    Great job, Terry, as always. I was in NY 2 days ago. My goal was to get the A7RV and the 50mm 1.4. BandH only had the 50mm 1.2, so I had to get it. This is my 1st GM lens. What's funny is I traded an A7iv and rx100 vii and still left $4000.00 🤔in that store. I would have spent more, but they were closing shortly after I got there.

I have the A7RV and I am looking at the 50mm f1.4 GM and the f1.2 GM. Having watched a number of reviews I'm confused. Would you say that both lenses would be equally as sharp on the A7RV? I was waiting for this drop. Was looking into the Sigma 50mm 1.4 cause I only have a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens and I have been doing more portrait work lately and realized I need a 50mm. I love the price of the Sigma but hate there is no breathing compensation (for video). Sucks that I cant use the entire potential of the A7IV. So for only $450 more I think the Sony 50 f1.4 is the best choice because I want all the features of having a 1st party lens but I don't want to pay that ridiculously high price the other sony GMs cost. The difference between the 1.2 and 1.4 are not that big to me. looks like its time to sell my ZV1 and other things to get it haha

    Great video Terry. I own the Sony 1.4 and it is excellent. That said, cell phone camera's are getting so good that when I take a photo with my Sony A7RV, my goal is how can I set my photos apart from a "great" cell phone image or at least take a photo a cell phone just can't match. I will be keeping my Sony 50mm 1.4 to use when traveling, but I want to get a 1.2 for that unmatched one of a kind look a cell camera can never get.

    You can equalize the bokeh by either taking a half a step close with the 1.4 of just going into Lightroom with the specific picture you want to print or use for advertising and making your subject and un-sharpen the image and taking down the clarity just a little to match the 1.2. If you want to go a little crazy to suit your taste, then you can at your heart’s content! 😁

  • @evenhandedcommentor6102
    @evenhandedcommentor6102 4 месяца назад

    Thank you for showing the difference in light gathering ability between these two lenses. You are the only reviewer I've seen who did that. Not even Mr Nerdy, Gerald Undone, did that for us.
    So, why is that important? As someone who wants to use a 50mm for "landscape" astrophotography (capture some feature on the ground with the milky way overhead), a fast lens is highly desirable. Not just any fast lens as it needs to be good in the corners too, so that the stars don't get badly distorted or out of focus. But just like those who want the best bokeh, or the best subject separation, the widest aperture is great for star shooters because...more light = better stars. For the same shutter speed, you can use a lower ISO with a wider aperture. And for landscape astro, you are shutter speed limited because the earth is rotating and the stars elongate as the seconds tick by. The higher the focal length of the lens, the quicker the elongation happens and the more you want a fast aperture lens. A 14mm lens...you can get away with a slow f2.8 aperture. At 50mm, you need the fastest aperture lens you can afford.
    So, I saw a comment on this topic on a photography forum where someone claimed the 50 f1.2 was 2/3's of a stop faster than the f1.4. I thought wow, that's better than the implied half stop difference between 1.2 and 1.4. But here you demonstrated it was only a 1/3 stop difference. So, 2/3's of a stop would make me think maybe the f1.2 was worth the extra cost, but 1/3 of a stop...hard to justify that much extra money unless I can get a deal on a used lens. The f1.2 is selling used at a bigger discount than the f1.4 now, but it's still several hundred more.

  • @rickymcc9072
    @rickymcc9072 Год назад +1

    From my perspective it's a nobrainer - the GM f1.4 is arguably just as good as the older f1.2 in practical real world use situations, but is usefully more compact and cheaper (that should read "very slightly better value" 'cus it isn't cheap).
    USA pricing is considerably better than here in Europe or the UK. In US a $700 discount saves 35%. Online in UK best I can source a f1.2 for is currently £1,659 but the newer f1.4 current best is £1,429 ie saving just £230 or circa 14%. And that's a seriously discounted grey import price! If you look at regular retail pricing (effectively a quasi cartel enforced unofficially by Sony UK) then a f1.2 costs £2,099 vs £1,499 (via WEX a major UK supplier). That's about a 28% saving, but £1,499 equates to about $1,865 at current market exchange rates. So your US price of circa $1300 is about $565 less than 'cartel retail ' or a discount of around 30%.
    So not wishing to get 'mugged' as an early adopter, I will wait for now, but probably pick up GM f1.4 eventually, once world recessionary pain kicks in and effectively forces Sony to sell for a little less in UK.
    I still remember when the acclaimed Sony 24mm GM f1.4 launched nearly 4 years ago. UK price was about £1,550 (from memory). I bought a photo show discounted copy in 2019 at circa £1.340. Today that sells at retail £1,299 (WEX) or £819 from my preferred grey importer! So you can see, unless desperate to be first to own, it pays to wait and let the market come to you. I fully expect to eventually buy for circa £1,000 or $1250, or at least your $1300 equivalent.

    This demonstrates the point of diminishing returns. Sony could have only come out with an F1.2, there are not a ton of great F1.2's out there, but then you see how it costs 1.5x the F1.4. It has its place but like you said it does 96% what the cheaper lens does.

    Other than the form factor of F1.4 being smaller and lighter everything else is definitely better with F1.2. Yes, differences might be very small but there’s no doubt that you get better bokeh, lower aperture, faster auto focus and sharper image quality in my mind. In other words, yes F1.2 is almost 50% more expensive than F1.4 but If you already own F1.2 or buy one, you will not miss having F1.4 except for the form factor.

    • @promanstyle9252
      @promanstyle9252 Год назад

      @@smallbizdigitalmedia I think it depends on what kind of podcasting you are doing. Is it going to be outdoors with camera being on gimbal or held by hand most of the time? If so F1.4 might be easier due to the form factor. However, if you mainly do the podcast indoors with camera being mounted on a tripod or in a stationary position, I would actually get F1.2 because it’s a brighter lens although the difference is only half a stop of light. Also both F1.4 and F1.2 are not immune to focus breathing so there’s no difference there.

    Why did you only compare the 50mm F1.2 at F1.2 to the 50mm F1.4? If you shoot at F1.4 with the 50F1.2 it is sharper than the 50F1.4 and has a perfekt Bokeh with round lights. For me it's not the Bokeh at F1.2, but the quality at F1.4 which I prefer at the 50mm F1.2 to the new 50mm F1.4!!!

    • @SilatShooter
      @SilatShooter 11 месяцев назад

      Understand your point, and guessing you're on point. But having f1.2 and shooting at f1.4 goes against the main reason for buying a f1.2 in my mind. And if shooting at f1.4 is preferred, I would personally want the weight savings, smaller size and lower cost. But if I had the f1.2 I wouldn't sell it for the f1.4. I tried both and went with the f1.4 but I did see a difference in background blur in favor of the f1.2, so it's still calling me like moths to a shiny light.

      I agreed to you, that the difference between f1.2 and f1.4 is not very big, but you have a little bit more speed, a slightly softer Bokeh and at f1.4 a slightly better Image quality. BUT: I bought the 50f1.2 last year! If I have had the possibility to choose, I probably would have bought the 50f1.4 because of the price, the light er weight and the 67mm filter sitze.
      On the other hand:
      I do NOT shoot always with the maximum open apeture for commercial products because you get the sharpest results with the apeture closed for 1 or 2 stops. And the 50f1.2 performs better as the 50f1.4 at f1.4 or f1.8. That's what I meant by comparing both lenses at the SAME apeture!

Unless you're just doing portraits or product shots nonstop, then what is the point??????.......people want to see a little bit of the background to provide some kinda sense of realism and of the surrounding environment. Buy lenses based on your shooting style and not off of lowest apertures or latest tech stats/reviews.
