Camera Conspiracies please shame Sony’s Face AF on a6600 because it doesn’t work if you turn on the smartphone control (use your smartphone as external display ) . It’s a good theme for your investigation!
I don’t own a full frame camera but I do own the PL 10-25 f1.7 and I have come to really appreciate the 20mm focal length. It’s wide but not to wide and with the close focusing and fast aperture you can get really unique looking shots that incorporate the background into the shot. Sony did a great job of offering quality for an affordable price here.
And for the review! I was looking at this lens and the Sony FE 24mm G f2 and after seeing how much less distortion there is on the 20mm in comparison, in your other video, it gave me a really good comparison. Thank you!
Great review man, I need to step up my game! This lens is so good but I think the price for it is way too steep though... but that 1.8 looks damn good!
So I started photography around the time this lens launched and it was one of my first; a year in, and this thing is ABSOLUTELY a go-to. I even have the Sigma 14-24 and I keep going back to this one.
Would you rather use the Tamron 17-28 mm f2.8 or the 20 mm f1.8? I really cant decide between these two. I already have the 35 mm f1.8 and I love f1.8. Not sure whether I need 16 mm at all. I'd like to shoot landscape, architecture and night sky with a wider lens (both photo and video). Which would you recommend?
I love my 24 GM, but can definitely see how this lens could be even better for a lot of people. This seems like the perfect vlogging lens, as it gives just enough room for a person's head to comfortably fit in frame. I'm more of a photo guy, so the low light & portraiture benefits of the Aperture and slightly longer focal length of the GM better suit me, but this lens looks to be a killer for video & architecture.
"...but if you did not find this video helpful or entertaining, then why are you still watching this?" I've been happy since you started this kind of ending, but particularly loved this one. It's closer to the sarcasm I dish out. You're just too nice. Thanks for the nice and succinct review of this great, little new lens.
Just finished testing a vintage 20mm. Those results kind of made me fall in love with a dedicated 20, otherwise this lens wouldn't even be on my radar...but it is now! Nice review G
Thank you very much, it is only the review I was looking for since I am an architecture filmmaker and I have not found any video like this on RUclips, I subscribe
Excited for this lens. Was on the fence with Tokina 20mm and Loxia 21mm . The sony price is right in the middle of these two. I prefer Sony's small form factor.
Thanks. You're the first reviewer I've seen to mention the focus breathing. Do you think this would make focus stacking impossible? I shoot a lot of focus stacked landscapes.
Nice vid. This and IBIS is the big advantage of the Sony system. The breadth of good and great glass is so enticing. I shoot on the EOS R and the limited RF glass is frustrating. And most EF glass is missing IS. 🤷🏻♂️
I appreciate that your reviews don’t beat about the bush and aim for an extended time when it’s not necessary! Thank you! Torn on this lens personally. I have the tamron 17-28mm and love it, but a wide prime with a 1.8 aperture could have its use for me during wedding receptions.
@@Donbros I’ve noticed it once or twice to be honest - I don’t do many focus pulls but a couple of occasions where autofocus has jumped to a face further back and I’ve noticed it. I don’t think it’s enough that an untrained eye would see it but it irritated me a little bit!
@@kingweddingmedia yeah I wanted this to be my first lens (actually second but I may refund the other i have which is budget samyant 24mm 2.8), but that focus breathing is keeping me a bit undecided. It kinda feels more like second lens than first you would buy for those who have 24-70 gm. And more like the one you attach but not keep all the time or no? Personally I prefer wide angles as my first lenses mainly because I do a lot of indoor videos and if i do outside I usually don't film people face that often more people in full body
Update: I ordered this lens from Canada Camera and I love it too -- for Real Estate. Works very well and gets rid of the GoPro almost fisheye look from the 12-24/4 G lense. Thanks again, Gerald!
As I watch this video, why don't you use the 20mm as your main lens? In crop mode and with breathing compensation it should have the same focal length as the 35 f1.8.
This lens is amazing! I replaced both my 16-35 f4 and 24 f1.4 with this one lens. I've been so happy with it thus far! I use it for weddings, RUclips style videos, commercial style videos, and even get away with it for my real estate videos. Great option! I just love the build and feel of these lenses... If Sony released a similarly priced 50mm with this style of build, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
Another great job. I gave you three thumbs up. For Canon, I have had pleasing results with the sigma 20mm. If I need to go wider, then I go to the Canon 16-35. Even though I do not use Sony, your video hit the mark in giving information to know what to look for in any lens. Thanks.
Why can't focus breathing be digitally corrected in camera? I figure if you're shooting video you apply the distortion correction anyway, so some slight scaling to compensate for focus breathing should be easy. Really impressive lens, thanks for the review!
Great review, Gerald. As a new Sony user, I've been wondering which lens to add to my repertoire as a good vlogging lens. I will definitely test this one out.
"For real estate" I haven't met one colleague that shoots with a prime lens for real estate! Most used range is 16-21mm and the only prime lens one considers for that line of work is an adapted 17mm tilt shift Canon lens. 12-24/4 G & 16-35/4 G are much more practical for real estate as you'd be shooting between f/8 to f/11 most of the time. 24/1.8 G is more suited for event photography as it gives 1.3 stops over a 24-70/2.8 in low light situations. Just saying!
Awesome lens for sure. I love it for photos primarily but is still awesome for hand carry vlog style without the painful barrel distortion of other stubby lenses. It's not going to replace the 35 in vids for me though. Great vid. Thanks Gerald.
I'm considering the 35 to do talking head videos on APS-C (I don't like that 'big nose' look of wide lenses) ... would you recommend it for this scenario (or tend more to a 20mm'ish given the APS-C crop)?!?
nmbr73 I am not sure if you were asking me or Gerald but a 35 or a 16-35 on a full frame for talking heads seems almost natural to me. A 24 on an APS-C has almost no annoying center or barrel distortion. When I use APS-C I usually bring a 16-35 and a speedbooster and find myself floating in the 22 to 35 range.
@@jaydivina533 I was asking you 😬 I should have mentioned; my bad! The more I thank you for your very helpful answer! I'm an absolut beginner - especially when it comes to videography. Very good review Gerald. Love how you worded the evaluations, exactly the information I was looking for in a video surprisingly concise. Your reviews are packing so much info, great job!
Thank you for providing some input on the rendering quality. I am curious to see how the rendering of this lens compares to the Loxia 21 but I will have to wait a while for that. Hopefully in the next few months I will be able to see how the 20 G will handle 830nm Infrared on my converted camera.
Well said, Gerald! Thanks for the review or at least overview! My only beef with the lens is cost. For now, I am just going to live with my 28mm f2.0 + the wide angle adapter that makes it 21mm f2.8. Not the best solution, but for my needs, it will have to do. The extension/adapter is a bit heavy too and it adds to the length. The 20 f1.8 would be ideal for size, weight, and can be mounted to a smaller gimbal without too much problem. Again, thanks for this overview!
That looks nice! Glad to see Sony is getting into the lower cost f1.8 lenses. The Nikon 20mm f1.8g was one of my favorite lenses when I used their fullframe DSLR gear. It's up to personal preference, but I do find that focal length really appealing.
Hey Gerald am I missing something or is there any real technical advantage to having these declicking switches on the Sony lenses with aperture rings? They step in 1/3s regardless.
Gerald got a question for your geniuses. I've been making some videos with a similar gradient light background (although blue). Have you found any tricks to limit the gradient banding that compression creates? Out of camera (Sony a7iii) it's smooth as butta. but anything less than a proresLT (which is a massive file) leaves me with the banding. your gradient looks pretty sharp (even through RUclips) and your black corners are virtually noiseless. Anyway, just thought I'd give this a shot! btw, your stuff is the stuff of legend. love it.
Wonderful review! Is this lens good for street photography? I watched your 35mm lens video as well when it came out and was planning on getting that... but now... there's this.
In 2024 are there any other lens you’d say also give you 95% of the quality for 40% less (or close enough) Switching to Sony and choosing lenses and this ticks all my boxes
focus breathing: every lens zooms a bit as it focuses. in order to not focus breath, the lens needs a second moving element to zoom in and our as you focus in and out. this adds cost, and size. if you ever see a super compact lens, it will probably breath.
so, you think that lens 20/1.8 it is wide enough for wedding photography ( some creative photo sessions )? do you think it is a better option than tamron 17-28 ( only 17 mm interest me) or samyang 18/2.8?
I like how you had a very different approach to the review of this lens than others (it's your style obviously, but anyways) I got some new info that I found helpful cause I'm considering switching from sony apsc to fullframe.

I am planning to go on sony system. And i am confused between sony a7iii or a6400 because of that ultrawide lens. I have two sets in mind but I can’t choose which one to go
1. Sony a7iii+ tamron 28-75 f2.8+ samyang 18 f2.8

I mostly shoot in the range of 24-70 but sometimes I need that ultrawide lens(near 16 mm) for covering the whole landscape and some creative photos with unique perspective that ultrawide gives. I am not much into video or vlogging. Photo is my priority. F2.8 on full frame will give me sufficient amount of blur and low light capability. 9 blades but it was shown at 1.8 where the blades are out of the way? Are the blades not fully retracted when open? How does it look at f2 or 2.8?
Late to the party, but how would you compare this to the sony 28mm f2?
I'd love to see an unusual comparison between the Tamron 17-28 and the Sigma 14-24 on the wide side.
Quwstion , I just recently bought the a7siii . Any vignetting problems with the 20mm f 1.8?
Can't decide: tamron 17-28 or Sony 20 f/1.8!
Who knows how tammy goes with manual focusing? Cus i'm using both: auto and manual.
