Thanks for clearing up the autofocus question thats been burning a hole in my brain. Have found the Sigma to E mount adapter was somewhat of a wasted investment as autofocus does not work with older sigma lenses, of which I have quite a few, early christmas present to myself coming up :)
Hello, very useful vid! I have a Rokinon 35mm f1.2 that I want to use with my Sony A7III. What shooting process would you recommend? To shoot in 4K and then crop it on post to remove the “vignetting”? Or shoot at once with the cam's crop mode?
Hands down, to this true teacher, my today's frustration got the perfect answer I was looking for. I ordered Sigma 30mm 1.4 in hastiness (having years of experience in photography, but first time jumping into full-frame space)
Can confirm, using Sigma 56mm on A7RIII having 18mp in Crop mode. Sharpness and bokeh are outstanding. Lens is recognised as Aperture 1.4, so sensors gets a lot of light. Bokeh on Sony Crop mode is converted from 1.4 (x1.5 sensor size) to 2.2 - but still, very blurry background. Cheapest way to have full frame ISO capability pared with 85mm wide open look. Will now go for the sigma 16mm 1.4 instead of sony 24 1.4 GM ;)
Yeah, but that's not really the lens you should compare it with. How does it compare to the Sony 85mm 1.8? For example? Or Samyang 85mm? They dont cost much more than the Sigma, but I think they are still better.... Also has better DOF (the sigma will be ~f2.1 after the crop).
Not sure why you'd compare a 56mm to an 85mm. The same crop factor is applied to the 85 so you'll never be getting the same image on the same camera. Unless you're talking about 56mm on apsc vs 85mm on full frame?

Yeah it'll give you the same aesthetic as an 84mm at f2.1. That's not to say it lets any less light in, it's still a f1.4 lens but in terms of the aesthetic equivalence you'd have to stop down an 85mm full frame lens to f2.1 to make the frames look similar
@@dodmedia Yea, I am thinking about it! The only downside is that it is very big and heavy for gimbal. I mean it will work but your hands will be tired soon.

Hi tanks for your interesting video. One question. What you think of the idea to use the Sigma trinity (16mm - 30mm - 56mm) on the new A7C in full frame mode? Using the camera handheld, stabilizing the clips in Catalyst You get a crop that, more or less, will “compensate” the vignetting. Same effect of using full frame lenses on the A7C but at a fraction of the price. Tell me your opinion. Tanks
Hi Andrea, I think shooting in full frame and then cropping in in post is fine but I wouldn't want to do it with every shot. You would be better off stabilizing the camera rig when shooting if your plan is to stabilize in post anyway. That price difference will cost you in image quality instead of money.

It'll make the megapixel count lower because it's cropping into the sensor to fit the apsc lens projection. So smaller resolution. But as far as image quality, yes absolutely it'll still make an amazing image quality. If you use the aspc crop mode on the a7iii, is it the same view as if you used the lens on a A6400? (Cropped 1.5) wouldn't make sense to go full frame if the lenses give same shot as my A6400
It would be the same yeah. But the benefit of full frame is you can get away with a smaller crop factor. On the 56mm I was able to almost go to 1.3x instead of 1.5x
It’s more the convenience. The Primes will still be overall sharper and faster. Even on Full Frame your getting an F2 equivalent or so while also spending about $200-400 less. I’d have to look up if the 3 are still lighter than the 24-70 as that’s a heavy boy. More about convenience and personal style of shooting.
Exactly. For me I would almost always opt for primes but I know a lot of people would rather work with fewer zoom lenses instead of more primes. It's just about finding the balance between what you like, what you want, and what you need.
So if I use the sigma 30mm on my full frame Sony a7m1 and switch to Apsc mode, then I won’t get the vignette I will get a cropped image, roughly equivalent to 45mm?
Would I need to buy an adapter for the Sony A7 to still use this lens? I just recently bought the Sony A7 and I currently have the Sony a6000 I'm curious to kno if I have to buy an adapter to use my lenses on the Sony A7.. Anyone 🙏🏾
Yeah to me it sort of depends on whether you plan to output in 4k or if you plan to output in 1080 and want the resolution to punch into for different crops. Though I guess you could argue that you can do that with clear image zoom too 😅
Hi, I'm planning to buy 16mm and one portrait lens. I'm too too confused b/w 30mm & 56mm. I want to know few things from you on 30mm vs 56mm, Except the focal length , are the any major differences in these 2 lens in terms of autofocus speed and sharpness. 16mm is 400$ , 56mm is also 400$ but 30mm is sold at 260$. I want to know if there any specific drawback of 30mm when compared to 56mm.
30 was released a year earlier so they went back to fix it's sharpness on the 56. Pincushion is handled better on the 56mm. The 16mm and 56mm are great ( I own all three)
That's a little different. So the aesthetic of your image will change because you'll need to move your subject further away to achieve the same framing so your depth of field will be wider. But the actual aperture of the lens won't change. It will still be an f1.4 lens

Yup, exactly.

Mannnnn I’ve been looking for a video to explain this to me because I had no idea size mattered..... 🙂😂
Would I need to buy an adapter for the Sony A7 to still use this lens? I just recently bought the Sony A7 and I currently have the Sony a6000 I'm curious to kno if I have to buy an adapter to use my lenses on the Sony A7.. Anyone 🙏🏾
Nope you would just mount it like any other E mount lens 👍
@@dodmedia sweet, thank you 👊🏾
Does using clear image zoom reduce quality of photos anyway...¿¡" or better to crop during pp...
As I understand it, you're better using super35 mode than cropping, but then you lose flexibility to crop differently in pp
The answer is yes… and no… yep those are the options😂😂
Finally I a good answer for this question
Fantastico!! 👏👏
56mm works great after a little vignette reduction
Right??
Is this lens work with lumix s1?
Yes
why do they call it a 16mm if it is designed for apsc, but you are never getting 16mm on apsc?
Maybe it is important to inform that it will be about 10 MP instead of 24mp
I could also explain why 99% of people don't need above 8MP.
@@dodmedia yes
Yeah, Using the Clear Image Zoom to remove the Vignette might be a better choice over all with no performance hit.
Yeah to me it sort of depends on whether you plan to output in 4k or if you plan to output in 1080 and want the resolution to punch into for different crops. Though I guess you could argue that you can do that with clear image zoom too 😅
Nice video. To the Point. No. B.S.
The 16mm and 56mm are great ( I own all three)
No.
(not without crop mode. So its pretty useless)
Great informative video though.
I think not just focal length are crop by factor of 1.5, so as aperture too will crop into 1.8. Correct me if wrong.
That's a little different. So the aesthetic of your image will change because you'll need to move your subject further away to achieve the same framing so your depth of field will be wider. But the actual aperture of the lens won't change. It will still be an f1.4 lens
DOD Media I did a test recently and a 1.4 apsc lens had similar bokeh as a 2.8 full frame. Apsc at 2.8 looked more like 4 fstop.
Did you keep subject and camera in exactly same place? The bokeh should be identical unless you move it further away to achieve the same framing
🙌🙌

or just remove the rear baffle on the lens and you get 90% full frame
I got my great shot with this lens, and the results is fantastic at my RUclips channel new video, all footage filmed with Sony A6400 +sigma 16mm with Cine4 PP.
