This is probably the most useful video i've seen while contemplating which 16-35mm lens to buy. I'd originally homes in on the new Sigma 16-28 2.8, but then decided I'd go the whole hog for the Sony 16-35 F2.8 GM, the 'gold standard'. But do I really want to pay that much, it's big and heavy. I think this video has moved my choice to the Sony 16-35 PZ. The image quality, most important feature for me, is first class. The filter size fit the big range of filters I already have (GM is 82mm thread so I'd need to change them all - an expensive step). And F4 is actually find for me, on a Sony sensor and mainly for landscapes. Thank you, really useful.

Agree with all your points! I also own the Tamron and , while the images it produces are fine, I just don't enjoy shooting with it and also find the focal range limiting,. As an A7C owner, I am now interested in this new 16-35 lens for its compact form factor but your "pixel peeping" results has made it a real contender for my Sony dollars. I could see this pairing very nicely with the Tamron 28-200 as a lightweight travel combo with a fast prime thrown in for low light situations. I may have to let go of my Tamron 17-28 after all! Good review!
This looks like a perfect vlogging lens. Especially for me as a rock climber when I want to film a boulder I am doing but there is very limited space to place the tripod. Opening up to 16mm would really make it easy. Being at F4 could almost eliminate the need for an nd filter in many situations as well, which just makes life simpler. Gonna wait for a price drop and see if Tamron is ready to launch their G2 version of the 17-28!
@@MiguelClimbs That's awesome! I'll be sticking with the 20mm for now, (I just love it so much!) but there are many times where the extra wide angle would make tripod placements better for bouldering. Good luck capturing your climbs!
You're saying it's an advantage to get forced down to F4 over stopping down on a faster lens for some reason? For shooting sports I wouldn't bother with an ND, not that there is much hope to knock out a background an F4 anyway (personal preference for sports to have a higher shutter speed).
honestly, after I got the 90mm macro, I sorta stopped using my 24-105 and would really consider switching that zoom lens out for this new one. don't think I have a reason to use any focal length between 35 and 90mm anymore and the small additional reach to 105 is a bit moot.

It stays on the body and goes everywhere. Great range and IQ is just great! Feels like this one will be with me a long time.
Felt really happy with Sony's job on their G lens lineup, probably since 24-105mm G. Super sharp, good quality and bunch of the newest technology they use on their new products. Before this 16-35 launched, I was really happy with the 20mm G which have a great view of vlog and the wide f1.8 makes me feel happy. But I'm now reaaaaally considering to get this new 1635 G to replace my 20mm G which also provide a good quality of image and great view of vlog, but come additionally with the PZ and the flexibility by the zoom, and the most important the compact size and weight! What I found is just a bit bigger than the 20mm G.
Yeah I'm in the same boat, but I'm thinking the opposite, to keep my 20 1.8G because of that aperture, closer focusing distance and sharpness. I can always use clear image zoom when I'm filming to give it a 1,5x extra reach without any quality loss (my down button is a shortcut to the zoom), I also have the crop mode on my a7c, so my 20mm is now either a 30mm or 45mm. But I can see that this new PZ is appealing to many people 👌
Dang, dang, dang. Great vid. Welcome to PNW! I'm in the Seattle area. I don't need it since i have an assortment of lenses already, but very enticing. Will prob pick up for gimbal on FX3.
Best review on RUclips for this lens and thanks for the pixel peeping part! This week I sold my Zeiss 16-35 and pre-ordered this one. The light weight is the biggest pro for me, that in combination with sharpness. Sounds like a perfect travel lens.
This is definitely what I’m getting. Good for landscape photography and real estate. I do bracketing or use flash with interior stuff and I never use 2.8 so f4 is perfect. And it just looks better in terms of looks compared to the the Tamron.

I had the zeiss 16-35 f4 and loved it.. picked up the Sony GM but sold it, too big for backpacking.. picked up the Tamron 17-28 and I also feel that 28mm I miss that larger 16- 35mm range. Might look for a used copy of that Sony.
If you already own the 16-35GM but the weight weighs you down, but you care for the low light capabilities for interior shots of say a church in europe (where you can’t use flash nor a tripod), would you go with this new f4 and hope to compensate using topaz plugins for those noisy shots, or would you recommend me the 20mm f1.8 G ? Thanks
I'm so glad I've waited this long to invest in a wide angle zoom. This really seems like the perfect one. My local camera shop has one of these. Just might be on my way to pick it up. Great video as always!
Thanks for the review. Very helpful. I've been weighing up zoom lenses for video and so far this is at the top of my list. I recognize the locations...I live in the same city. Cheers.
The video was amazing. Love the comparisons gives a good objective oversight of the product. Also I love the sound design of the intro. Did you use Epidemic or Musicbed to create the sounds or did you use the sounds of the actual footage?
You mean for the video example? I recorded some ambient sounds of the water and wind with a field recorder and then mixed it with the live sounds I got on camera any time there was something important like a footstep, good going up, or a big wave on screen. But the underlying layer of water, wind and birds really helped too. Going to do that more often now.
I pre-ordered this lens a few days after the announcement. It’ll replace my Sigma 14-24mm art lens that’s so heavy and made me use my other cameras + iPhone 13 pro more Also great video, I’m a first time viewer
Very informative Dunna. As a new entrant in the Sony ecosystem, I got salivating seeing how well this lens performs and it's form factor. Definitely on my list for the next time I am upgrading my repertoire.
This is why people should switch from Nikon and Canon to Sony. Plus that focus breathing on A7iv just shows how innovative much more innovative Sony really is. They are just playing catch up
In fact, I didn’t see any picture of using power zoom to achieve push-pull in your video, which shows that the actual usage rate of Power Zoom is actually very low, so why don’t I choose even an used 16-35 GM in excellent condition lens, its price is about the same as a new 16-35 PZ
If i pair this with the A7S III and just rely on the IBIS, does it matter that this lens doesn't have OSS? Want to use it to record promotional videos for shops, so will be panning around the shelves, and also for videos at events..
Thank you for posting. I have the Ziess 16-35 f/4 and will be selling it in favor the new one. Love the size and I think will work great on both a9 and a7c bodies I own.
Since the a7iv crops so much in 4K/60, Active Stab and lens breathing I recently bought the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 (I already have the 24-70 Sigma) for filming weddings. Having 2nd thoughts after Saturday’s wedding. The Sigma is very heavy, I can’t get it to balance on any of my gimbals and you can’t use a variable ND. I think I’m going to preorder the Sony. I wish it had OSS!!!
How would this F4 lens perform when shooting (without a tripod) inside cathedrals, bridges at sunset and inside restaurants? I can't decide between this or the new Sigma 16-28 f2.8. I'm only concern on the 16mm focal length, I would love for Sony to just release a 16mm ultra wide prime lens, but that won't probably happen in the near future.
Great video. New lens is a winner. I already have the GM and tamron (been meaning to sell it). I might have to sell the GM to get this one. I really love saving so much size and weight.
Hi Dunna, great video there! Was wondering how is the picture quality compare to Zeiss 16-35mm . As I found a bargaining price for those lens, I aim to use mostly for landscape photo. I love the compact of the PZ, should I buy the PZ or second hand Zeiss? Thanks.
Great video. I just went to Iceland on a trip with my Sony A7R3, and my 24-105mm F4. I found myself enjoying shooting with my iPhone 13 Max Ultra Wide lens the most. it was great for environmental snapshots. With that said, I am considering picking this up, or saving up a bit more and getting the Sony 12-24mm. Any suggestions?
This is the review we needed! Thanks for pixel-peeping for us haha. Now I am having a difficult time choosing between the Tamron 17-28 , 16-35 G and the 24 f/1.4 GM! I do travel photo (i.e., landscape, astro, portrait) and 24mm GM seems to give me the “Wow factor” where as the Tamron 17-28 does not. I think having that “Wow factor” is important as a photographer. Tough choices!!
@@dunnadidit Given that you are based in Alberta, Would you say that the 24mm is wide enough for Banff landscape photography??? (i already have the 24-70,70-180 covered) and was considering the 24 GM over the tamron 17-28 or sony 16-35G (for astro and wide angle shots)
Like i tell people when they tell me its only a small difference. Yes small but that's what differs me from the rest. I care a lot about my work that I willing to pay for that extra difference. So my clients are getting the best.
One of the best comparison Videos about that lense. I will send my tamron back and get the sony, mainly because of the sharpness you describe, weight and the powerzoom which i can controll with my fx3. Got a GM24mm 1,4 for bokeeh stuff ;)
I just want to know which lens should I get for my a6400, I would love your insight on that. I'm trying to make short beat making videos and I want the best quality.
Definitely interested, the control of depth of field is the attraction to me. I use a 16/70 F4 as my lowlight indoor lense, I have lower stop primes but they lack depth of field... FWIW. Small formfactor and low weight is important too!
I am really liking the idea of this being a 'one lens' travel lense. Traveling is is usually out doors and F4 is plenty of light for that. And at the long end, 35 is fine...and in crop mode, you can push to 52mm. The Sony 20-70 would be the other one worth considering for travel purpose. (Honorary mention: the 10-28 on a crop body is also a considering. )
Thanks a lot. Your opinion make me to decide to buy this len. I will also buy a prime len instead the low light shooting because 16-35 really light weight.
8:09 I wish there was an easy way to show "market price" for reference. For instance, I just got a used 16-35 Zeiss for $500 since it's been out forever lol
Just bought the lens, excited to use it...the lens hood, shouldn't it click lock when you turn it or is mine defective? I have it lined up and when I turn it all the way it doesn't click-lock like all my other lens hoods seem to do which makes me wonder if I have a defective hood or lens hood mount. It falls off easy when I put it in the bag. Just curious if this is normal, design flaw or just plain defective and I need to have Sony replace.
I’m so conflicted. Been looking at the Tamron as a possible vlogging lens for my A7C but this looks so enticing. Especially cause the power zoom means I can connect a Bluetooth controller and zoom and vlog with 1 hand (if I get a Bluetooth remote/tripod with it like the one smallrig makes). I’m not in the financial position to order either one right now but I’ll have to do some more research and see if the Sony is the right choice. I was worried about losing that stop of light but like you said “Sony full frame cameras have amazing low light performance” and the A7C is no different.
Great review, thank you. I am a new videographer and I can’t decide between the F4 and F2.8 in the GM. My only concern is the low light situations as I will be using the lense with my sony AS7 and I am afraid F4 won’t be enough. I mostly shot the city at night ( street, monuments, events, cars,…) and there is usually some light going on. On the other hand I find the GM too heavy with my gimbal and so impractical. Have you used it at night? Is the footage good? Which lense do you recommend for night photography? Thank you in advance.
Have you taken a look at the Sigma 16-28 f2.8? It might be the happy medium you're looking for. F2.8 but much smaller than the GM, and still great quality. Check that one out → ruclips.net/video/e-gKEW48QI8/видео.html That said, I haven't used the F4 at night but I have struggled to shoot f4 with other lenses at night. It's useable but not ideal is what I would say.
I have the G master and am very tempted to trade in for this new lens due to it being smaller and lighter, have the flexibility to extend with clear image zoom, and it’s apparent greater sharpness
I feel like if they were to update the GM with some of these new features… they would make a killing. The new focus and zoom motors would allow them to make it a bit smaller and lighter I think. Or at very least, lighter. The size might be more to do with the f2.8 than the motors. Regardless. I’d love to see their whole GM line get the newest tech.
I have the GM, the PZ would be really useful for gimbal work. I also like to put my gimbal on a tripod and control wirelessly with an xbox controller, I'd be able to zoom in and out and aim the camera which could be super handy. I don't think I'd give up my 2.8 though so I might get both, but that seems excessive as I also have the 35mm 1.4 gm.
I like the idea of this new Sony, but I am being careful this time around to not assemble a bag full of lenses that I'll barely use. On my older Nikon gear I had the full range of 1.4 to 2.8 14mm right up to 300mm and everything in between. So many that I needed a second bag and then the dilemma of which lenses to take with me and which to leave behind. Then suffering severe anxiety of FOMO a great shot if only I had that other lens with me! I'm trying to be less is better and work with what I have, but damn this looks like a lens I could not be without!
Im on the same boat. I think i will land on 16-35 f4 sony g, 55 1.8 zeiss, 70-180 tamron 2.8, and one portrait/macro (sigma 105 probably). That way there are 2 lenses to carry for everything: portraits, street photo, landscapes.
@@Booyamakashi great choices, I also have the 55 and the 70-180, both versatile and great value for money. My third lens is the tamron 24mm F2.8 "Macro" 1:2 to try to fill the gaps while being inexpensive, it does it pretty well but I'm now considering a 2:1 macro and a wide angle zoom 17-28 or 16-35 PZ to add to the collection. I also consider the Samyang 35mm F2.8 because... it only weights 80 grams 🤯while keeping very good image qualty to alternate with the 55 as a go to lens. Definitely not an easy task !
Really great video! I was searching for a comparison between the Sony vs Tamron and found this video by accident. You might want to re-title as there are no comparisons available as good as your video. I made up my mind to invest in the Sony because of your video, thanks!
Would you go for the 16-35mm f4 Zeiss oss at half the price of the PZ..? I’m actually thinking maybe NOT given the neat features and weather sealing. Not to mention the IQ as you’ve highlighted.
Honestly great video! I've got the Sony 16-35 GM 2.8 and really love the size factor of this, 2.8 is nice, but having an a7SIII and the a7IV as you said the low light issue really isn't an issue losing 1 stop of light. My question is, which would you go for and if you the GM would you sell it for this from the tests you've done?
@@onejah8151 he never responded though I can update you in my own experience. I'll still choose the GMs for their 2.8 and their great IQ. I still own the 16-35 GM. I also had the 20mm f1.8 though I missed the different focal ranges of having the 16-35. So I sold it and never looked back. Still feel the same today. If size is important than the f4 is probably a better investment. And you can probably get away with it even in low light for the most part. Though I still like having the f2.8 as I do a lot of talking head content and filming in the evenings.
Very good review…..I am sticking with my tamron for sure, but looks like a fantastic lens. So many good options with Sony. Never noticed the hello background lol 😂
considering that the Zeiss dropped down to 800/900 bucks (or even cheaper if you buy it used) would you still recommend this lens over the Zeiss? I'm a bit hasitant since budget is a big deal for me but I wanna get into landscape and architecture (also in a professional video manner). And one of both would be a great addition to my tamron 35-150 but I can't jet say if it's worth to throw out 1.3k or just 800 bucks you know?
After thinking long and hard, I decided to go with a lightly used 16-35 F4 G. I think it's the best bang for the buck for my needs and wants. Plus I saved $400 by buying it used. Of course the Tamron could be had for around $450 used making it a great buy too.
The Sony is such a beautiful lens. It really is a joy to use, while the tamron just feels so spartan... and short in terms of focal length. Really thinking about selling my tamron now.

I had the zeiss 16-35 f4 and loved it.. picked up the Sony GM but sold it, too big for backpacking.. picked up the Tamron 17-28 and I also feel that 28mm I miss that larger 16- 35mm range. Might look for a used copy of that Sony.
Great video! Will probably pick up the lens after have seen this.
Will the power zoom use up more of the camera battery when compared to using a lens with a mechanical zoom?
If you already own the 16-35GM but the weight weighs you down, but you care for the low light capabilities for interior shots of say a church in europe (where you can’t use flash nor a tripod), would you go with this new f4 and hope to compensate using topaz plugins for those noisy shots, or would you recommend me the 20mm f1.8 G ? Thanks
I'm so glad I've waited this long to invest in a wide angle zoom. This really seems like the perfect one. My local camera shop has one of these. Just might be on my way to pick it up. Great video as always!
Same here lol
Also, it was all musicbed music!
Great review! And this lens looks like a awesome. Thanks for putting in the time 🙏
Super informative and well made video. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Good info and thanks!! Going from a Nikon Z6 to the A7siii and got this 16-35 PZ for it as well. Good to know it’s sharp 😊
I pre-ordered this lens a few days after the announcement.
It’ll replace my Sigma 14-24mm art lens that’s so heavy and made me use my other cameras + iPhone 13 pro more
Also great video, I’m a first time viewer
Yeah, it’s too bad that 14-24 isn’t a bit smaller and I would love to be able to use circular filters with it.
Best review of this lens
Thanks so much!!
I’m looking to buy my first mirrorless and this sounds like the perfect lens for me that might make me get a Sony ahead of the canon
How about the 10-18 F4 OSS apsc lens. It can be used in full frame cameras.
Very informative Dunna. As a new entrant in the Sony ecosystem, I got salivating seeing how well this lens performs and it's form factor. Definitely on my list for the next time I am upgrading my repertoire.
Thanks dude! Glad you liked it!
This is why people should switch from Nikon and Canon to Sony. Plus that focus breathing on A7iv just shows how innovative much more innovative Sony really is. They are just playing catch up
I love the bokeh more on the nikon,, and color science on the canon.. Sony win at the AF performance & lens selection
@@MrHarizakbaralam how can bokeh be v different with same lens
M no
In fact, I didn’t see any picture of using power zoom to achieve push-pull in your video, which shows that the actual usage rate of Power Zoom is actually very low, so why don’t I choose even an used 16-35 GM in excellent condition lens, its price is about the same as a new 16-35 PZ
Which one would you prefer for architectural shots, and if they are going to be printed? Sony 16 35 zeiss sigma 16 28 2.8 tamron 17 28
i bought the sony f4. it's amazing! razor sharp.
I already own it and you can NOT go wrong with this lens
Is there a better sony lens for shooting real estate or is this perect for those interior home shots??
Great video. New lens is a winner. I already have the GM and tamron (been meaning to sell it). I might have to sell the GM to get this one. I really love saving so much size and weight.
Hi Dunna, great video there! Was wondering how is the picture quality compare to Zeiss 16-35mm . As I found a bargaining price for those lens, I aim to use mostly for landscape photo. I love the compact of the PZ, should I buy the PZ or second hand Zeiss? Thanks.
This kind of proves what i was thinking The G master isnt that sharp is what Im experiencing with mine but I havent seen anyone say that.
Great video! Super helpful content as I look for 16-35 option for Sony A4
Great video.
That is tough. That 24 is definitely a 100% wow lens, but not as versatile. Tough call!
1. I actually moved to Victoria haha.
2. You might be able to get by with 24mm but I really like to go wider for certain shots.
Like i tell people when they tell me its only a small difference. Yes small but that's what differs me from the rest. I care a lot about my work that I willing to pay for that extra difference. So my clients are getting the best.
I had the 28-75 Tamron. While sharp and useful, it definitely disappointed me from lack of Wow factor. I think I’m spoiled by my Zeiss Batis lenses
Excellent comparison. You’ve helped me make my decision
I will also buy a prime len instead the low light shooting because 16-35 really light weight.
can you make a vid explaining white balance and best settings for it
I like your color grading .. do u sell some luts?
I have some creative cinematic luts on my store dunnadidit.com/store
Awesome review and video test footage. Thank you.
Awesome video and advice.
The Zeiss 16-35mm is now $998 USD, does that make it a better contender against the new PZ?
Have you tried to zoom with the remote control while it’s on the camera and would it be practical to use remote while filming
Check that one out → ruclips.net/video/e-gKEW48QI8/видео.html
That said, I haven't used the F4 at night but I have struggled to shoot f4 with other lenses at night.
I love the new Sony because of the reach and it's so small to travel with. I will get it!
Smart! I really appreciate the careful approach!
Any compared the 16-35mm pz with the Sigma 16-28 f 2.8? Sony seems more versatile with power zoom and newer tech.
Really great video! I was searching for a comparison between the Sony vs Tamron and found this video by accident. You might want to re-title as there are no comparisons available as good as your video. I made up my mind to invest in the Sony because of your video, thanks!
Did you experience any vignetting with filters? Wondering if using a step-up ring to get it to 82mm would cause that wide open.
My question is, which would you go for and if you the GM would you sell it for this from the tests you've done?
any update on this
@@onejah8151 he never responded though I can update you in my own experience.
I have lots of primes at f/1.4, so having a zoom at f/4 is a no brainer. Going with this lens.
That Tamron focus breaths like a billion pound dragon being poked with a huge stick!
lol i didn’t know that was an issue that dragons had.
@@dunnadidit That and being over weight.
Have you tried the 16-35/4 PZ G vlogging walk around on an unstabilized APS-C like ZV-E10 or A6X00..?
Very good review…..I am sticking with my tamron for sure, but looks like a fantastic lens. So many good options with Sony. Never noticed the hello background lol 😂
Any clue when is this lens going to be generally available in online stores such as Amazon or Sony? The powerzoom.
considering that the Zeiss dropped down to 800/900 bucks (or even cheaper if you buy it used) would you still recommend this lens over the Zeiss? I'm a bit hasitant since budget is a big deal for me but I wanna get into landscape and architecture (also in a professional video manner). And one of both would be a great addition to my tamron 35-150 but I can't jet say if it's worth to throw out 1.3k or just 800 bucks you know?
Did you use a gimbal to shoot the video or only something like the gorillapod?
And what ND filter would your recommend for this lens?
After thinking long and hard, I decided to go with a lightly used 16-35 F4 G. I think it's the best bang for the buck for my needs and wants. Plus I saved $400 by buying it used. Of course the Tamron could be had for around $450 used making it a great buy too.
Thank you for this review
Man I’ve been waiting to this to start shipping , I kept refreshing the browser untill it was available to pre order
The Sony is such a beautiful lens. It really is a joy to use, while the tamron just feels so spartan... and short in terms of focal length. Really thinking about selling my tamron now.
Looks like a great lens since I just got the Sony A7Siii.
Great pairing!!
