Dude, this review was the most helpful out of 10+ reviews I’ve watched so far comparing these two lenses! I’ve been leaning toward getting the 24mm f1.4, but so many reviews felt like they were pushing me to save $500 because the difference is almost nothing..... but you showed me that the difference is huge on the 1.4 vs 1.8! I’m done deciding now. Getting the 24mm thanks to you!

Great review Terry. What sony lens would you recommend for video to shoot stationary cars, the interior and exterior and some nice slow motion? Which lens would do all that?
It's good to *finally* see someone do real-world side-by-side comparisons of the field-of-view look (especially like at 04:24) to illustrate the differences between these two lenses. Thanks for the great content! One tip: with AF tests, moving side-to-side is just testing the AF tracking, not the focus motor. Try running at the camera or away from it to really see if the motors can keep up! :-)
Best comparaison so far . Thx. Looking to pick one of those to cover night wedding ceremony on gimbal. What would you choose if you only have to pick one for the night event??
Thanks for this video. I'm just thinking about to buys one of these lenses (mainly for landscapes and traveling). I think the 20mm is not bad, a good working tool, but in my eyes it doesn't have this magical look of the 24mm 1.4. Greetings from your new channel memeber from Germany :)
It’s a tough call man. Sony sent me the 24mm to use for a bit, and I fell in love with it. That being said, the 20mm would be a bit better for my vlogging content 🤔
So using 20mm on Sony a7siii actually becomes better than 24. We get 1.13 crop in active stab so 20 becomes 22.6 on the top of that if you shoot in 4K 120 you get a small crop of 1.1 that’s brings the 20mm to 24.86 so why not get the 20mm and save a few bucks. On the stills sides it still 20mm unless you clear image zoom and make it 40mm :) I think it’s a good buy with Sony a7siii or FX3.
My first visit in your channel and I have to say that I am impressed! I HATE how most people these days try to make you sit through a vLog before they get to the review! You got straight to business and I appreciate that! I cover race cars, vLog and I do tutorials but NEVER mix a vLog into a non vLog! Everyone is trying to be Casey Neistat 🤦♂️. Great video and comparison. I don't shoot video and prefer that crazy wide, almost awkward visual that 20mm brings to landscape or city photography. It uplifts a photograph into artwork. That's why I chose the 20mm.
I have to agree.. i prefer the 24mm look for vlog. Im here to listen to your content.. not be distracted by stuff in the bkground.. IMHO. Good info. Thanks.
Nice review! Got me a 24mm GM! Was trying to decide between 24 GM or the 24 Sigma art. I have 20 2.8 from Tamron but haven’t got a chance to use it yet. Traveling next month and I am going to bring my tamron 20 and 24 GM. Excited!
Amazing comparison. Thanks so much. Only that during the footage of comparing the AF I was confused about why the 24mm had a wider fov than 20mm, at least it seemed so!
Hi Terry, I have A7riii with sony 85 1.8, I need one prime lens that I can use for traveling, landscape, in room shots. Plz suggest if 20mm is the right choice. Thanx
If your doing interior as well, the 20mm is going to be the better option. Also for Landscape, especially with the Riii, the wide angle gives you more flexibility and your not using the wider aperture for either case. Save the money and add the 20mm
Your channel popped up for the first time for me. Really useful comparison! I like the 24mm for environmental stills portraits for all the reasons you mentioned liking it for vlogging. Thanks!
NICE. I kinda want to hear you sing the whole song now. I think the 24mm really out shines the 20mm in Astrophotography but other than that I don't see there is that big of a difference image quality wise
Thanks. Surprisingly there's not much videps comparing the vlogging look the way you did that. Personally I'm going for the 24mm as well. The wider focal length doesn't seem to make too much of a difference, but the better bokeh is definitely noticable. And the extra stops I'll get in low light makes it a winner
TerryWarfield added some zooms for my a6600 to go w/ my 2 primes. Had to sell some stuff, but I added a Sony 18-105 f4 for all around, & sigma 100-400 w/ mc-11 for moon and wildlife.

Including cashback I just got the 20mm for £625 which is just a bargain. I couldn't justify any reason to go for the 24mm as I rarely shoot at f1.4 anyway. 99% of my photography is stills and when I want a landscape lens, the 20mm is it for me. I'll be shooting it at f11 or higher anyway. Question: in the school parking lot testing, did you reverse the two lenses? The latter part of that series was a lot wider than the first part.
Superb mate !!! I have the 24mm GM lens and have the 20 in the basket but with my new A7C I need to work out how to set AF properly lol Love your videos!
Did you film this on the on the A6300 then? The look would of course be very different on the full frame A7III. p.s you forgot to mention "Gangster Mode" in this video about the GM lens ;)
Shout-out from Macedonia, OH - These two are my favorites (with the 30mm f/1.8 completing the trinity), but the 24GM is my all-time - just finished my first documentary almost entirely on the 24GM - f/1.4 makes it so versatile.
I might have missed you say it but when you were vlog holding the camera/lens at arms length, were you holding the camera out on like a small tripod with extra reach or were you holding it on the lens?
Having seen this video saves me a grand+ as I have the best of both focal lengths with the Tamron 17-28 f2.8. Although I'd love to have either one I don't see a significant improvement that justifies an upgrade. Although probably great for photo, the building in the background showed a lot of focus breathing on the 24.
On your G master high horse I see. Kidding lol. Once I sell this 16-35 f4 I will grab the 20. 24 just seems too “in between” and expensive for me at this point. The 20 and 85 mm will complete my arsenal .... for now.
Haha bro real talk, if it was out when I bought the GM, I would have grabbed the 20mm and saved that 500. But now that I have it, ain't no goin back playa!
TerryWarfield 🤣 yea I feel that, you already said RIP to the cash. I get it! I’m sure there’s nothing like having that flashy orange on the side, problem is those lenses are showing their age being slower in some focusing and showing fringing where newer lenses aren’t. That G vs Gmaster gap is closing fast!
Dope video,!! I love my 24mm, I do street photography!! And this lens does everything for me!! I use it with my a7riii and image quality is very sharp!!
Man, I was on the fences and couldn't decide. I ended up going with 24 G master because of this comparison. Now my facial imperfections show up x20 more than my mirror. Even my samsung s20 in 4k doesn't make me look like this. Any way to make this less noticeable on my sony camera? thanks again for video.. stay grindin'
good informative video! I don't see enough difference in the wooded background bokeh to justify the extra weight and expense of the 24mm, but the angle of view is different and a matter of taste too. thanks for the comparison!
Very well done bro, fantastic that you tested the auto focus, aswell as the examples. Maybe you can do a video of how it functions on the Aps-c cameras for some of us that have both full and crop sensor Sony’s. 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
@@TerryWarfield so I went back and forth back and forth. After everything, what pushed me over the edge was the 1.4 of the 24mm. The coating of the glass and how the bokeh in the background looked. I appreciate your af test the most too. Pulled the trigger ordered one. It arrives today. Looking forward to using it for work on Friday. We’ll see what happens!
A truly excellent review that provided the best comparison I’ve yet seen between these lenses. The video has been extremely helpful. I have the GM lens, but wondered about the 20mm. Both have their great features as you’ve said. Thanks.
extra info: the z master lenses have 11 blades in the aperture which give rounder bokeh. I've seen prime lenses with 9 but I've seen cheaper lenses with 7.
7:13: White woman in background walking away as inconspicuously as possible, thinking: "WTF this guy doin' over there?!? OK, just don't look! Don't draw attention! Just walk away!!!" :D
NIce review and thanks for this. Conundrum of can't go wrong with either one. For me I'll take the 20mm and the big $ savings. But wow that bokeh of the 1.4 is pretty amazing too.
Great comparison. the AF test I think the 20mm won. I take more astrophotography shots than anything else and have decided on the 20mm to buy, but will be going for the 24mm GM early next year as well.
I’ve used the 20mm a lot for video on the S3. The extra 4mm you get is nice to make up for the crop from active stabilization.

Hey Terry, awesome video. I just bought the a7c today to go with my a7siii and zv-1, trying to decide which lens - the 20 G or the 24 GM.
What about using them with focus breathing compensation and active stabilization on a7iv? Is the 20 better option since the crop needed?
It makes it have the perfect 24mm look he was arguing works best aside from the .4mm aperture difference wide open

Your test showed the 24mm wider than the 20mm. Did you have this reversed?
Yep smh
love the video! I can't decide between 24mm to 20mm. My short arms vs beautiful bokeh
Great video and review, exactly what I was looking for
Glad to hear that!
Really really through review, thanks so much Terry!
thanks for watching!
Dude, to be honest, the hell with the review. Best shape fella on utube !!!
Dope review!✊ This was one of the best comparisons I've seen on these lenses 🔥
Thanks Adrian!
Up in here!
Solid comparison! 🔥
Thanks my guy!
@@TerryWarfield yezzr!
Awesome Video I just got the lense used from B& H for 1000$ and pre ordered the AS73!
good informative video! I don't see enough difference in the wooded background bokeh to justify the extra weight and expense of the 24mm, but the angle of view is different and a matter of taste too. thanks for the comparison!
Just got the 20mm, primarily because of focal length
Very well done bro, fantastic that you tested the auto focus, aswell as the examples. Maybe you can do a video of how it functions on the Aps-c cameras for some of us that have both full and crop sensor Sony’s. 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Nice comparison man! Thx!
great video. I can't decide which to get.
What are you torn on?
@@TerryWarfield so I went back and forth back and forth. After everything, what pushed me over the edge was the 1.4 of the 24mm. The coating of the glass and how the bokeh in the background looked. I appreciate your af test the most too. Pulled the trigger ordered one. It arrives today. Looking forward to using it for work on Friday. We’ll see what happens!
24 looks best to me. I use an a5100 and shoot my vlog vid at 16mm (24mm equiv) ... I'd like to get the Sigma 16mm but not in the budget at this time.
Your video helped me decide. 20mm f1.8 is winner for me. Thanks man, awesome review!
A truly excellent review that provided the best comparison I’ve yet seen between these lenses. The video has been extremely helpful. I have the GM lens, but wondered about the 20mm. Both have their great features as you’ve said. Thanks.
uhhh why is your 24 wider than the 20?
Fantastic review, my dude. Specifically what I was looking for. Also, sub’d.
24mm is just an all time great lens in the Sony system. It's worth the extra price as a long term investment
Great content dude thanks for sharing this
Exactly the video I was looking for, thank you.
extra info: the z master lenses have 11 blades in the aperture which give rounder bokeh. I've seen prime lenses with 9 but I've seen cheaper lenses with 7.
Good review, mate, thanks!
Great video. Much love from southafrica

White woman in background walking away as inconspicuously as possible, thinking:
"WTF this guy doin' over there?!? OK, just don't look! Don't draw attention! Just walk away!!!" :D
Haha
I know that is not what she is thinking! lol
Great video... that's how you review lens. I'm going with the 24mm. Thank you.
NIce review and thanks for this. Conundrum of can't go wrong with either one. For me I'll take the 20mm and the big $ savings. But wow that bokeh of the 1.4 is pretty amazing too.
Very good review and comparison!
thanks so much!
Terry let me hold that 24mm bro 😂. Good video bro.
We can trade. Send me your a7iii bro
@@TerryWarfield LMAO
Great comparison. the AF test I think the 20mm won. I take more astrophotography shots than anything else and have decided on the 20mm to buy, but will be going for the 24mm GM early next year as well.
