  • ★ The Sigma 16mm 1.4 Review for Sony E mount ★ Is this the lens that every owner of the a6500, a6300, and a6000 should own? Or is it too good to be true?
    16mm on the Sony APS-C is a fantastic focal range, just wide enough without being ultrawide. Then, keep in mind that f1.4 aperture and you have to know that this lens is going to make a splash. Think it's too good to be true?

    I've bought this lens recently and have been using it for some time with a6400. It sure is great lens. Video looks good even with 4k you can tell the difference. The only problem I have is that it distorts edges with 1.4-1.8. Strangly it shows only with photo, video is ok. Its just a minor issue and its not a problem for me. I like the quite, fast and relible autofocus.
    I'm glad I watched your video.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад +3

      There is a setting in the camera that might correct the distortion automatically. But definitely if you’re editing photos in Lightroom, there is a lens profile to correct that!

    Just subscribed. You include in 2018 info for a6000 which so many people still have and use. You did not stay on specs but even tested and showed stabilization on a real world scenario. A little hyper energy at some points, maybe it's the high tempo of the music. But overall a great useful insight. Thank you

Definitely check that one out!

    this is the best review of this lens, everyone else focus on the video ability of it, but you also touched a lot on the photo side of it, with good examples. • @RiseHigh
      @RiseHigh 6 лет назад +2

      Oh yes, i didn't know you have a gimbal !
      I speak only for myself, but i believe in handeld, haha. I really like the way it feels in the video ( of course if you not shake as a sick guy, but if you know how to be steady enough, and with the stabilization in the a6500, it's just perfect for my kind of cinematic vlog style videos..)
      After my two last video speaking in front of a table inside my flat, i've realized that this is not what i like to do..
      So, i guess everyone has his/her own way to tell stories, mine is outside with my camera in my hand, haha ! See you soon Man ! keep working on your vidéos, they are really great to watch !

    Great video mate! Really helped my decision for my a6400. I've been using the kit lens 18-135mm. It's been quite limiting for my needs. I was looking for something wider that doesn't break the bank. Or try the Sony E - 10-
    18mm. Hmmm? 🤔 Either way. Thanks for this video. Still great 4 years later!

    Just received my copy of this lens today and boy it is good. Extremely sharp even wide open, step it down a couple of notches and its even sharper. I have the A6000 plus the Sigma and I'm very happy with it, it's fantastic for low light situations but sometimes too shallow depth of field if you take a picture of a group at the Christmas dinner table. If you do need to use flash then one minor drawback is that it blocks out the lower left part of the photo so you have to manually tilt the flash a little bit.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah that’s definitely true, the on camera flash only really fully works with tiny lenses. The 16mm is not a large lens in the grand scheme of things but it still gets in the way. I only think I’ve ever used the on camera flash once on any of my Sony cameras though so it definitely hasn’t been an issue for me. Sorry it’s causing trouble for you!

    • @nicolask.3825

    Great review and examples dude! I've had this lens for almost a year now but your thumbnail was too enticing not to click!🙌
    I think the thing I love the most about this lens is the fact that it's SO fast for such a wide lens, that you almost get a full frame aesthetic from the images, despite being on a 1.5x crop.

    Great review. I have this lens for a while now, but never use it to take food photography. Of course, it's not a macro lens, but when I use to take a plate of food, I was surprise that I can do that. I was looking at the new Sigma 18-50 mm for food photos, but maybe this lens would do too.

    I was recently in Japan and thought about buying this lense, but I mostly use my fullframe A7 III and i have a zeiss 16-35, so i allready have this focal length covered, because of that i forgot about this lens pretty quickly. I have a a6300 as a secondary camera and after i saw this video i kind of regret not buing one especially since it is almost 100€ cheaper in Japan (so it just costs 300€ there). At the same time, i think, that i am more interested in a fast prime with this focal length not this lens especially , so i might save up some cash and eventually buy a 24mm 1.4 or similar for my a7.
    (i bought an 50mm 1.1 instead for 250€ wich is a killer deal as well)

  • @MarkHoltze

    Great review! Honestly that focus by wire is what really gets me with the sony lenses (sony or sigma lenses for sony). I'm a video guy so I like to keep my focus on manual when i'm shooting subjects and it definitely takes some getting familiar to using the rings. One thing I love about vintage focusing is it's so predictable. I've found the Canon lenses have a better feel to their focus as well ,but again that's probably mostly because the Sony lenses are relatively new and i'm not 100% comfortable experience wise with them yet.
    I don't quite have a fav lens at this point, I like so many for very different reasons. :)

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks mark! I totally hear what you’re saying, I have the opposite experience. The first camera I bought was the a6000 so all I know is focus by wire. That being said, my focus rings aren’t going to wear out anytime soon with the amount that I use them. I have played a bit with a couple of my Pentax lenses. But for my application it always seems like more of a hassle than anything. I’ve been thinking about challenging myself to make an entire video with only my Pentax 28 and 50 and see how I do!

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze 6 лет назад +1

      Experience is such a critical component for sure. Manual is totally useless if you're shooting yourself that's for sure. Also can be a bit unfriendly if run and gunning like crazy and you just don't have that experience.
      Pretty sure if video shooting from 10-15 years ago had decent auto focus i'd never use manual, but i've just grown so accustomed to it. That puts the AF on the Sony A7SII isn't fantastic ;). I'm pretty jealous of new A7III owners on this regard for sure.
      Great review though man, you gave a well rounded and informed perspective on the lens that gives the audience loads to work with.

      I agree 100% I hate the focus by wire on my 30mm F/1.4 Sigma and even more since I started using older manual lenses which are a joy to use on the Sony's with the focus peaking etc.

      Hahahaha that’s a new one! People have told me I look like him before but never asked if I was the lost brother lol.
      Yeah the 10-18 looks pretty awesome, although sometimes f4 just leaves something to the imagination and doesn’t quite do it for low light. However, a lot of people really love that lens so there must be something to it! I do love my 16mm though so I’d vote for that one! I am definitely going to do some color grading videos in the future! Thanks for asking! And thanks for watching!

    Hi! Thanks for the video.
    You mentioned the lense paired with the a6400 (or other models with no IBIS) should not cause any issues when taking photos. Can you still confirm it after more than a year?
    What would be the closest alternative to The Sigma 16mm but with lense stabilization?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +3

      I use this lens with my a6400 all the time. I also use it for video as long as I’m careful or have it on a tripod. I haven’t been able to find anything similar with OSS except for zoom lenses.

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle 4 года назад +1

      If you watch your shutter speed hand held it's like any other lens on the planet (no problem). It's even less of a problem because it's so wide.

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 3 года назад

      Without IBIS you may just need to use a slightly shorter shutter speed. With 1/60s you should manage always, by being careful and talking several shots if needed you should manage up to 1/15 s or even longer. Also remember that if the subject is moving IS is useless on short focal lengths as you need to use short shutter speed anyway.

      @dunnadidit  6 лет назад +3
