no ND is enough for me to pass . But it’s a step forward , and will sure look into it in a couple more revisions.
Been wanting one for years! Crane 3s that is!
And they used the IRIX lenses
OG Ursa 12K had lower MTF than RED Raptor, Sony Venice 2, Alexa Mini LF and ARRI Alexa 35. The number of Ks are meaningless.
3 cinema cameras mate… 6K box, 12K Cine and 17K 65mm Cine
And 3 versions of the 6K box at that
Thank You, I'm in Uganda!
Blackmagic always brings out Magic and overtakes everyone! Most affordable software considering that its literally the BEST of them all out there. Cameras Amazing at an unbeatable Price. Just everything they do, they set the bar nobody ever reaches and im not even a Blackmagic shooter. I use Sony but always LOVED Blackmagic as a Company! Its Great! Cool video... just subbed! >;))
So glad I just bought the Cine 6k. SMH. Thanks BM.
Seriously would consider but really hard to drop the C70 with internal ND and IBIS. But damn this looks good.
Fine, and cheap for what it is, but introduces limitations as much as it removes them. Now back to one mini-xlr, no ND's, no ProRes (not many production houses I know would want you to hand them braw files), yet another different battery system (quite annoying if you also run pocket cams), no option to power a monitor so most people will want to rig a v-mount on the back unless they're using a gimbal. I'm sure it'll be good for some people, and it is great for the price, I'm just not sure it solves anything. To me it just feels like investing in a C70 or an FX6 makes a lot more sense for everyday work at the moment in terms of power, frame rates and flexibility. If you want a box though even a used Komodo might be a better choice for a lot of people if you can spend a little more, and you'd get a global shutter. Horses for courses though maybe I'll get to try a Pyxis at some point.
Thank you for your positive feedback on this video. I appreciate your support.
I'm hoping some people will start dumping the 6k full frame over the Pyxis so I can grab one cheaply.
👌🏼👌🏼
They delivered again!!!
keep the box camera. A whole new camera and we still are stuck at 13 stops? Why would I upgrade?
Stuck how? You’re just going to put it to REC709 and upload it to RUclips. The ignorance just astounds me.
where did you read 13 stops? That's nearly as good as an Arri Mini LF!
@@JonPais That's just what Blackmagic said on the presentation just like they did the regular 6K
@@Fedorevsky But it can’t do 13 stops. Around 12 stops at ISO 800.
@@JonPais yeah around 12 stops at the lower native iso range and 10+ at the higher
Waiting for someone to publish a flipoutscreen mod before I get this one!
I liked, is not perfect but the battery and the L mount got my interest
Trying to determine if this would be a good budget solution for indoor video broadcast. I know it's not labeled a broadcast cam but SDI output, and a box form factor scream rigged manned camera on a tripod.
Need something on a budget, and I'm tired of the terrible color and image quality of PTZ cams and camcorders. This seems like the only camera that I could get a good zoom lens for and rig out for under $5k.
Yeah, it sounds like a good plan. The weakness would be low light and no AF. So along as you 100% not going to need them. Also, look at the URSA broadcast G2 alot more features and a better low light.
Just signed up to the newsletter but think I was already signed up when I bought your S5iix guide 😂 Am I still in with a chance?

Great video. Brendan in Dublin 😮
Hope this will drop the price of the S5IIx even more and can get my hands on it.
Fantastic review, well excited for this. I am in need of a gimbal too, my weebil s died. 😢lol
what if you bump the screen and it cracks. how to replace it? if you have it shoulder rig that touch screen might be close to your face.
also no ND is really bad if they want a modular camera that is more run and gun style...
@@spinningrodfisherman it's a 3k dollar camera. You guys need to realise what you're asking for.
@@botbot3698 nd maybe they can’t fit in the price. But ergonomics of the screen could have been different choice of design.
I'm reading many news articles stating it has 13 stops of DR, not 16.
BM fanboys be like "uuu no nd! only 13stops! This is garbage!" when they only has android phone for their "CINEMA CAMERA"
is that so?
komodo x only has 13.5 stops for 3x the price
@@EastonOliver is that so?
Does this has global shutter? It's not mention anywhere about the sensor that's why.
Of course not, it's the same 6 year old sensor from Sony
Can this camera do eye autofocus unlike modern mirroless cameras
I am not getting any confirmation mail regarding my subscription ... but nonetheless, great content and keep up with the great work ;)
There seems to be a glitch, don't worry tho still get them on my side of things. Thanks for the sub 🙌🏼
Any 12v output? Need to power those external monitors.
Curious about power options for the required external monitor... Is there a power out? Or is it reliant on bp batteries with additional output, or monitors with batteries (heavy and clunky)...
Very good point.
That m.2 dock is NOT a good idea. We dont want RED style specific SSD.
Can the Pyxis record in ProRes?
I saw a tiny mic input. Im guessing that's it for audio? wonder if the audio quality is usable.
Also has mini XLR with phantom power. Doesn’t mean preamps are gonna be any good tho.
@@That_Desert_B1tch oh interesting...thanks
If you already got the UMP G2 and the BMCC6K you don't really need the Pyxis
Not sure who bm are listening to when it comes to design and user feedback but this is once again a bizarre example of ergonomic planning in a professional set up. V lock?? Card bays opening backwards?? Proprietary evf and connections?? Single pro audio in?? Sure phantom power but single input?? No interchangeable lens mounts?? Three versions?? Remote app integration?? Grip control?? Run stop ext control?? Wireless support? I dont see anyone giving up their fx3 or fx6 for this let alone their Komodo or C70. Anamorphic great but at low frame rates. Ok for narrative for sure and maybe the one thing that it has on its rivals though i think the mavo has a better imagine all round. I hope i am wrong but as with the kx the head scratching of third party accessories companies will test some of these basic functional requirements for a pro user in trying to avoid turning the box into a loaf of bread. Certainly not what i am inclined to spend £3k on given nikons acquisition of red. Interesting but typically odd.
What about frame rates?
NO IBIS, No autofocus No WAY JOSE.
Amezing give out
Thanks for the lessons
What's the most versatile mount to buy? Can you use EF glass on L mount?
Yes. L mount can be adapted to PL or EF.
@@hikkub thank you!
i know you love your burano but im watching this feeling like ur punching air rn
That gible boss everything you said was done like yesterday
They look very cool!
i dont understand why they wouldnt include internal nd in the pysix
Flange depth for L Mount. Very few manufacturers are making cameras with internal ND for a mirrorless mount. They could’ve for PL & LPL but probably just not worth manufacturing change.
Wait a minute where did they place the screen and cant flip out?
Anyway sell me 6k cinema,NEW One No for me
It's meant to be used as the top screen on the Komodo for the menu, you need an extra monitor
Why no global shutter 😢
1. Adding a monitor but conveniently forget the hinge to be able to flip out and twist the screen.
2. Gently asking $500 more for the same sensor with all the glory, warts and all.
3. Nicely rub salt on the wounds and nudging us to buy actual usable monitor.
'
In my humble opinion, if they wont discontinue the OG BMCC FF 6K for couple of years into the future, I have no issues or qualms.
It's not a handy cam for run-n-gun videographers. It's a camera for cinematographers.
Blackmagic slowly learning where all the buttons, connectors and screens supposed to be in the first place.
Can you rig a external Monitor on the PYXIS ?
Of course. It has SDI outs. The Blackmagic Video Assist monitors all have SDI ins.
I'm assumig the Pyxis has rolling shutter but does the new Ursa have a global shutter? I'd love to see BM use the Production 4K sensor in a full frame set up. Cheers!
It has a rolling shutter, but it has single digit readout speed on most frame rates so not an issue.
@@half-cockedproductions1350 where did you read that
It will most likely have a sub 6ms shutter and maybe slightly higher in 12k.
Edit. I dk why I wrote this but I'll leave it for posterity
@@bedenegative6450 It will most likely have no less than 15.7 ms rolling shutter in 12K, so not slightly more than cropped, but more like double. We’ll have to wait & see the tests instead of pulling numbers out of our a**.
@@JonPais Yea you're most likely right, I've just seen the max frame rate is 224 in 4k so maybe it won't be as exciting.
it's not JUST out my a""... the current ursa shoots 60 to 75 in 12k and this is full frame but has a higher frame rate. That may lead to a better rolling shutter, but it's all speculation. Exciting stuff
Box camera! Box camera!
The 6k ff just got a price reduction of $200 dollars too.
Nice, that camera could become a super value buy on the used market when the new cameras drop.

arreh and sonneh XD
5 year old sensor tech in a new body.
I don't care if it has rolling shutter. I don't care if it has the same DR.
It just needed to be faster.
The design team really has very little imagination, and is useless regarding ergonomics.
They should have had a slightly smaller screen on the back to make the box square and less long. That screen on the side is absolutely useless. This way, you'll still need an extra monitor. So, it's useless on a gimbal.
If they settled on NFP batteries, the extra width would have allowed two NFP slots on top, with space for the handle in the center.
So, they almost did it.
But stumbled at the finish line.
❤❤❤❤❤
I wanna sell my P6K Pro and my P4K and get the Pyxis and the EVF for it. Then I’m gonna sell a kidney and get the 12K Cine. 😂
You don't want the 17k, lol?
Miney Ciney
That fix screen makes no sense
No AF. No screen on the top! You need to buy something for it. No rapid. No nd. 13 stops it’s a joke? Garbage camera
Blackmagic played us beautifully. They some how convinced many of us that just by changing the form factor to a box, and making a really good monitor now much less easy to use and awkward, and increasing the price by $500, still got us praising just because box is easy to rig?
It’s not just a box the material is the same as the URSA line. It’s a box full frame 6k camera for $3000 that’s crazy. Imagine putting a Kipon speed booster that will make it a medium format box camera.
The Pyxis is not bang for buck.. crippled. No ND's.. no usable screen.. only 13 stops of dynamic range. Time waster.
You'd need to spend almost twice as much to get a FX6 but without internal RAW, or C70 but without full frame.
@@frankfeng2701I can’t imagine how resistant that side screen will be on though environments like the ones I shoot documentaries in with the fx6…
This camera isn’t made to shoot documentaries. You have an fx6,!that is what it is made for. This is made for scripted narrative filmmaking and it will sell like hotcakes.
@@half-cockedproductions1350 unless you don't want to have a 'video' look in your documentaries (FX6) but a cinema look instead (Braw). You don't think you can shoot documentaries with the Pyxis if you pair it with the new DJI Focus Pro, and put a lens adaptor with ND filter or use a VND? Honestly, you cannot compare the IQ of the Pyxis (BMCC 6K FF) (cinema look) with the FX6 (video look).
1) Since when is 13 stops not enough? 2) Where did you read 13 stops?
