Hi i bought this lens Sony 20mm f/1.8 G, what's a good number three lens besides the FE 28-70 kit lens for my Sony A7IV?
are you using a ND filter also?
@@yartriesthis it depends on what you do, but I would say a 35mm or 50mm. The 35mm f1.8 is pretty great, plus its small and affordable.
is the ASP-C equilvant of the 20mm the Sony - E 11mm F1.8 APS-C ultra-wide-angle prime lens - Black? 11mm*1.5?
I just got this lens in March 2023. So far I love it. Love the tiny size coming from the Sigma 20mm f1.4 ART that was huge. This thing is the size of a kit lens. It will always be in my camera bag.
Great review. I've had this lens for about 18 months and it is one of my favorites. I use it for astro and it is great for that. I travel for most of my photography and really appreciate its compact size and light weight. In terms of a pairing, I would suggest the new Sony 20-70 f/4 G. It is also an amazingly sharp lens and I find it covers 90 percent of daylight situations. The added width (compared to a 24-70 or 28-75) is really useful. It is also quite light and good for travel. If I need more low light capability, I put on the 20mm f/1.8.
i sold my sigma 20mm and i bought Viltrox 16mm f1.8 now im more than happy, really good performer, and surprisingly cheap, Sony has the sharpest 20mm lens on the market, Thanks for video Mark
This was one of my favorite lenses, I dont have anymore but I miss it quite a lot. I think I will try the upcoming Sony 16-25 f2.8 G if it will be the same size as this 20mm.
Thank you so much for this review after watching it i realized that i can return my 35 1.4 GM because i already have the 24-70 GM2 so i ordered this 20mm to pair it with my 24-70 and my sigma 85mm but i think i will also get the 50 1.2 for that exotic Boked look and after that i will get my 70-200 GM 2.. Great Review
Is this lense a good one for streetfotography or can you suggest another one for really really sharp Images by Night?
I am occasionally combating the distortion with this lens, but when in doubt, just take some steps back. I have gotten some pretty immersive photos this way.
Did you recommend it before the Batis 18?
I am considering this lens for its capability. Good overview of this lens. I also have the Laowa 10mm f/2.0 lens for Micro4/3 which is almost the same on Micro4/3.
Hey Mark great video. I’m almost ready to pull the trigger on this lens but have an A7c which doesn’t have breathing compensation. I’m mainly video oriented. Will the focus breathing be a huge issue with this lens? Would love your opinion.
It’s only really noticeable with a locked off shot, when you bring something within macro distance of the lens. I used the lens almost daily, for many months, before I even noticed any breathing and turned the breathing comp on. I wouldn’t even remotely consider it a deal breaker.
@@markwiemels thanks I appreciate you making the time. That’s helped heaps. I was just playing around with my 24 mm 2.8 g and noticed the breathing in it for the first time, only because I was looking for it.
What an absolutely awesome and inspiring video. Thanks Mark! I am getting one.
would this pair well with the 40mm 2.5 on a a7cr for street photography? or would a 16-25 be better option to cover the lower range. ty.
I love my 20mm 1.8 Sony G. I use it on my B Camera (Sony FX30) when shooting weddings and it captures pretty much all my reception room details or ceremony b-roll shots. That 'sweet spot' is perfect for dancing shots too at the end of the night! Thanks for the great vid!
Cool. What lens do you use on your A cam? Just curious.
@@markwiemels Thx for asking! My A Cam is a Sony FX3 and I slapped the Sigma 35mm 1.4 DG DN Art lens on it.
@@firstandlastproductionsllc oh, interesting. Thanks for sharing, the 35 is very well regarded
@@markwiemels And then I also interchange the 35 with my Sony FE 85 1.8 for more DOF, depending on the scene.
@@firstandlastproductionsllcbeautiful
I likey 20 1.8a lot but now I love it even more! Thank you so much for a wonderful detailed review!
Up close and wide is one of my fav perspectives 📸💪
What camera would you choose, the Sony fx3 or the canon r6 mark 2? For documentary/vlog content, I also take pictures occasionally. Great Content.
The FX3, there is a reason that those Sony camera have become so popular for video production. Just be prepared, there is a steep learning curve if switching from Canon.
F 1.8 vs an f 2.8 lens is there much of a difference in low light?
Will I suffer from some vignetting with this lens on my a7siii ?
Thanks, Mark. Just bought the ZV E1. You helped me make my decision on the first lens to buy.
Overheating?😊
Yes! You convinced me!
I wanted to get the Viltrox 16mm f1.8 FE and yes, its a great lens.
But you mentioned so many points, which are important for me:
- almost not distorted
- still quite wide
So, thank you very much, Mark :)
Yes, 20mm tends to be at that wide, but not too wide point. I love the Viltrox 16mm, but it is a true ultra wide.
You are by far the best lens reviewer, I wish you would do a review on the GM line.
Would this be ideal for capturing car content? Drifting/racing cars from close and far distances? Photos and videos?
Yea, it would be good, for somewhat close shots.
I miss your EF-M videos 🙂
Any plans on reviewing the new Tokina EF-M lenses?
Yes, it's hard, those videos don't get views like they used too. I'm trying to think of a way to just dump all of my EF-M knowledge into a video series, or something, even if it's just off the cuff and not produced like my normal videos.
Interesting analysis! I am wondering if you have a preferred crop or aspect ratio (2:1, or 8:5, etc ) when considering the end photo using a wide angle lens? I actually think this would be a good topic for an extended conversation as I have never seen much commentary on the subject.
I should think about that for sure, but I mostly just compose with the full filed of view, then crop in the edit, when I think it improves the image. I do shoot video, with the plan of using letter box to give a "fake anamorphic" look.
I have a 24mm for my youtube setup. Would this work for that? Or would it be too wide?
The video shots of you speaking, are they on 24mm or 20mm?
Both work, this was shot on 13mm aps-c, which is 20mm full frame equivalent field of view.
Mark,
I also really enjoy the 20mm focal length. Have you considered the Viltrox 13mm lens as an apsc option? For those working with apsc systems for cost or weight reasons, it might be one you’d want to explore.
Really interesting that you say that, it's actually the Viltrox 13mm that lead me to buy the Sony 20mm. It's my favourite filed of view now. I plan to compare the Viltrox on APS-C to the Sony on Full Frame, in an upcoming video.
Straight to the point, photos as examples. Nice and professional review. One more sub.
Thanks so much!
Really nice review and sample images mark!
Thanks PJ! These reviews, for me, really give me a chance to work on my composition.
Loving your new lens videos. You're talking about them in such an interesting way. Dope lens, too BTW. I've had this one for a couple years
Thanks! That means a lot, I'm trying to find my way with this channel, in the wake of Canon all but killing off the EF-M mount.
@@markwiemels I feel you. Hopefully you can convince all your Canon loyalists to switch to Sony with you!
Oh that’s a beauty!!
Yes, I'm really liking it.
@@markwiemels I have the 24 GM and I STILL got the 20 just because those extra 4mm are so useful
This is the best review for this lens. Thanks.
Thank you so much.
I’ve watch most of your video on the m50 canon I wanted to know if you can lead me to some wireless mics for the m50 for like podcast out doors
I think I like the Rode wireless go ii the best.
People always said that human eyes are close to 24mm, some say 35mm, some even say 50mm. It is funny because I always see at 20mm. 24mm is not as wide as my natural vision. 16mm is wider than my eye sight and just looks unnatural. 20mm really is the perfect focal length for me.
Me too.
I once tried to look through evf and the second eye was open. 70mm was the focal length that the images overlapped.
67mm filter?
I think at the end I'm going to buy this one instead of the 24mm 2.8. Hope I won't regret my decision when hiking for 10 hours 😅😂
What do you think about this versus the FE 85mm 1.8? how does this stack up against that? Thanks, I'm a newbie, I have the a7iv
When comparing an any 85mm lens to any 20mm lens, it’s really more about which focal length works for you, or your intended purpose. Both great lenses, but really different purposes, so I would focus more on that side of things, find your focal length. Just go on instagram and scan 20mm photos vs 85mm photos, see what look is what you want to achieve.
@@markwiemels That's great advice, thank you for your content. I loved your beginner explanation video on focal length, please keep doing more videos
For 85mm, the sigma 1.4 is much more vibrant and "3d" than the sony 1.8. I don't even care about sharpness but yes, it's sharp even at 1.4, in the center at least.
so lovely analysis
Thanks!
20mm is just film standard in standard 5 lens kit
Indeed the 20 1.8 is a terrific performer. I sold mine in favour of the 16-35 G + 24 1.4 GM because a) I prefer 24 as my go-to low-light & walkaround lens and b) the 16-35 covers any ultra-wide needs plus some pseudo-macro shots at the long end.
Yes, that combo costs a helluva lot more, but I'm also happier with the results.
The 20 is great, it just didn't suit me is all.
I think that's really what it's about, finding the focal lengths that work for you.
How can you say that 24mm is boring? I was considering buying this lens (20mm) but after seeing your images I can definitely see that 24 look so much better. These photos you used in the video look like they were taken on a smartphone.
It’s all personal preference. iPhone is 26mm equivalent, so more similar to 24, but it’s all about what you like, not anyone else.
Realestate Videography? Any good for it?
Yes, for sure, as you can see in the sample photos, great for interior and architecture.
Ok but 15mm is the goldilocks length
It’s a sharp lens but pointless when there is the better Sigma f1.4 version
The Sigma is significantly larger and heavier, I choose the Sony over Sigma. I also prefer the out of focus rendering of the Sony. Having said that, the Sigma is still a fantastic lens.
This lens is much sharper than sigma. the only thing that sigma has advantage is its 1.4 aperture but Sony is sharper and much reliable when it comes to af
@@user-vx4jp8sz3u the lens is sharper than every G Master except for maybe the 50 f1.2, so getting pretty diminishing at that point. I don’t need a slower f1.8 for my needs, the sigma is much nicer for low light and bokeh
@@mjingj higher aperture doesnt mean slower lol. 1.8 by sony is tad faster and sharper than the sigmas and much lighter
@@user-vx4jp8sz3u oh boy, need some reading up I see. F1.4 let’s in nearly twice as much light as f1.8 (2/3 stop), that’s what we say much “faster”. Shallow depth of field and the difference between shooting iso 6400 and iso 10,000 or iso 1600 vs iso 2500
Bro, Have you read my email?
The Best Sony Lens Yet? No.
I love mine - that's all I got to say about it. I have it on my a6600.
Yes, I have had a few people say they really like it on the crop cameras!
Hey Mark, check your email! Justus L :)
I will, thanks for the heads up.
