    Thank you for this channel sir. The moment i bought my sony a6000. I was quite perplexed with the specs and the accessories I'm going to buy, but when i search someone on RUclips who is credible and reliable when it comes to sony products and boom... their you are. You made a good quality content in RUclips sir. Looking forward for more. Greetings from Philippines. Keep up the good work. 👌😊

    Just tried my first night using the 16mm lens, it blew my mind totally guys. I was considering selling my trusty a6000 but after shooting last night it's not for sale. This lens is just beautiful, I have never had such sharp results with this camera before and I have used many quality lenses which always left me wondering. Thank you Sigma, you have re-ignited my passion in photography.

    About the distortion - while the wide angle is not optimal for closeup (face) portraits near the edge in general, the barrel distortion itself actually helps from stretching faces/people/groups near sides even more to the corners.

      Use focus peaking with zoom, set ISO to very high and check if your stars are sharp. This is also the technique used with the Sigma 30mm F1.4 for panorama milky way shots. The Sigma 16mm has more control on the focus by wire over the Sigma 30mm.

    I wish they had the 18-35 f1.8 as a native E-Mount or something like a 10-18 with the f-stops somewhere in the neighborhood of constant f2 or f2-2.4 or something like that... just something with a wide open aperture and wide angle. That would be the ultimate vlog lens and to make it even better let it have OIS. That’s my absolute dream lens.

  • @slr7075
    @slr7075 6 лет назад +30

    I wished that it was wider. The 16mm (24mm FF equilivent) won't have the same wide angle effect and perspective as 12mm (18mm FF equilivent) from the Rokinon/Samyang.

    • @windstorm894
      @windstorm894 6 лет назад +1

      Vintage Pictures But no auto focus on the Rokinon/Samyang model is that correct? I always felt it can be difficult even back in the film shooting days using a wide or ultra wide angle lense to get precise focus on a subject unless it is not moving. I mostly shoot urban/street scenes and like stopping down the aperture to f/13 or f/16. All moving subjects or models have to be shot at wide open aperture or at least f/4

    • @psyysp171
      @psyysp171 6 лет назад +6

      Wind Storm everything behind 1-2m or so is sharp at infinity with the Samyang, so unless you are shooting close ups of something, just leave the lens at infinity and forget about focusing

    • @Riceguy01
      @Riceguy01 6 лет назад +1

      Also have to add the crop factor to the aperture. F1.4 full frame and about F2.0 APS-C equivalent

    • @psyysp171
      @psyysp171 6 лет назад

      Riceguy01 really? Crop factor applies to the aperture? How do you calculate the FF-Aperture?

    • @Riceguy01
      @Riceguy01 6 лет назад +1

      Here's a video explaining aperture and crop factor: ruclips.net/video/f5zN6NVx-hY/видео.html
      We have to be careful when buying lenses. If the product doesn't say it's an APS-C lens, then its usually a full frame lens. Be aware of crop factor so you know exactly what you are buying.

  • @pizzablender
    @pizzablender 6 лет назад +1

    Barrel distortion is not bad for portraits. Actually, it helps a bit by compressing the edges.
    What is not good for portraits is a wide angle lens. Things on the side look stretched on a wide angle lens. A fisheye (or barrel distrotion) compress this back a little. Still, you will be too close, making the nose larger than needed.

    I enjoy your videos. When I retired, I started a business taking internet pictures for a large dealership. It got me off the couch which is important having had a couple of heart attacks. No, it's not art but they do want quality pictures. I use an a6500 with this Sigma lens. This lens makes a huge difference on interior shots and the details are really sharp. In a normal day, I take a lot of pictures walking around and climbing in and out of cars so image stabilization is a must. I don't want to re-shoot a vehicle due to a couple of fuzzy pictures. I'm glad you are in Texas.

    I just got this lens on Wednesday and was able to do some photos and video with the Sony A6400. As long as you use the proper shutter speed (i.e. at least 1/x, with x being the same or larger than the focal length) and proper technique I had no issues with good looking photos. As for video shooting, I currently don't have a gimbal but put camera on a JOBY GorillaPod and do the ninja walk - came out pretty nice. Auto focus is great - hits almost all the time.

    I sold my Zeiss 12mm 2.8 Touit and was waiting for this lens......I was not disappointed. It is as this video says, the best lens for my Sony A6500. I love this lens. I have the Sigma 18-35 and love that lens also. With that combo, I am covered on the wide side. The image quality on this lens is phenomenal. It matches the 18-35 and maybe even surpasses it. What I really love about this wide angle lens is that there is very little distortion. Focus is actually quite good as 16mm is not really an issue. It seems that wide angle lenses require less focusing to be usable. Auto focus with this lens works extremely well for a non native lens. Far better than the Zeiss lenses I have owned. I would rate this lens above the Touit line. It is that good.
    Seeing how your video was the first one I saw that made the case to get this lens.....I ordered through your link at B&H. If you are looking for a wide angle lens that does not have massive distortion or other refractive deficiencies, then by all means order this lens......and get it through the link on this video. I highly recommend and love this lens.

      Hello, , I have an a6500 and this 16mm sigma lens looks great. Have you considered making a comparison with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 side by side in video with the a6500,6300, etc.? I would love to see it because I am going to buy a cardan, and I plan to buy it for two reasons, weight and cardan balance, but I do not know if it's a good idea because the difference in focal length is just 3mm (24vs27mm). This adds to that in continuous autofocus are similar and that the ART series is superior makes me doubt a lot and it is that a friend has recommended me the samyang AF-14mm 2.8 FE but it is more expensive.

    You prefer this over your other favorite, a Sony 35 1.8? I would think the 35 is a more useful focal length.

    Would you recommend this lens over the 30mm sigma or 35mm from Sony as a 1st lens coming from the kit lens? I was going for one of the two but seeing this new lens I might just get the 16mm... what’s the best advice?

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  6 лет назад

      Depends on if you want a wide angle or more of a portrait/street lens. All 3 are great options, the Sigmas are sharper than the Sony 35, the Sony better for video.

      the are really different focal lenghts... the 16mm is more like "always on" and for everything pretty good, while the 30mm is nice for portraits and that stuff... id go with the 16mm

      Frozn Fire should I sell my sigma 30mm to get the 16mm and use my Sony 35mm?

    • @froznfire9531
      @froznfire9531 5 лет назад +2

      i mean if u got a 35, then the 16mm would be much better i guess... i guess u have the sony 35 f1.8? i cant advise you to sell the 30, but i would defnetly do it... the 16mm is only 100 more than it, and 16mm is a great focal range, combined with that f1.4, it gives u amazing bokeh and lowlight... and the sony isnt to bad from what i heard, it just depends what u want to do with your camera, maybe u dont need more wideangle lenses.. think about that and u can always rent stuff to test it, if u arent sure. ;) hope i could help you

    • @djwilmer7252

      77, I purchased mine directly from the Sigma website. Because the refurbished ones come from Sigma with all new packaging and a critical review and testing that matches the Sigma reputation, I had confidence in buying it "used" - something I had never done in the past. The good news also, besides appearing in every way brand new, it was $339 delivered. Mine is for the MFT mount.

      Yes. Especially because you have in-body stabilization with the A6500. The Sony 35mm and this Sigma 16mm are my two favorite lenses at the moment.

    1) Please test the kit telephoto lens and explore other telephoto options.

    Thanks!

    The main drawback for this lens is its purpose. It's not a wide angle (24mm equivalent), it's not a portrait lens. I just can't imagine a case when I would choose this lens over the 30mm.

    Very helpful review! Just one thing : should I use UV filter with this lens? Considering that it's a 16 mm lens and therefore has a great chance of having even more vignetting with UV filter on.

      Alexandru Stefan Duta I keep it at 2.0 at least, but 2.8 - 4.0 seems to give the sharpest results.

    Hi there, just lost my A6000 on a bus while traveling. Still looks like it's the best buy for the price. I do like video and landscape/nature photography and video.. Would you still recommend buying a new A6000 and could a combo of Sigma 16mm 1.4 + Sony 18-105mm 4 be a good choice?
    Cheers and thanks for great reviews!!

    I am looking forward to Dxo mark reviewing and rating this lens. Too bad they never reviewed the Rokinon 12mm so we could see the on paper sharpness scores. I have the Rokinon and I am still not ready to give up the 12mm focal length. Great job on the review though. The images and the video look awesome.
