    This seems to be a really great lens to pair with the A7C. I could see putting this on the A7C and just not really ever taking it off. Great for gimbal work between the weight and ability to externally control the zoom, also one of very few zoom lenses that has an aperture ring - which makes up for the lack of a front dial on the A7C. Parfocal, minimal focus breathing, so great for video. And an internal zoom, so it shouldn't get as dirty.
    The main complaint is going to be that it's an F4. But I think that's a great tradeoff. This lens would be a lot bigger, heavier, and more expensive if it was a 2.8 or faster.

  • @jmone3559
    @jmone3559 2 года назад +5

    As a FX6 user, the release of another 16-35 without OSS (like the C lens) is not great. Even though I want the PZ and better optics, issues with producing shaky handheld video is worse. Looks like I'll be keeping the Zeiss for now (and using Clear Image Zoom where required after getting a manual framing from the zoom ring).

    I think both parfocality and focus breathe is compensated by wire because the lens controls both zoom and focus by wire. I also think that this is the key for being so compact. However the motors and electronics need room. More that F4 may increase the diameter beyond practicality?

    As soon as Sony catches up on a great lineup for great PZ lenses, the broadcast world will probably start adopting smaller bodies like the FX3. Our production company has already been using FX3s, but the lenses were always an issue in the broadcast world.

    Question regarding the focus breathing (sorry if this is off-topic from this video, but when you mentioned it at 5:58 it came up): we recently watched Jungle Cruise (with The Rock) and we noticed a very present focus breathing in some scenes. Do you think that's because they used specific lens or they add it in post (is it possible?) for some reason?

    It's interesting that both of these lenses are competing in the same space, and that is 16-35mm lenses geared for video.
    The Zeiss I think still holds a place there. Although Gerald doesn't do a lot of work requiring OSS, if you're looking for an all day lens for shooting urban environments AND you're specifically a gimbal operator - then that OSS is a huge deal to help get rid of motor and hand micro jitters - getting you close to perfectly smooth movement. The big downside of the Zeiss, especially for gimbals, is that it zooms externally and is heavier than the Sony.
    The Sony on the other hand is also for video operators primarily, but it seems to be more focused on people that would be shooting on the lens traditionally (on sticks or handheld). With the obvious points of power zoom and being parfocal being its major advantages for that style of shooting. Its major downside is the lack of OSS (and I'm also personally not a fan of its out of focus rendering [boke]).
    I'd probably buy the lens based on those use cases above first. The image quality difference is negligible and the price at that level is negligible as well (although $150 isn't nothing).
    The neutral category for both is about what lenses you normally use. Zeiss is well known for its T* coating. If you like the Zeiss look and/or want to pair your lenses to look the same across focal lengths then buying the Zeiss is a no brainer. Let's say as an example you're shooting all on Zeiss Batis, and you want a wide-angle zoom, this is the obvious choice.
    And the same is true of the Sony. Sony has been making more first party lenses to fill in the gaps. So if you wanted to match all of your Sony glass more closely then that's another check mark in Sony's column for you.

    • @Bernartwood
      @Bernartwood 2 года назад

      Exactly... Lack of OSS is a deal breaker for me, as for a filmmaker focussed on filming skiing, running, biking etc on gimbals, following the athletes. Even if the new lens is a bit sharper and PZ woul be nice in some special moments, no thank you. For gimbal use, the OSS is HUGE difference, alsocompared to 16-35 F2,8 GM. Zeis is noticeably more stable in the same type of work.

    Nice!, great lens i think, but it would be very interesting to know if yuo could control the powerzoom from a gimbal directly, that would make it possibly the best gimbal lens out there in that focal range since the size and weight and the fact that the zoom is indeed internal. could you come to know that?

    Dumb question, but would this lens be sufficient to take pictures of northern light?

    Annoyingly here in the UK, the Zeiss is cheaper @ £1150 and the new PZ lens is £1300. I would still go for the PZ lens though.

    CAD $1500 is a lot of money, I'd rather pick up the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 over the F4 and save $500..

      2 very different lenses. The F4 goes to 16mm and 35mm, it's parfocal, no focus breathing, has a power zoom, and super fast AF. I'm sure it can handle the 30fps bursts with the A1 too, it's also much smaller and lighter than the Tamron, and has a ton of controls that the Tamron is lacking. The Tamron does f2.8 though. Just very different lenses.

      And you’d get what you pay for-fewer features, heavier, not parfocal, slower AF.

      Well, yeah I think it can be quite useful for gimbal work. I'm not really into wide-angle stuff, therefore I was thinking that the difference between 16 and 35 isn't something I couldn't compensate with getting closer to an object. I totally see the PZ function for gimbal work in a range between 35-70 maybe 70-100ish - but that's just my pov :)

      I am using this as well. A great lens voor photo and video. Later I bought the 24mm GM but hardly use it because this thing is more versatile and I don’t see much of a difference. Usability of F1.4 is only for specific cases.

      I debated and purchased the Sony 20 1.8 for indoor w/out flash gimbal work. The 20 should be a GM, it’s got the same build quality. Also have a 6400 with Laowa 9 that works extremely well.

    • @wvansluisveld3011

      @@keystonebrotherb in hindsight that would probably have been a better purchase. My 24mm also sometimes generates an unpleasant sound in videos recorded using the internal mic. Not sure why. I had it checked and they concluded it operates as it should. The focus breathing is very prominent as well. The main reason why I got the 24mm is because I was able to obtain it for a good price and for general purpose I like 24mm better. I also have 35mm F1.8 which is great, but it is not my preferred focal length.

    Great looking lens ! but I don't see why sony doesn't make a 15 35 similar to the RF glass.. seems more practical in imo. anyways all their 2nd gen glass is gonna be incredible non the less.

    Hi, did you notice any focus jump/focus pulsating when you close up to the subject with autofocus on with this lens (PZ 16-35mm F4 G)?
    Mine seems to have the issue when I use gimbal to go in closer to the subject's face, it seems to have that zoom pump, but it is actually the focus going error for a very fast milliseconds (or looks like focusing the back of the subject in mine), and then slowly focus back to the subject, and it is quite frequent. Or sometimes it would just make that whole scene to have the shaking stutter effect for a millisecond, I had even set the focus shift sensitivity to the lowest, and it still does the same thing. For the body I'm currently using A7S3.
    Attached here is an example (not my video, but a clip I manage to found online which has the same issue as mine), look at the table at the bottom area and you'll understand what I meant:

    Much appreciated for your replies, thank you.

    I have the 16-35mm gm but the size of it is a problem for handheld video and overall weight when traveling long days hikes. Do you think this new lens is way too inferior in quality or should be just fine for personal photos and few videos? Thanks

    • @lucaslonghurst
      @lucaslonghurst 2 года назад

      @@seblx Yes! If you don't need 2.8 and you're using it on a gimbal then it would be perfect. The balance point doesn't move with the power zoom and it's super sharp and light. Having some extra range at 35mm is nice and if you need bokeh you have your 20mm 1.8. I'd say go for the Sony. It will also hold value better than Sigma although they do make great lenses as well.

    Great Review but I have blown my Lens budget for a while. I got a great deal on a Fujinon MK 15-55 (Super 35) lens and it's purely manual but it is a real Parafocal CINE lens and yes I have to use it in 1.5 Crop which makes it a 28-70 basically but for interviews it a great lens. Also have ordered but haven't received the best overall single lens the Tamron 35-150...
