Totally agree with your points. Love my 20mm. I went with this over the 24gm. Small , light, sharp, focus it’s all great in this lens. I have to say, this lens and my 28 f2 probably get the most use for my personal work. Great channel man!
Dude you are so underrated you should have a lot more subscribers. After all my research I finally bought this lens for all the reasons you mentioned I will pair it with my A7IV for landscape and long exposure photography. Great job and keep doing what you’re doing. Sub
Wow thanks man! That means a lot, much appreciated! I'd love to get my hands on the a7iv! To be honest I would have gone for that over the a7siii but it wasn't out at the time, just for it's hybrid capabilities. The a7siii is amazing though! Thanks again and enjoy the pairing!
You just listed all the very reasons why I’m considering to buy this as my first prime lense! Thank you. Feels like I have a backup support here on my decision! (Mainly because it is “quite” expensive to me). Lol.
great video, i couldn't agree with you more , i purchased the A7iv and 200-600mm last Christmas and what a combo together, for the stuff i do similar to you , keep in mind i amazing hobbyist who loves photography, and have always shot Sony cameras, the 20mm f1.8 G lens is amazing , i have the Sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG that i bought used in mint conditioning its great and the new 24mm f 1.4 is not that much better , i rented the Sony 24mm f1.4 , then a month later rented the 20mm f 1.8 and was gobsmacked at the results ,every bit as good as the 24mm and better in quite a few ways for me as you described in the video just now, clarity ,crispness, lowlight conditions indoor and out and yes to day it gets dark at 5pm , just makes me think of more opportunities to use the lens and can hardly wait to get my hands on it, supplies of it won't be available until boxing week here where i live in Canada, yes i could get it sooner if i purchase it online, i just prefer to get it local to support my shop i have done business with for lots of years there service is top notch, great video👍
Thanks for sharing the quality looks great. I need a lens also that is lighter also. Is there a good 14 or 16mm fast prime you would recommend considering?
Thank you! I guess it depends what you're shooting to be honest. I personally don't need to go any wider than 20mm. However the new Sony 16-35 f4 G Lens looks pretty good! Nice and light with some great video features, but only f4 of course. Other than that I would probably wait a bit as I'm sure Sony will be releasing a MK2 16-35 2.8 soon, but that probably won't be very compact. It is difficult to find a lens that is small, fairly priced and decent quality below 20mm. That's why I love this lens so much I guess! Sorry this probably wasn't very useful!
Yeh we use this almost everyday for 90% of our professional work. Excellent versatile lens that you can use for almost anything. So I would say if you can only get one lens, get a 24-70 f2.8 and build from that.
Great video. Still considering sony 20mm f1.8 vs tamron 17-28 f2.8 considering the fact that i already own tamron 28-75. Id appreciate some insight thanx
Thank you! Much appreciated 😊 Ah well yeh that is a little different to myself. I really like having the 24mm available on my mid zoom lens. So something like a 17-28 or a 16-35 I’m not too concerned by. But because you don’t have the 24mm covered, the 17-28 makes a bit more sense for you. But then 17-28 isn’t much of a range to be honest. It’s whether you want the f1.8? You could still use crop mode with the 20mm to punch in a bit. It’s tricky and I probably wasn’t much help 😂 Good luck!
I'm in the same boat. I've got the original Tamron 28-75 so the 17-28 makes sense. I don't often go wide though so I think I'd prefer the 'special' lens that might make me use it more. Also the better option for my occasional astro.
New to your channel. Thanks for the video. Purchased this lens. This is my first wide angle lend. Question - how do you avoid the curvature on the edges while using this lens or are you fixing in post-production? Thanks.
Thanks and welcome to the community ☺️ Well in photography I fix it in lightroom, but video, I primarily have active stabilisation on with a 10% crop which gets rid of a bit of distortion.
Liked the way you approached and edited this video. Nice delivery and great content. I've had this lens for a short while now and absolutely love it. Often use it manually. Been getting into vintage lenses lately all on the A7iii. Your points on the 20mm 1.8 are spot on. Not seen you before, like your disposition, so I'm subbing.
Wow thank you very much! I’m very new to RUclips so I’m not very well known 😂 I much appreciate your support 😊 It is a great lens. I haven’t used any vintage lenses but it’s something I can see myself looking at at some point. Thanks for subbing! I will be doing more content soon, I’m just very busy and it’s taking a while!
Hmmm yeh I don’t think it’s for me. Not a fan of that wide a focal length plus the bulge in the glass at the front means no screw on ND filters. And it’s a little more expensive. Yeh just not for me really. The 20mm is just the perfect amount of wide for me.
Great video review, I recently purchased the Sony SEL-20F28 E-Mount 20mm F2.8 Prime Fixed Len and would very much like to see a comparison video of the two lenses to see if a pancake len that is 1/3 the price can measure up to the Sony 20mm 1.8? Thanks
Thank you very much! The only problem with that comparison is the SEL-20F28 is an apsc lens and the f1.8 is a full frame lens. It would still be interesting to see how they both perform on an apsc camera though. Unfortunately I don’t have one to test.
so, you think that lens 20/1.8 it is wide enough for wedding photography ( some creative photo sessions )? do you think it is a better option than tamron 17-28 ( only 17 mm interest me) or samyang 18/2.8?
My personal opinion is yes. 20mm full frame is quite wide and with the 1.8 and close focusing distance you can have some fun with close up wedding photography for rings, shoes, cake etc. I’m not a fan of Samyang to be honest, always felt a bit cheap but if it performs well enough then it’s whatever is best for you and your budget!
Question for you. I'm considering this lens vs the 16-35 f4 Sony. I mainly vlog, and do so while carrying the camera. In you footage you did with the 20mm at your workstation, how far was the lens from your face? Trying to get an idea of how far I need to hold the camera out to get that angle. Thanks, and great video!
Thanks for watching! Yes that’s a tough choice. The new Sony 16-35 f4 wasn’t out when I made this video and would have been a big contender. It’s more flexible in terms of focal lengths, but the 20mm would be better for low light and allow for a blurrier background at f1.8. In my studio the camera was only a foot or two from my face, it’s surprising closer than it looks. You can easily clog with it but obviously 16mm is still that bit wider. It’s all about compromise 😂 There’s never a clear winner! I hope this helps and enjoy whichever lens you decide 😊
Also a decent option however for me 20mm is wide enough and I don’t think the range of 17-28 is enough for me. I’d rather have a smaller, lighter, wider prime lens for this focal length. Then my 24-70 becomes my everyday lens offering a much more diverse focal length. I made a video about that one too 😉 But everyone is different. I just find the 16-35 general lenses much more versatile than the 17-28. But the GM is expensive and massive so the 20mm for me is just ideal 😊
Enjoyed your points on the 20mm. Curious about what you thought of the Tamron. Did you try both the 28-75 and the 17-28? Also, what drone are you using for your shots? You don't mention it in your gear. Have Subbed
Thank you 😊 I’ve only tried the 28-75 to be fair, but I believe they are very similar lenses just different focal lengths. And my experience with the 28-75 wasn’t terrible or anything, I just didn’t like it, it felt cheap, it was a bit ugly, I wasn’t confident in the build quality and the 28mm focal length was too tight, I needed a 24 to something. If I had the Tamron 28-75 though, I’d probably consider the 17-28 due to not having the 24mm. But I like the 24-70 range and that’s my main lens so the 20mm for me just compliments it better. Like I say, everyone is different and has different needs. Ah Yeh I should put that in the description thanks! It’s the Mavic 2 Pro. Still very new to drones, I get wet palms every time I fly it 😂 Thanks for subbing! Hoping to get more content out soon, just been very busy lately!
As a first lens I’m not sure. It depends what tou shoot. It’s a fantastic lens but if you’re just starting out or if it will be your only lens then it may be limiting only being 20mm. But if that’s something you would be fine with until you save for a second lens then yes. But maybe try and roadmap your lens wish list first and try and buy a lens you will keep. Not just go with something for the time being. I hope that helps.
@@TheCreatorsBlock okay, thanks for suggestion! Yeah I am also thinking about that roadmap, but the ones I want are out of my budget (16-35 gm and tamron 35-150 probably if optics is good and then some light one for casual so probably this is the one I could buy right now, since light ones almost all under 1k). Samyang 24mm 1.8 looks tempting because I still have like 500 to start saving up for gm, but not sure if I will use samyang later after getting gm even though its light... lol, but that is one of the best placeholders ngl. And then this sony 20g but having this may overlap too much with gm, just one stop difference and both super good at 20 mm
hiii, i need some advice for my a7 iv bro, so i have fe 55 zeis before, and looking for wide lense, i have 2 options, first buy fe 20 g and pair with my fe 55 or sell my fe 55 and buy only 1 24-70 gm 2 ? thank you
Hi mate! It all really depends on what you shoot and what your preferred style is. Personally I cannot live without my 24-70 f2.8. It’s my main lens and I take it everywhere. If I could get the GMii I would but I’m happy with the Sigma for now. The 20mm sits outside of that as it is a fair bit wider than 24mm and it’s such a small, light lens that’s great for vlogging, or as a general walk around. I’ve never used the 55 so I can’t say if it’s worth hanging on to or selling I’m afraid, only you can answer that. But my opinion is the 55mm focal length doesn’t really appeal to me as a designated lens. Within the 24-70 at f2.8 is fine for me. Now an 85 f1.8 or 1.4 is another story. So yeh sorry if it’s a bit vague, but I hope it helps a bit!
I ordered this 20 mm for my new fx6 🎥 i know that i have no ibis, but i film with gimbal or tripod or work with catalyst browse 👍🏻😉 best cinematic greetings from germany
I like 20mm focal length but as a landscape shooter i replaced my Sony 20 1.8 with a Voigtlader 21 F1.4 and never look back. The Voigtlander offers much much smoother manual focus operation which is what I do 99.9% of the time in landscape, It's also sharper with much better built quality .
Great stuff! I’d be interested in seeing some of your work 😊 That’s the beauty of photography and video, everyone has their niche and everyone works differently. It’s whatever tool best suits your needs. Because I’m very into video and doing this sort of RUclips video, having great autofocus is important for me.
I was torn between the 2 but I will use this daylight, and it is quite a hassle to put an ND filter with the 14mm, so 20mm is for me. If you are not using it then go for 14mm
That’s a tough one. For me not being able to put a variable ND on the front of the 14mm is a deal breaker as I mainly use it for video. But a 14mm focal length is pretty cool.
@@TheCreatorsBlock yes, i think for my use case i would need the 67 filters too! will mostly use it for interior design + architecture shots, so plenty of glass and metal to deal with. the 20mm it is. thanks!
What presumptuous concept to do influencer videos. In reality I'm (truely) jealous to not have that courage(!) to do videos (for instance a serie "the five reasons why I bought each of my (carefully selected) lenses. Hmm..a challange to overcome scrupules?)
Thank you! 😊 Yes focus breathing is it’s downside but it’s fine for me. Can understand why it might be a dealbreaker though. Would love to know what you go for instead.
I would say it would be great for video for the a7iii mainly because you have the ability to not only shoot wide at 20mm but you can punch in using Crop Mode to 30mm. So it’s kind of like a 16-35 but with a 1.8 aperture at the 20mm end. Only thing to think about is your IBIS, there isn’t any in the lens so if that’s an issue for you then the only other one I know that has IBIS in the lens at this focal length is the 16-35 f4. But then it’s an f4 and you don’t get all the cool benefits of the 1.8. It’s a hard choice. You just have to weigh up your needs and wants and see which lens give the best compromise. That’s the key word, compromise, because there are pros and cons for all lenses. I bought this lens primarily for video for the a7siii which does have the Active Stabe, but I can’t use the crop mode like you could. But for AF and image quality it’s remarkable and will be really nice for video. I hope this helps!
Yet another shit talking head. 20mm is not about closeups, at all! Try to use it in crop mode. Btw if you shoot video, active stabilisation crops, and if you use it in aps-c mode you can get near 35mm focal length and near 24 in FF. It is the reason to consider. And focus breathing compensation also crops. So if you shoot video it is better to have a little bit wider
Totally agree with your points. Love my 20mm. I went with this over the 24gm. Small , light, sharp, focus it’s all great in this lens. I have to say, this lens and my 28 f2 probably get the most use for my personal work. Great channel man!

It's a great lens. it's much wider than the 24mm, better than the 16-35 F4 darker lens. And can be set to super 35 for a 30mm in video.
My thoughts exactly 😊
If you enable focus breathing comp and active stabilization, you essentially have a 24mm and 35mm (in APS-C mode) for video. Love that.

Hi, what kind of ND filter are you using with this lens? Thanks
It’s a Zoemi variable ND
I bought it because I wanted a 20mm for my Sony Alpha. That's all the thought I gave it.
Well you're one of the lucky ones who knows exactly what he wants 😂
Where to buy lenshood for Sony 20mm FE lens? can u pls share link
Hi, not really sure as it comes with the lens. You would have to just google or try ebay?
I like 20mm focal length but as a landscape shooter i replaced my Sony 20 1.8 with a Voigtlader 21 F1.4 and never look back. The Voigtlander offers much much smoother manual focus operation which is what I do 99.9% of the time in landscape, It's also sharper with much better built quality .
Great stuff! I’d be interested in seeing some of your work 😊
That’s the beauty of photography and video, everyone has their niche and everyone works differently. It’s whatever tool best suits your needs. Because I’m very into video and doing this sort of RUclips video, having great autofocus is important for me.
good
Thanks
Great video
Awesome thank you 😊
This 20mm G or the 14mm GM ? I’m very torn
@@TheCreatorsBlock yes, i think for my use case i would need the 67 filters too! will mostly use it for interior design + architecture shots, so plenty of glass and metal to deal with. the 20mm it is. thanks!
Add to cart😆
Haha awesome 😂
What presumptuous concept to do influencer videos. In reality I'm (truely) jealous to not have that courage(!) to do videos (for instance a serie "the five reasons why I bought each of my (carefully selected) lenses. Hmm..a challange to overcome scrupules?)
Nice Video Bro, but the focus breathing at 2:05 is too obvious. I will pass on this Lens.
Thank you! 😊
Yes focus breathing is it’s downside but it’s fine for me. Can understand why it might be a dealbreaker though. Would love to know what you go for instead.
@@TheCreatorsBlock I think as long your not making focus pulling should be fine.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, but the jump cuts you keep doing are horrendous. It literally hurt my eyes
Ha! Ok noted for next time. Thank you 😊
Is this lens good for video with the a7iii?
@@TheCreatorsBlock thanks a lot for your reply! Very informative. Best
You’re welcome 😊
Takes 2 min to get to the point? Lmao stop that. But hreat video!
Thanks for the feedback! I will take it onboard for next time. 😊
that's what she said. LMAO.
😂 It’ll never get old!
No need for the hostility. I hope you find another review to your liking.
You looked weird and talked quietly like a creep lol wtf good review tho

Sorry I had to stop watching. Couldn't handle the jerky edits in between every few words. You can't say two sentences without cutting and slicing?
It’s a good job there are plenty more videos on YT for you to find useful. Sorry mine wasn’t to your taste.
