Terry great video it explains alot. I was going to get the 24 mm gmaster. But now knowing what the new 20mm can do I'll save the money I would have spent on the gm 24mm and buy the Sigma 16mm f1.4 I just got a free lens!
Been looking all over but it seems the low light between the two is never covered. I know the Sony would win with the full frame sensor but I’d really like to know just how much of a difference the quality image is between the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and the Sony 24mm 1.4 are at low light.
Looking at the test on RUclips on my iPhone which most people will watch the video on. Yes the Sony is better but only side by side. I can tell you right now it’s not worth the price unless you have that amount of money coming In consistently. I could not tell a difference just bought my sigma can’t wait for it to get here! Also I subbed! Keep it up bro! 💪🏽
TW, you are an incredible speaker, educator, and tech leader. You highlighted one extremely important tidbit I wasn't aware of. The conversions you illustrated with 16mm + 24mm was BOOM! Thank you for allowing me to STOP scratching my head. As a newbie, I was totally confused. I appreciate you.
Thanks for the comparison! I have the Sigma on a A6100, but i'm JUST starting out. I definitely see the need for the 24 G master, it's sharper and you don't get the distortion in the middle of the frame like you do on the Sigma. I'm learning to use the distortion to my advantage, but I'd feel a lot more confident doing portraits and video work with the G master. Also, everyone talks about the focal length crop factor, but not many mention the aperture affect also - thank you.
I'm seeing the G Master used from $900 to $1100 now. New on eBay is around $1290. Crazy how a year can affect the prices with more of them out there now. I have an A6400 with a couple of lenses and I'm seriously considering the G Master. Although for what I do, the Sigma would probably be the smart choice price wise. I'm seeing it new on eBay for around $365. Great video here. Thanks for making this comparison.
BROOOO! I was just looking for this comparison and u was showed to me! Yeah, GM is sharper, but for 10x money difference, i'll stay with my 16mm for now. Did u already compared a 50 1.2/1.4 GM with any 50mm 1.8 (apsc) on apsc mode? I'd love see a comparison like that... I own a a6500, and i'm wondering about change my glasses to FF for a future body upgrado to FF. First i was looking for 24GM, but in this vid I see that can wait and I can just use the 16 on FF very well. But I have here a sony 50 1.8 OSS and a tamron 17-70 2.8, i'm seeing what I can change first for FF. Wich do you think that its most advantage?
one of the reasons why there also is more of a sharpness difference could be from the loss or resolution when using the 16mm sigma. this is only when it comes to photos.
One of the smarter comparisons around (re: aperture multiplier). Others just compare them on the same F-stop, of course APS-C bokeh will be busier all the time.
Could you put the g master on the a6000? The a6000 series doesn’t have very good apsc 24mm lens options and I’d like to see how the g master performs on a crop body
I realize this video is 2 years old but this is actually the comparison I was looking for, and I really like your break down here. On that note, I’ve officially ruled out the Sony 24mm G-Master because of the price, plus., both Sony and Sigma have each rolled out with new 20mm primes. That’s another comparison to the 16mm f1.4 I’d like to see. Thanks!
I bought the Sigma trifecta - 16mm, plus the 30mm and the 56mm all f1. 4 lenses which still cost less than the Sony 24mm GM. The Sony maybe better in some regards but I am not a professional so I cannot warrant the price.
Thanks Terry, great video. I have the Sigma 16mm for my Sony a6400 and I love it. I am thinking of getting the Sigma 30mm as well, have you tried the Sigma 30mm?
Sony gm has creamier background blur I have this sigma 16 on a73 most of the time. It doubles as 20mm (clear image zoom 1.2x) and 24mm ( apsc mode), such an execellent value lens. Il wait for the sigma 24 1.4 dg dn to upgrade on that
hey ben, i have the sigma 16mm too on my a73, it equals to a 24mm right? so what if i also use the camera zoom x2? does that mean that i can get up to 48mm?
İ am just wondering that whats the real angle of sigma”s cause its not full frame , i heard something about it thats equivalent 21mm , is that true or its almost 24, and thanks for the video!!
Got the sigma from eBay for 250 euros to work around exactly the same problem, this will be since b roll Lende for 60 fps and also 120 fps, remember that the HD on the A7iv looks better in crop mode for some reason :)
Bruh, great informative video, just wondering have you ever done this same comparison for low light differences? I have the A7C which I currently use the Sigma 16mm, just wondering would it be a big difference for low light benefits that would make the 24mm Gangsta mode worth it, besides bragging rights, which only 1% of my friends would get. Lol.
But is there a mistake? because i think you can´t compare F numbers. Thats only possible with T Numbers. Because F Nummber is not an indicator for light transparency and so its probably not the same. F number is calculated with the pupil entrance diameter i think. Theres a video from Gerald Undone. But im not 100% sure!!!!!!! But none or the less thanks for the nice video, i think its not affecting the compairson that much.
Technically you are correct. T numbers on cine lenses are the only way to truly show light gathering capability when comparing lenses. But the formula still works to get you in the same ballpark when comparing non cine lenses. Great point that most people don’t know or understand!
Hi mate! A very good comparison here. On point. Is it possible to have the same comparison in a low light setting? I was into that and I hope you can do it in one of your next videos. I think it would be a very good comparison since I'm also considering a full-frame path with the rumored Sony A5/A6 coming mid-September. But if it will not come then the A6600 now on sale at $1088 USD with one extra NPZ100 battery, SD Card, Tripod and other accessories are hard to beat here in the gulf, I think I'm leaning towards the APS-C unless the new A5 comes at presumably $1000 USD, then I'm considering it paired with Sony 24mm f1.4 GM. I hope you would compare those that I have mentioned in the next video so aps-c upgraders will have an idea if it is worth it to upgrade into full-frame with that combo especially for a lowlight comparison. Cheers mate!
Well explained! I'm looking at moving for the Canon line up to Sony. I haven't invested deeply in Canon glass, but will be purchasing the Sony Lens moving forward, particularly the cinema lenses.
Hey man. This is a really informative video, and I decided to get Sigma 16mm + Sony 20mm, instead of 24GM for my use case, which costs roughly the same. Adding timestamp to your video will be really helpful!!
Me too! - although in the 3 side by side the sigma is using a different sensor so... also the first two could be considered more 'cinematic' - wonder if Terry was using the same profiles?
Thank you for doing this. Many on RUclips are sucking Sony balls and refuse to compare Apples to Apples when there is a huge price difference. I will buy the sigma lens because I am not a professional and not worth to pay so much for a G badge or a GM badge. Impressive work you did here. Please do not stop! We love you!
I Terry, quick question. I’m a new hobby photographer/video been shooting with a 6600 and a Ricoh GR3 for street photography, and been thinking about going full frame, 7C or just waiting for the new 7lV. Can I still use my sigma 1.4 #fam on the full frame? Since I probably won’t be able to buy FF lenses right away. Really enjoy your content. IG @raulcordo Thanks.
Terry great video it explains alot. I was going to get the 24 mm gmaster. But now knowing what the new 20mm can do I'll save the money I would have spent on the gm 24mm and buy the Sigma 16mm f1.4 I just got a free lens!
Yeah man that sounds like a great decision
Thanks for doing a proper comparison on this! Been looking for this exact comparison for weeks and you're the first one to do it right. Appreciate it.
Sigma 16mm f1.4 for my budget but the Song 1.4 does look amazing.
Nothing wrong with that! The 16mm is ultra!
Been looking all over but it seems the low light between the two is never covered. I know the Sony would win with the full frame sensor but I’d really like to know just how much of a difference the quality image is between the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and the Sony 24mm 1.4 are at low light.
I second this, I’m trying to decide which one to get for astrophotography, for my APS-C crop sensor Sony A6400….
@@tishadee79 get the Sigma 16mm or Rokinon 12mm

nice!! welcome to the squad!
One of the first comparisons I actually watched all the way through. Super concise said what needed to be said! Awesome vid man keep it up!
Hi 👋 great video ! Is there big difference in distortion between the two lens ?
Nice video! I just bought the Sigma 16mm for my a6400. I love it!
thanks for coming thru! you are going to LOVE that lens!
one of the reasons why there also is more of a sharpness difference could be from the loss or resolution when using the 16mm sigma. this is only when it comes to photos.
when it comes to video im sure there is less of a difference than with photos.
Actually prefer the Sigma on the outside test video..GM has focus breathing issues at F1.4..then with the extra money go to Japan for a month.
There's always going to be haters that know too much and wonder why we make these videos. You keep what you doing Terry.
will u lose megapixel if u use the 24mm GM to a sony 6500?
please, could you compare 24 mm Full frame and 15 mm APS-C
One of the smarter comparisons around (re: aperture multiplier). Others just compare them on the same F-stop, of course APS-C bokeh will be busier all the time.
Hell even Sony 24mm f2 bokeh is creamier than Sigma 16mm f1.4.
Man, with all the cool camera gear you cover and how good it looks, I'd love to see you doing gun and related gear reviews.
maybe one day!
Could you put the g master on the a6000? The a6000 series doesn’t have very good apsc 24mm lens options and I’d like to see how the g master performs on a crop body
Oh the Sigma 16 is weather sealed though. Of the f/1.4 Sigma trio on APS-C, only the 30mm f/1.4 isn't weather sealed.
I've had an a6300 and a7ii for years, and never knew about the effective aperture multiplier! Great vid thanks!
Always be learning! Glad I was able to teach you something new. I am forever a student as well! Thanks for watching!

That Sony 1.4 does look amazing. Well worth the price. Also, nice thumbnail!
Yeah man. So good to for the price! And thanks!
Love ur video! Is there any chance that you can compare Sony 20mm f1.8 and sigma 16mm f1.4, that will be close and amazing battle I guess
Which is the best lens to shoot a dance video with a nice bokeh? I have the a73. Thank you.
What lens do you use for your talking headshots man? Amazing quality! Do you use a particular picture profile for these kinds of shots?
Sony gm has creamier background blur I have this sigma 16 on a73 most of the time. It doubles as 20mm (clear image zoom 1.2x) and 24mm ( apsc mode), such an execellent value lens. Il wait for the sigma 24 1.4 dg dn to upgrade on that

Man I definitely want that 24mm...its so legit...but that Sigma might be a cop tho for vlogging.

If you can get a deal on the 24mm, it might be worth it... Since we are with the A7 III, I want my moneys worth though...
facts, that's why I had to have one
