Honestly the best review of a lens I have ever seen. Seeing the real world use was great and I found myself watching the whole vlog even though I haven’t watched you before!

My wife and I are on the outdoors quite often and I’m looking for a native lens for my sony a7iv. You sir, have convince me to go this route, I loved everything about it.
Dude I been using an old tamron 17-28 on my a7iii for years. Super miss bokeh life and been looking at this lens. You just sold me brah. Thanks for the video
I know you’ve graded this but wow, you’ve got this lens looking absolutely epic. Tons of character but also crispness, and the subject separation at 1.8 is amazing for a 20mm. Massive effort for this video and the peak was beautiful. Great work.
I picked up the Sony a7c and the 20mm 1.8 ... can't wait to use this bad boy ! The kit balances with no problem at all on a Feiyutech G6 Max without a sweat
the 20mm G is my favorite video lens. I never thought of using it because I had a 24mm GM, but a good friend let me try it out and I absolutely loved it ever since
One disadvantage in my opinion is the crop you get when using active stabilisation for the a7s iii, you end up with a 22mm focal length ( which is not too tight but sometimes it is not wide enough

Best content that i have seen in a long time!!!!!! Dunna keep it up!!!!! I'm tired of the same reviews that Gerald, Matti and others do. they only do a quick test and shoot around their studio..... you actually took the time to go out and shoot something awesome with the lens and then talk about the performance in a real world situation!!!!
I love this lens. Great for landscape and environmental style photography. It’s close enough to 24mm that you can do a slight crop on the r series to get a 24mm field of view with plenty of detail.
Awesome review, mate. I own this lens for a couple of weeks now and truly love it on my A7IV. It's built like a GM, lightweight, razor sharp, not too wide and becomes a 30mm 2.7 with 14mp in crop mode. I wish Sony would make more G primes like this. Maybe a new 50mm 1.8 🤤
I flew out to Calgary a few years back - The Canadian Rockies were epic! Initially wanted a review for the Sony 20mm f1.8 G, the scenery was such a bonus! Excellent job.
Came for the lens review, ended up staying and watching great vlog and story. I'm definetly buying this lens, and man, what a beautiful way to recommend lens. By far the best review for me. Thank you and keep it up
Killer shots man! When you were hand held, was active stabilization turned on? All the shots look super steady, but I expected it to be less wide than what you got.
I really really really enjoyed this video. It's on another Level. The way you actually show the capability of the lense and camera while keeping us entertain is what keep this type of review better than the rest that we found out here in RUclips. Thank you so much 😉😉😉
I have this lens. Love it! I use it on my A7III for astro and for landscapes. You can crop to 24mm easily without losing a ton of resolution, and the compact size is amazing.
Ultrawide with bokeh is where it's at. Perfect vlog, indoor, landscape, astro lens. Wide and fast, good AF, quiet, compact and lightweight! Ticks all the boxes for me.
Damn. You gave justice to the beautiful view you have there. I'm also using the 16-35 f2.8 GM for all my vlogs but there are times that I wish it is small and light. I would love to try the 20mm but I currently own the 24mm and I feel like it is my most versatile lens for "Photography". For vlogging though I feel that 24mm is tight at arms lenght even with a small tripod. This video makes me wanna get the 20mm immediately hahaha
Been subscribed for a while but I just rediscovered why. Three video wormhole in now. Your vids are easily the most engaging photography based vlog/reviews I’ve seen.
The lens hasn't left my camera body since I got it around a month or so ago. Just a hobbyist taking photos of the family, but it's such a nice lens to use and gives such awesome results even on the ancient a7rII body.
This lens was my first and I absolutely love it. Just worked out as it was releasing, I was getting my first full frame mirrorless and wanted a lens for travel as well as live streaming. It's perfect for both, but I just picked up a 35mm to try something new 😅. Glad you're enjoying it too! Awesome video as always, thanks for the content!
The amount of effort to record this vlog is surreal. How many times you went back and forward to get those shots???? Love it!! I have to subscribe now ❤️❤️
Great video, watched it a few times.lots of effort you put in with the static shots, I usually go handheld for vlogging, although in NYC I wouldn’t leave my camera setup! Maybe you used the zoom at around 5:12? Hard to tell. Great video!
The Sony 20mm is my favorite astrophotography lens as of late and I've been working on integrating it into my landscape photography more and more. Great, sharp little lens for the price.
Love you videos and how u show it with real world vlogging examples. Just a doubt. For casual vlogging which will be better Sony 14mm GM or 20mm f1.8G. Please reply at d earliest.thanks
We just got this lens in the mail today for our first full frame camera (A7C). Now we feel much better about buying it. Just subscribed to your channel as well 👍☺️
Great video Dunna! I can see the use of this lens for a landscape photographer and some specific video use. But I've tried it out myself on my Sony A7 IV and when using both active steadyshot and focus breathing compensation, this lens is at least 25mm. When comparing the focal lengths with my Sony 16-35mm f4, I noticed that the 20mm 1,8 G is wider than the 16-35 when set to 20mm. So the actual focal length is around 19mm, that is when active steadyshot is turned off, as well as focus breathing compensation off. All the cropping that comes with Sonys great new stabilization and breathing comp makes it bad (too tight) for vlogging in my opinion. Better of with a Tamron 17-28mm f2,8 instead of it for that case. The distortion when photographing people isn't nice either with the 20mm. It's a lot easier to compose and get a natural look with a 24mm when shooting people. So I sent the 20mm 1,8 G back to the shop. Also, I'm selling my Sony 16-35mm f4 though, to only roll with the Tamron 17-28mm f2,8. If I am to grab myself a wide angle prime, then it would be the 24mm f1,4 GM. The difference in bokeh between it and the 20mm f1,8 G is well worth it from what I've seen. And a lot of the time, I end up shooting at 24mm with the Tamron 17-28mm.
I’d probably go for the 20mm just because 24 can be a biiiiiittt to tight at times. I could probably get by with it because of my long arms, but if you add active stabilization crop or don’t have long arms, that extra width definitely comes in handy.
@@dunnadidit thank you for your fast reply …. I already have the 24mm, I was pretty undecided at the time of purchase. Since I also have a 24-70 2.8 zoom (which I use most of the time) the 20mm might have been the better (and cheaper:-) choice and would have made it more versatile.
Also recently picked up this lens, but was kinda regretting not going for a zoom, and haven't used it much (it's been a month), but after seeing this I feel like I gotta take it out for a spin! Great video, looks amazing out there!!
Awesome video! I watched the whole thing! I just got my Lens but am a newbie so its all been a bit of a steep learning curve. Hope it matches up well with my ZV E 1 Have a great day!
Just got mine last week and used it the first time for some street photography. Never used a lens this wide, it was cool and challenging. I’m new to it all so learning different focal lengths is such a interesting thing. The first time I looked through my viewfinder it’s hard to believe how much is in frame lol
Ok, I am so new to this world of lenses and whatnot. I do vlogs and then I will film cars, motorcycles, reviews, b-roll, etc...This lens seems perfect for the way I vlog, would a 24-70mm be a solid all-around lens for filming the other content?
Help me understand the slow zoom on the clip at 3:30. Intentional? What is it meant to achieve? Update* Halfway in and the majority of shots do the same. Interesting 🤔
I really enjoy having this lens. I just love introducing some distortion into my photography from time to time - it's a nice visual change from the 35 or 50 that we see a lot in environmental portraiture or photojournalistic type of stuff. Sometimes it's just as effective at drawing attention to a subject as a shallow depth of field from a different focal length.
Thanks a ton! I am using the new freewell magnetic VND system. Unfortunately I didn’t have the right size or a single step up ring so I ended up having to use multiple step up rings. I think that hurt me a bit and why every once in a while there’s just a slight peek of vignette.
Haha 😂 I don’t talk about that much around here, kind of keep those two lives separate. But I’m really glad that you liked the audio! Means a lot coming from you!
hey man! thanks for this review and real world testing of the lens. just so you know out of all the videos comparing the 20mm f1.8 vs 24mm f1.4, this video won me over to the 20mm. ;)
I see that this lens is on the new supported lenses list for A7 iv focus breathing correction. I guess that resolves your issue with that, at least going forward for new cameras that likely will support that feature
Love the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8mm! Perfect balance between size and capability, the zoom range allows for more creative composing, specially of B-Roll. It’s only 50g heavier than the 20mm (compared to the 16-35mm which is about 300g heavier)
I look Tamron 17-28 and Sony 20. Can't decide what to buy and my choice was sony because it's f/1.8 and it's sharper than Tamron. Sony not 20 mm, before 18.5-19mm
Well, thank you for this excellent review, man. You really helped me, and I also just enjoyed to watch. You're inspiring. Brilliant job! Hello from the Swiss mountains
getting ready to get this lens for my newly acquired a7iv. Just saw your con about focus breathing but noticed that this lens is on the list of supported lenses for the focus breathing compensation available on the a7iv....now I gotta go see if there are videos that show how good it works on the 20mm
Yup! You’ll get a little crop in but you will have no focus breathing con if you turn that feature on! So awesome!! I really hope I get a firmware update that includes breathing comp for my Fx3 and a1
Great video! That is such a great hike, I visited Kananaskis on my week trip to Alberta 2 years back. If you haven't yet check out King's Creek Ridge hike, little further south.
Nice video on the lens Dunna! May I know what step-up ring and ND filter you used for your vlog here? Want to also have the similar result as well using the lens.
@@dunnadidit I saw the link of the magnetic filters on the description of this video so I assume you’re using the 67-82 step up ring for it right? Do you think the 82mm Peter Mckinnon VND will work well on this? I plan to purchase that since I’ll also be getting a used 24-70 2.8 GM lens so I can use it for both lens. Just don’t know which stops I would go for. The 2-5 or the 6-9 considering that I’ll used the 1.8 aperture max. What would you suggest?
There is a reason that high end lens makers like Zeiss don't go wider than 18, I have just purchased the 20 1.8 and it is a magical lens, I mostly use it on my 6600 but it was great even on my 61 megapixel R4
Indeed I could NOT see where you used the 70-200mm BUT past the first few shots I just sat back and enjoyed the show lol 😂 Great video as always Dunna! A1 man! 💯
Thank you so much for this video. I just purchased the Sony A7iv + Sony 20mm F1.8 to start my journey on learning to vlog and make better footages for our adventure channel. However, we don't usually film ourselves, so the whole selfie stick thing is brand new to us. Can you please share what setup you use for filming yourself while on the hike? Do you just hold the camera body at arms length? Or do you have a special tripod or selfie stick (I would think it can be too heavy to use a stick) for your camera? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Love you videos and how u show it with real world vlogging examples. Just a doubt. For casual vlogging which will be better Sony 14mm GM or 20mm f1.8G. Please reply at d earliest.thanks
Interesting so see a video where you include the planning around it, like the 2:00 am-getup. For me, who is getting a little more serious about landscape photography, that is quite valuable inspiration. Also nice to see that we also share an interest in freshly ground, handfiltered coffee. :)
LOVED this video. I do a lot of hiking in Canmore and Banff National Park as well. I've done Ha Ling too, with a bunch of friends. Fantastic B roll! That valley shot was KILLER!!! (Off-topic, ...but you also remind me of one of my Pastors because you look and sound like his twin brother, haha). I like people who can enjoy a good cup of coffee! Great video. (P.S. I just emailed you a PDF of one of my hikes too, take care.)
Hey can you do a video showing how you filmed this? What tripod did you use to set up those shots so quickly? How do you carry the camera while you hike? Great video!
I’m thinking of buying either the Sony G 20mm F/1.8 or Sony GM 14mm F/1.8. Not sure which one to go towards. I have a Sony A7RIII. I heard GM are better on the R series? Is this true?
The clip taken with the 70-200 has to be the one with the rocks and lake and Ekshaw in the back round. That’s way to compressed to be 20 mm…. Excellent. Video by the way!
I live in Ontario. But a few years of the 15 years I spent trucking was Toronto to Vancouver every two weeks…. I’ve been through there once or twice…. Enough to be sick of driving through the mountains. Now I’d love nothing more than to go back and hike and document it all on my RUclips channel (the one I actually post under. Not this one) but I didn’t ever care to drive the 3000 km to get there ever again….
I would love to see your opinion about what the following lenses best for: Sony 35mm Sony 20mm Sony 24mm I’m choosing one lens for mostly videography in all situations and not sure what to pick. I also don’t know if I should pick a zoom lens but let me say that I want to pick the cheapest among them to start my RUclips channel. I have Sony A7c
Sony 20mm F1.8 G Sony 35mm f1.8 Sony 24mm f1.4 GM Those would be my picks. But like you said, a zoom lens might cover you, it’s all up to you and your workflow. You could go with the 16-35 GM, have top quality, and be covered in one lens.
Hi I'm back, wish that I'd taken my new Sony 20mm f1.8 G lens up on the Banff Gondola - didn't own it when I visited obviously, but loved taking in the fantastic views from the top and love this lens.

hey man! thanks for this review and real world testing of the lens. just so you know out of all the videos comparing the 20mm f1.8 vs 24mm f1.4, this video won me over to the 20mm. ;)
I see that this lens is on the new supported lenses list for A7 iv focus breathing correction. I guess that resolves your issue with that, at least going forward for new cameras that likely will support that feature
Yeah I’m hoping they do a firmware update that puts focus breathing comp on my a1
Great video! Love the hike. That shot of you sitting at the top eating Oreos is stopped way down right? Love that shot.
such a workout going back for the camera in every shot,,,great review man
Haha for real!
Love the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8mm! Perfect balance between size and capability, the zoom range allows for more creative composing, specially of B-Roll. It’s only 50g heavier than the 20mm (compared to the 16-35mm which is about 300g heavier)
Truth!
I look Tamron 17-28 and Sony 20. Can't decide what to buy and my choice was sony because it's f/1.8 and it's sharper than Tamron. Sony not 20 mm, before 18.5-19mm
Fantastic! Just the comparison I was looking for! What did you do for image stabilization? Dynamic active? Catalyst?
Great view, nice review.
Loving the lens already.
Couldn't find the 70-200 shot either.
Thanks a ton!!
10:20 what a gorgeous shot.
Cool video Dunna. Thank you. I also own the 20mm 1.8 and use it frequently on my a7s3 and a7c.
Nice!
Well, thank you for this excellent review, man. You really helped me, and I also just enjoyed to watch. You're inspiring. Brilliant job! Hello from the Swiss mountains
Thank you so much!!
getting ready to get this lens for my newly acquired a7iv.
I really hope I get a firmware update that includes breathing comp for my Fx3 and a1
@@dunnadidit good to know, thank you!
I love the Sony APS-C setup for hiking...that's one major reason why I doubt my need for a full frame, even for portraits. Good video!
Great video! That is such a great hike, I visited Kananaskis on my week trip to Alberta 2 years back. If you haven't yet check out King's Creek Ridge hike, little further south.
2:00 at 70mm? 🤔 stunning video as usual, you rock the casbah!
Nope 😜 thanks so much!
Such a great video Dunna , loved your color grading and you are a great vlogger! ❤️
Thanks a ton!!
Awesome video Dunna, really made me fall in love with the lens, and your effort to do such videos ...
Thanks for watching!!
Nice video on the lens Dunna! May I know what step-up ring and ND filter you used for your vlog here? Want to also have the similar result as well using the lens.
I use freewell step up rings and probably used freewell magnetic filters during this video!
Yup! I would probably go 2-5 to start with, you can always stop down a bit if you need to.
@@dunnadidit Ok! Thanks Dunna for responding to my questions! Really appreciate the help. :)
No problem!
Man I didn’t find the 70-200 shot lol 😂 I am tempted by this lens. I love my Tamron 17-28mm. Great video!
Yeah the Tamron is solid too! And you get a bit of zoom at pretty close to the same size. The 20mm image is just SOOOO crispy and the f1.8 is so nice.
Wow! I think you hit the sweet spot. I felt like it had the perfect wide angle for vlogging . Great video Dunna 👍🏼
There is a reason that high end lens makers like Zeiss don't go wider than 18, I have just purchased the 20 1.8 and it is a magical lens, I mostly use it on my 6600 but it was great even on my 61 megapixel R4
some people reported some focusing noise. mine does it when going from close to far and viceversa. anyone else experienced it? wasn't expecting that
I don't have any issue with focus noise.
Amazing tour in to the nature☺️
Did you used your Cinematic LUT or something new?
I custom graded this all the way through but used a similar process to the way that I created my custom lut “FLATTERED”
I have a 20mm and really love it. Great film dunna.
That’s great to hear!!!
Indeed I could NOT see where you used the 70-200mm BUT past the first few shots I just sat back and enjoyed the show lol 😂
Great video as always Dunna! A1 man! 💯
Haha 😂 well that’s a good sign! I got you caught up in the vibes!!
This video is visually stunning. You’re also a great vlogger! More vlogs in the future please, Dunna!
Thanks Omar!
Landscape, astro, street shoots... Sharpness like 24mm GM lens, incredible small lightweight lens
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Thank you so much! That’s too funny that I look like him!
Hey can you do a video showing how you filmed this? What tripod did you use to set up those shots so quickly? How do you carry the camera while you hike? Great video!
I’m thinking of buying either the
Sony G 20mm F/1.8 or Sony GM 14mm F/1.8.
Not sure which one to go towards. I have a Sony A7RIII. I heard GM are better on the R series? Is this true?
Really lovely vlog, loving this Sony 20 mm lens. Did you use Sony a7 iii camera for the video?
Thanks so much! No I shot this with the Sony fx3.
Love your work !
Hiking in the rockies is the best !
So I'm curious on your thoughts on the Sony 20mm 1.8 or Tamron 17-28 for video and vlog.
The clip taken with the 70-200 has to be the one with the rocks and lake and Ekshaw in the back round. That’s way to compressed to be 20 mm…. Excellent. Video by the way!
Haha you know the area well!
But yes I know exactly what pullout on highway 1 you were at …. Lol.
I concur :-)))
The colour is really good. What picture profile is that?
SLOG3
Love the format on this one and the views are 🔥
Thank you!!
I would love to see your opinion about what the following lenses best for:
Sony 35mm
Sony 20mm
Sony 24mm
I’m choosing one lens for mostly videography in all situations and not sure what to pick. I also don’t know if I should pick a zoom lens but let me say that I want to pick the cheapest among them to start my RUclips channel. I have Sony A7c
Sony 20mm F1.8 G
Sony 35mm f1.8
Sony 24mm f1.4 GM
Those would be my picks. But like you said, a zoom lens might cover you, it’s all up to you and your workflow. You could go with the 16-35 GM, have top quality, and be covered in one lens.
@@dunnadidit
16-35 😣 maybe someday but too expensive for me now 😆.
Any cheaper zoom lens you would suggest?
@@dunnadidit
By the way, the reason that makes me think of zoom lens is the dramatic shots I may need when I shoot skits videos
Tamron 17-28 is a great alternative!
@@dunnadidit
Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it
Hi I'm back, wish that I'd taken my new Sony 20mm f1.8 G lens up on the Banff Gondola - didn't own it when I visited obviously, but loved taking in the fantastic views from the top and love this lens.
Thanks for the video. May I ask which lens did you use for the talking head intro of this video?
