Tilta or Smallrig will produce a V-mount to BP-U battery adapter to allow you to use a V-mount battery on the Pyxis. I can’t wait for the Pyxis to come out. I have everything ready for this camera. I purchased the camera, memory card, black magic video assist, and battery. I have lenses, matte box, lights, gimble, tripod, CineShooter, dolly, jib and many more.
As the lens now is further from the sensor, will a "crop" be created? Will the image be "magnified" on final camera output? Is the image circle (diagonal) larger/smaller than full frame lenses/sensor? Is you lens set full frame or APSC?

A strap on the handle allows you to relax your hand while still stabilizing the camera letting gravity rather than grip strength and stamina do most of the work. And keep in mind, even if the handle happens to have a run/stop button that doesn’t mean you need to power or connect it. Any handle can…just be a handle.
This form factor is ideal for the Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig-which I already have. As for a monitor, I own a Portkeys 5 WR III which includes Bluetooth camera control. Works fine with the Pockets. Though I expect we will see plenty of USB-C powered alternatives coming out in the months the ahead. So don’t over spend on a monitor right away. A USB monitor won’t need batteries! Which will mean the rig will be lighter and will have a lower center of gravity (aka less likely to tip over when you put the camera down. Some should be very inexpensive as well. You can buy 11” USB-C laptop companion monitors for less than $100 on Amazon no separate video connection required. The Pyxis will be able to do the same and I expect BM will eventually roll out their own control monitor which will be a great addition to the system.

Does this mean the PYXIS will have a new power connector type?
Hey Michael in about 6 months the Blackmagic Video Assist monitors will receive a firmware update allowing them full control over the Pyxis 6K just like the built-in monitor. So that 100% should be the monitor of choice for anyone getting into this camera system.
@@initialfocus A dev who works on the video assist told me 6 months and the main reason was all the feedback on the fixed screen being somewhat limiting.
It didn't seem like they would based on all the interviews, but that would definitely be a game changer, especially for those who want pro res @@evanthecameraman
I also have a very very wild guess that front USB port for EVF could potentially be used for phone/tablet so you could monitor or control the camera with app. Blackmagic always surprises everybody with new firmware features over time, so it could happen...
@Siimkristjanpariis I asked them directly that I would love to see this feature. They were kinda silent which either means it’s already in development or it’s never going to happen 😂
Which monitor is a tough choice. I think having camera control from a Portkeys monitor allows controlling the camera from a distance if it were ever on a jib; however, I have to say the integrated transmitter is a potentially really good option.
Just picked up the 5” and 7” Portkeys BM. I will also using the BM EVF. Batteries will be Core. They have a D-Tap built into them. Media, no go with Angelbird, I’ve had nothing but issues with them. Probably going Sandisk Pro Cinema. This camera will supplement my Sony Burano if a client wants raw and not a RED.
Check at the Hedbox HED-BP95D BP-U battery, it has dual D-Tap ports instead of 1 with the Core. So one D-Tap to the Portkeys monitor and one left for anything extra, like a transmitter, or even a follow focus motor (though the focus motor could be powered up by the Portkeys BM monitors!
Hey! It's been a few months, how have the Portkeys monitors been working for you? I've been looking at getting a monitor but am not quite sure what to go with yet.
People swear by smallhd, but it's over $1k. Any insight to their monitors like the indie and cine 5, vs some of the options you suggested? really worth that much more?
I think I'll be getting the BMD video assist 12G 5in as it's 2500 nits HDR - I'm actually hoping they come out with a USB version to pair with these new cameras (I'm sure they will!) I doubt I'll be recording to it, but it's an option if I ever want it - in the meantime, it's a great monitor, very bright and now very competitively priced°¬) Good thing is, I'm not going to be getting my Pyxis until later in the year so there's time for al the real feedback once the cameras are out so I can minimise buying mistakes! I'll be looking to create the tidiest rig I can so internal storage, minimal leads and probably a mechanical follow focus.
Yo, get the L mount then get an EF adapter. L mount is getting more popular, someone is going to make a drop in filter set. And if not then you just gotta spend an extra 200 for a EF to L adapter. They make positive locking adapters.
yep, that's what I'm doing as well. The Sigma EF to L mount works great on the current FF6K. You get way more options (with the shorter flange distance) for only a little extra money. L mount can adapt almost anything.
You REALLY got my hopes up with a L mount to EF mount with drop in NDs adaptor, but yeah, that doesn't exist....I pleaded with three different companies and two of them didn't seem to want to put the time and effert into it and the third never responded. I think someone will make it and make bucket loads of money if they do it well.
well these type of camera might be small in size but it need to operate like a full production work than only you can utilize this system other wise it just a waste of time. the accesory it needed to function stack up your budget way more than you expected, it would be better to buy fx6 platform than any blackmagic camera
The argument about the built in monitor shouldn’t be « Komodo’s monitor is also unusable » (because that’s totally true) BUT « it’s missed opportunity to have been the first-ish box camera with a usable built on screen »… Like an URSA. What I wanted (and probably a few others) is an URSA-esque camera and most of the time when I watch a video about an URSA the user is also using an external SDI monitor, no problem about that, BUT if you’re in pinch or want the lighter possible rig for whatever reason you have a good usable screen. Anyways, I’m sure the dust will settle and people will make great stuff with the PYXIS.
And Mid49 said they will be developing some options for the Pyxis. Including a BP-U to V-mount adapter (similar to what wooden camera and Tilta make for the FX6 which uses the same battery).
The people complaining about the side screen and no built-in NDs are just painting themselves as handycam hobbyists not cinematographers making films. The Pyxis will be Blackmagic's number on selling camera. Dan may already hinted at more Pyxis models coming next year. Guaranteed BM is already working on a Pyxis external control monitor.
That Meike adapter won’t work. It’s for EOS-R lens mounts. You’re gonna have to do front filters. There’s nothing that can adapt EF to locking EF and has rear ND filters.
I once saw someone use the RED Komodo built-in screen on a gimbal and honestly for some project I could see using it, although obviously not a proper way of working
Does anyone know if IR pollution still is a thing with this sensor like it was back with the Pocket 4k/6K? For those you need a ND filter with IR cut otherwise you get horrible discolored blacks. That made the ND choice quite a bit more expensive. Did BMD fix this with the 6k cine / pyxis full frame sensor? If not, this could be another price / quality consideration for people.
I have the BMPCC6K and enjoy it. But I dont see what all the hype of a box is? I can see where when traveling abroad that I will be looked at and denied entry to many locations. Ive been asked if I have a permit in London and Rome with my previous set up. Now I have it scaled down for traveling.
The whole intent of a box camera is to build out and rig the camera with additional accessories. Usually they aren't intended for your typical run-and-gun filming, so it wouldn't be good for your purposes. I work in a production environment and am looking at the PYXIS for its riggable-ness. It's very much not a camera you can just slap a lens on and film with (although I suppose you could).
If I were you, I would go with the L mount because then you can adapt it to EF or PL if you ever go that way in the future. Also, you can get the Tilta Mirage matte box system that clamps on the front of your lenses and the ND filter that it comes with is amazing.
The batteries are the same used on the canon c100 II (Idk about other Canon cinema line but I used that) And they are much more performant than the 970s
I bought Meike’s e-to-ef adapter and it was horrible: lots of blackouts, focus, iris, even the whole power blackout. Got zero support from Meike. Will not touch anything from them ever.
Why are you and people in the comments trying to justify buying this camera? I don't understand and hear me out. The URSA Cine at 15 thousand dollars seems expensive compared to the 3 thousand dollar PYXIS, so I thought. But after you add up everything you need to make the PYXIS an actual usable camera, you are going to be close to 10 thousand dollars. And NOT having a flip out screen does not make it a cinema camera seeing that the URSA Cine camera has a flip out screen and comes with everything you need minus a battery. The PYXIS doesn't make financial sense in the long run. If I was looking for the best return on investment and buying a camera that I could use into the future with usable frame rates, I would save up and purchase the URSA Cine. And the Cine surprisingly comes with everything but a battery. It comes with a usable monitor, built in ND, a hard case, a baseplate, Media!!! (I have never seen a cinema camera come with media outside of an expensive package), battery plate, two lens mounts, a top handle and built in wifi. All this comes in the box and with an actual BOX you can fly with. Why would you buy the PYXIS with half the resolution, half the frame rates and nothing included in the box? In my opinion, it is an absolute waste of money and I would stick with the 6K Pro or if you have to have full frame, the Cinema 6K.
I would buy this camera in a heartbeat if a company could come out with an EF to L mount with drop in ND. Or a variable ND drop in. I don't mind the shape, I can get over the batteries. The screen not tilting is a big bummer, I really wanted an Ursa 4.6k update as I've been waiting for that, but I would buy it, possibly.
If I get it, I’d get the sdi module for my Ninja V. For power I would go with v Mount using the new vmount plates that Kondor Blue announced with the small vmount batteries from SmallRig. In terms of mount, I like the idea of the pl mount for extra sturdiness and lens data pass through. Finally I already have my Tilta mirage matte box with a bunch of Vaxis IRNDs, mist, and polarizer filters.
I'd go with either the Hollyland Portkeys or smallHD monitor the cine 5 is dope. batteries id go with core or hawkwoods the wood handles from smallrig are great also check out vocas bright tangerine shape tilta, bit confused if your getting locking EF how you're planning to use the Meike adapter, This is why I'd recommend going L mount (wished that was locking) and get an adapor. there is a sick one from Revolver who have great NDs made one in L mount an RF mount to locking EF and to PL. this is also why i'd personally recommend L mount as it allows you to go PL if needed. you may end up needed a different mount camera and cant use the one you have.
The thing I cannot understand with the Pyxis is it would not hurt the design to have added a hinge to that side screen. If one doesn’t want the screen to swing out one would not need to use the hinge, but it would not hurt to have added such a simple option. All the old Blackmagic cameras had fixed screens and some people made the same argument that “it is a cinema camera, you should be using another screen anyway” but we all celebrated when they finally gave us the BMP6K Pro with the moveable screen. It is just such a bizarre design choice…
I'll be getting the L-mount version. Still deciding on which PL-to-L adapter to purchase. Cage from either Tilta or Kondor Blue. Battery solution will be a CoreSWX98wh battery for simple minimalist set up, waiting on Tilta or Mid49 to create the FX6 style BP-U to V-mount plate for anything other than a minimalist set up. Purchasing the Rosette side plate. Media storage will be using cfexpress cards
Yeah it's BP-U only. BP-U to V-mount adapters exist, but little information exists on their reliability. I know Tilta has one, but it's for the FX6 with a typical DC power connector (which wouldn't work on the PYXIS, which uses a 2-pin LEMO connector).
@@initialfocus EF was designed to house a mirror. So it’s a much deeper mount. Unfortunately, that means you’re not going to be able to adapt different, particularly new mirrorless lenses to EF. You can only go the other way.
Pretty sure the Meike VND adapter isn’t offered in L mount. The only variable ND option I’ve seen for EF to L mount is the Fotodiox Throttle ND. I own it for my BMCC6K and it’s alright. Sucks not having a clear option (minimum is one stop of ND), so I have the Sigma EF to L adapter with no ND that I have to carry with me for lower light scenes.
I ordered the L mount version as all of my lenses are L mount with the exception of the Irix cine set which are EF. I have the Sigma EF to L adapter. I have the 7" Atomos Shinobi monitor as well as the BM 5". I ordered the two Sony batteries at 350 a piece....yikes! I guess I'll use my matte box for ND's. Hopefully timecode will work well with my Mix Pre 3 II.
Love it ! For a grip I would recommend the DJI Lidar. obviously a little bit of dough to acquire, but it acts as a grip and an auto-focus/ focus wheel when in manual. I think it will be an amazing option for this rig,
i think am going to stick to my pocket 6k pro, wait till version 2 which for sure is going to have a flip out screen just like they did to the pocket 6k and they up graded to the pro and for sure its going to have better dynamic range and better frame rates and most likely nd filters
Monitor wise (even though I'm currently only using HDMI cameras) a long while ago I got the Fotga c50. Has both HDMI/SDI, runs dual batteries at 2000 nits. UI is a bit clumsy but it's still running and cheap as chips!
I'm a little confused as to why people think this camera is so incredible. Yes it's a box, but it's not a very small box. Why would you get this when you could get a BS1H, slap the video assist on it (you'll need an external monitor anyway for either camera) and still have Blackmagic raw. And that camera came out 3 years ago, and it has great autofocus and battery life. The Pyxis should have ditched the in-built screen and shipped with an external screen that can plug into one of the USB-C ports for monitoring and camera control, but still recorded Braw internally. And shrink it to BS1H size. That would have made it an amazing camera for rigging and gimbal work. As it stands now, you'd need a larger gimbal to accommodate it because it's too long and heavy. I only see this being a great camera for shoulder work, at which point get a used ursa mini 4.6K for the same price or less, and it will be far superior in many ways(unless you have to have full frame).
Sorry, commenting as I go! At the moment Meike does not make an EF to L Mount variable ND. The one you have in your basket is for Canon's RF mount. Meike also make a locking PL to Fuji X variable drop in. Please use your platform to bug them to make L mount versions! With the pyxis it's pretty much easy money for them as users aren't worried about degrading their autofocus performance. Where as with my FX30 I don't use their adaptor even though they do have once because the big up side of Sony is brilliant auto focus.
Question about the Meike adapter though… if it’s EF to EOS-R how does that fit on any of the PYXIS mounts? Do you need another adapter as well? Like EOS-R to L-mount in addition?
@@initialfocus get the L mount version :) it opens you up to adapting anything, getting drop in filter adapters. It’ll allow you to potentially move into PL should you decide. The Sigma MC-21 is great, it even has mounting holes at the bottom of you want to mount it to some sort of support for better stability.
Is it not possible to use a usb-c to HDMI cable to a monitor on this? If the front USB-C port is a display port, then why would you not be able to run a monitor from it using a USB-C to HDMI cable? I know you won't have camera control from it, but a monitor should work, no?

Hey Michael in about 6 months the Blackmagic Video Assist monitors will receive a firmware update allowing them full control over the Pyxis 6K just like the built-in monitor. So that 100% should be the monitor of choice for anyone getting into this camera system.
I asked them in any monitors would get camera control and they said they didn’t know 😂 makes sense though! Video assist may be the way to go
@@initialfocus A dev who works on the video assist told me 6 months and the main reason was all the feedback on the fixed screen being somewhat limiting.
I think there are adapters from BP-U to V-Mount
@@calebrice9972 solid. I am using them with my Burano, FX9, and FX3. Portkeys UI is crap, but the image is top shelf
@@jamesbridges1107 Sick! Does the focus assist work well?
@@calebrice9972 it does, if you mean peaking.
im slightly disappointed that the top handle isnt included but i mean, no biggie
People swear by smallhd, but it's over $1k. Any insight to their monitors like the indie and cine 5, vs some of the options you suggested? really worth that much more?
the wooden handle can be sanded down a bit and turned black fairly easily
Don’t want a built in monitor. I want a dedicated touch screen for functionality
Then get a DSLR style camera.
I think I'll be getting the BMD video assist 12G 5in as it's 2500 nits HDR - I'm actually hoping they come out with a USB version to pair with these new cameras (I'm sure they will!) I doubt I'll be recording to it, but it's an option if I ever want it - in the meantime, it's a great monitor, very bright and now very competitively priced°¬)
Good thing is, I'm not going to be getting my Pyxis until later in the year so there's time for al the real feedback once the cameras are out so I can minimise buying mistakes!
Come on Michelle, keep doing it well
Don't count out the OSEE monitors, better bang for your buck, sdi built in, and amazing brightness outdoors. Much better value over smallhd fyi.
Pyxis is nice, but I'm so down for a 12K FF "SOLO" with less features / screens and shorter and V-Mount. That dynamic / resolution is insane.
def go with the port keys because you can control all of the camera functions from the monitor
That Atmos Shinobi 7” has bad reviews on B&H
If I get that it’s going to be for anamorphic lens with DJI focus for sure
For monitors. Im going for the black magic assist running at 395$ to keep the budget low.
That Meike adapter won’t work. It’s for EOS-R lens mounts. You’re gonna have to do front filters. There’s nothing that can adapt EF to locking EF and has rear ND filters.
Why did my brain read it as EF to EF 🤦🏻♂️
@@initialfocus It happens to the best of us. Literally the same comment I was going to post here. Main reason I'm considering the L-Mount version
@@CineMobilePodcast me too
There’s a fotodiox EF to L adapter with VND
I once saw someone use the RED Komodo built-in screen on a gimbal and honestly for some project I could see using it, although obviously not a proper way of working
Does anyone know if IR pollution still is a thing with this sensor like it was back with the Pocket 4k/6K? For those you need a ND filter with IR cut otherwise you get horrible discolored blacks. That made the ND choice quite a bit more expensive. Did BMD fix this with the 6k cine / pyxis full frame sensor? If not, this could be another price / quality consideration for people.
yea, if you want rear ND you need to get the L mount version of the camera....
CoreSWX makes great BPU batteries with USB-C and P-Tap for additional accessories. and a lot cheaper than the Sonys.
Can u use
Blackmagic PYXIS 6K with dji rs3
Atomos! >;))
Is there an L Mount to Rf adapter? Does anyone know of any? How can I shoot rf lenses on this thing
So the Sony batteries are the only power option? No option for V or gold mount?
Yeah it's BP-U only. BP-U to V-mount adapters exist, but little information exists on their reliability. I know Tilta has one, but it's for the FX6 with a typical DC power connector (which wouldn't work on the PYXIS, which uses a 2-pin LEMO connector).
There’s a fotodiox EF to L adapter with built in VND
Two versions, one passive and one active. I have the passive version for my s5ii. Works great
For the monitor I was thinking about a portrays because of the onboard camera control
It’s possible you’re confused about how the lens adapters work.
As someone else stated I I was looking for an EF to EF adapter and I picked a EF to RF 🥴
@@initialfocus EF was designed to house a mirror. So it’s a much deeper mount. Unfortunately, that means you’re not going to be able to adapt different, particularly new mirrorless lenses to EF. You can only go the other way.
An EF to EF ND filter adapter is pretty much impossible without losing infinity focus. @@initialfocus
How come the black magic video assist isn't in consideration? With the reduced prices its worth considering IMO.
Kondor blue side handles are awesome, check those out.
maybe the usb port on the front can convert to hdmi? need an official black magic monitor over usb like the EVF with all the menus etc
I’m getting the locking EF version so I just need EF to EF drop in adapter
@@initialfocusthey don’t make that. The one you show in the video is EF to EOS R.
@@RonCoy I was thinking the same thing. That's an EF to EOS R not EF to EF
DJI Focus Pro as handle...why wouldn't you?
Hadn’t thought of that….i like it
FACTS ON FACTS ON FACTS.
Also, nice meeting you and the wifey at NAB!
Nitze has a black rosette side grip
feelworld has some good SDI monitors
Question about the Meike adapter though… if it’s EF to EOS-R how does that fit on any of the PYXIS mounts? Do you need another adapter as well? Like EOS-R to L-mount in addition?
Read it wrong lol that adapter would indeed not work sadly
@@initialfocus get the L mount version :) it opens you up to adapting anything, getting drop in filter adapters. It’ll allow you to potentially move into PL should you decide. The Sigma MC-21 is great, it even has mounting holes at the bottom of you want to mount it to some sort of support for better stability.
@@jockturner1547 yep! I use the Sigma MC21 adapters on my work FF6Ks… works great! L mount is WAY more flexible.
Is it not possible to use a usb-c to HDMI cable to a monitor on this? If the front USB-C port is a display port, then why would you not be able to run a monitor from it using a USB-C to HDMI cable? I know you won't have camera control from it, but a monitor should work, no?
Michelle? You’re fucking awesome. We would love to see more of you
