Been watching camera and lens reviews like a hound since purchasing my first camera for family photos/videos (A7C on its way!), and I have to say your color grade here really stands out, I love it. Great work!
The reality is, I believe you can only do that sensor cropping on a Sony full frame camera. A Canon full frame will not allow you to change to an APS-C crop. Nor can you place an EF-S crop lens on a full frame camera. Hence the reason why I have now left Canon (after 10 years) and I’m now proudly using a new a7III. What a gorgeous camera that is!!
All Canon EF lenses and DSLR have the exact same mount. EF-S is not a different mount, the 'S' just tells that it is a crop lens. There are many people out there shooting with full frame lenses on the 80D. Still the problem remains, that you cannot switch to crop mode on Canon DSLR. Maybe they implememt it on the upcoming mirrorless cameras.
I've been using Canon for about that amount of time. I can't believe how much money I put into Canon. They have really just let themselves go by the wayside. I can't get rid of my gear fast enough, mainly the bodies I own. I got to admit they still do have some very nice glass. Even when adapted with the MC-11 I really do like Canon glass.
@@hazelvee2527 actually, Canon’s crop EOS lenses (EF-S) won’t mount on a Canon full frame (EF) camera. However, 3rd party crop lenses for EF mount usually can be used on both.
I also have a A7III, since A7III’s 4K 30p is cropped anyway, when you use a crop lens you won’t even need to switch to crop mode, I tested it with Sigma 30mm F2.8. (4K 24p is still cropped).
Thanks a million! I had no idea there was a turn on Zoom feature with in use APS-C turn on I now don't need a more zoom lens. I have the kit Sony 28-70mm with my Sony A7ii.
With a zoom lens, the size of the image circle changes when zooming. Some time back, I used a crop zoom lens on my full frame camera and, when zoomed in, pretty much the entire sensor area was exposed. I did some minor cropping in post and was very happy with the images. If you intend to edit your pictures, there's no downside to shooting in full frame mode as long as you remember, when shooting, that some of your image will be affected by vignetting and/or distortion in the corners. (Corner sharpness and geometry are never as good as are center sharpness and geometry, regardless of lens.) On a mirrorless camera, you'll see the vignetting in your viewfinder and have a reasonably good idea of how much cropping you'll need to do in post.
Wow straight and to the point with good examples by switching to the 16mm in crop and ff mode. Thank you. This vid helped. So why are so many people against using an APS-C lens on FF? IQ looks fine in your video and from other stills that I've seeing online.
I try to make these videos as useful as possible so glad it helped! The main reason is the drop in MP, you don’t get to use the full sensor so only have 10mp.. that’s the biggest one to be honest!
Great video, thank you so much! 🥳 Does shooting in full frame mode and then cropping in post production provide exactly the same image quality as shooting in crop mode right away?

One thing I've noticed with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 on my A7C. If shooting in 30fps it has very little vignette. 30fps give a 1.2 crop (19mm) rather than the 1.5 crop (24mm) of apsc mode

Hey! I sold the Sigma 16mm F1.4 and actually just re-bought it for using with my A6300 again. It can def be confusing until you wrap your head around it. All APS-C cameras actually shoot at a crop, so despite the Sigma 16mm being a 16mm on paper/on the box, as soon as you put it on your A6300/6500 its actually a 24mm. Same goes when you put it on the A7iii, it will default to crop/APS-C mode and display as a 24mm too (the same as viewed on your A6500) You have the option to view it at native on the A7iii at 16mm but there's a huge amount of vignetting. Hope that makes sense!

Hey Chris, hope all is well? I’m in the market for a new wide lens. I’m a Tamron user and I love my 28-75. However, with the 17-28 on the market I was interested in that. My question is, which should I consider? tamron 17-28 $899 vs sigma 16 mm 1.4 $399. The sigma is more affordable for me but I am willing to go for the tamron. Which is better or would you recommend. Thank you. Ps I shoot with a Sony A7iii
I recently upgraded from the a6500 to a7iii and loving Full Frame but trying to decide if I should keep my a6500 as a backup/ dedicated video cam or sell it (with Sigma 16mm f1.4 & Sony 18-105mm f4) and buy the Rx100 vi with its 24-200mm f2.8-4.5. telephoto range (I have no telephoto lens currently for full frame)? Currently doing portrait, events and real estate and doing ok so far with one dedicated camera but not sure if rx100 vi would be a sufficient enough 2nd camera for paid gigs as the a6500, or if I'll even need a 2nd camera as the a7iii is a beast. Do you still have your a6300 and does it get much use? Any advice is welcome. Cheers Chris, I really enjoy your videos!
Hey! I still use my a6300 as a B can with my A7iii... will eventually upgrade it to something else but for now still works a tread. Only issue is the colour science between the two is quite different, on the a7iii it’s substantially better
Awesome! I was afraid if I go for full frame after aps-c I won't use my lenses. But considering they only add 1.5 that ain't a problem. Anyway, thanks for the awesome explanation.
So if i have a 56mm lens for made to work on my APS-C Sony camera. Then the focal length is 56mm not 1.5 times that correct. Now once I mount that same 56mm lens on my Full Frame Sony camera and switch to APS-C mode multiply the 56mm by 1.5 to get a 84mm. To repeat this 56mm lens built for my APS-C camera has the focal length of 56mm and not 84mm as on my full frame camera. Correct?
Hi Chris, great video, but just wondering, does the aperture experience any cropping of such sort? Was thinking of the 16-70mm f4 Zeiss on my a7iii as a travel lens
Hi Chria. When using aps-c mode on my a7riv. There are 2 verticak lines on left and right on the screen. I didn't see on your screen instead of horizontal lines. Anyway to turn oof the vertical lines on my screen?
Could you make another video on this topic but with more sample pictures and videos? I have the sigma 16mm and love it, but I plan to get the Sony a7iii very soon and do not want to sell all of my apc lenses.
HD EDITS I hear ya, currently in the process of moving everything to full frame.. I ultimately didn’t want to either but you get so much more with full frame lenses!
Does apsc mode effect the aperture? Usually when using a f1.8 on the a6500, theoretically you only get around f2.7 because of the 1.5 X factor. does the same apply to the a7iii when cropping in? Haven’t been able to find the answer anywhere! And my camera hasn’t come yet ☹️
TomLee f1.8 on the a6500 is still f1.8 not 2.7. The crop factor only affects the DoF not the exposure. As for crop mode, I'd assume f1.8 would behave like an f1.8 lens on an APSC camera.
Tech Enthusiast I didn’t say it effects the exposure. It multiplies the focal length and aperture by 1.5X. on the camera it will still say 1.8, however you are getting the true aperture of f2.7.
TomLee Focal length and aperture are the same regardless if you're using it on aps-c or FF. The field of view captured by the sensors is different. Depth of field is influenced by distance to subject, so to capture the same image on a FF sensor as an aps-c, you'd have to move closer to the subject to obtain identical framing. This then would change the depth of field.
Derek Bailey obviously it doesn’t change the physical focal length, a 35mm lens will be a 35mm lens regardless of what body it’s on, however the sensor size determines a different focal length, along with aperture. take 2 images, one at f1.8 FF and another at 1.8 APSC, the depth of field will not be as out of focus on the APSC as on the full frame.
Hi Chris, Thanks for the explanation :) I just wonder If Im using crop mode, how would It affect the MP (Mega Pixel)? will it downscale to 16MP (24MP / 1.5 times)? Thank you :)
James Morris Anything that existed like that wouldn’t yield great results or image quality unfortunately.. also don’t think it would be possible. With a full frame all the benefits come from the bigger sensor, no way around that, sorry!
Definitely the video I was looking for. Thank you.
Best one I have seen far. Only 4 minutes and it tells you everything you want to know about this topic.

Hey! I still use my a6300 as a B can with my A7iii... will eventually upgrade it to something else but for now still works a tread. Only issue is the colour science between the two is quite different, on the a7iii it’s substantially better
Will this work on canon full frame ?. Will canon 5d mark ii automatically cropt the image ?
Hiw do you change to crop mode on something like an a7ii
Awesome! I was afraid if I go for full frame after aps-c I won't use my lenses. But considering they only add 1.5 that ain't a problem. Anyway, thanks for the awesome explanation.
라사 the lenses will always be useful 👊🏻 glad I made it simple to understand for you and appreciate the feedback!!
Great video! Thanks for the instruction!
Welcome! Another one like this coming soon 😜
I still don’t know which of my lenses are full frame and which are apsc, would love if you answered!
Herbal Giles I know! I just bought a Sony 16mm and didn’t notice it was apsc 😖😖😖😖
At least Sony calls their Full Frame lenses “FE” (=Fullframe E-mount). For other manufacturers, you’ll have to check the product description
Correct?
Very informative video! 😊 What about the noise? Is the footage more noisy if you’re on crop mode w/ apsc lens?
Very little difference, unless you are in super low light 😊
Thanks Chris! 😊 This is a big help for me!
But can you switch a manual asp-c to crop mode
Thank you! Makes sense
how about the image resolution result if using crop mode....smaller size in megapixel ?.
Thanks for this! I'll keep using my a6500 lenses for my a7iii for a little bit longer 👌
Yep, they still will work great!
nice!!!
so image quality at aps c mode, from a7iii with 16mm f1.4 sigma is better
from a6500 with 16mm f1.4 or are the exactly the same?
It’s going to be hard to tell the difference
Could you make another video on this topic but with more sample pictures and videos? I have the sigma 16mm and love it, but I plan to get the Sony a7iii very soon and do not want to sell all of my apc lenses.
HD EDITS I hear ya, currently in the process of moving everything to full frame.. I ultimately didn’t want to either but you get so much more with full frame lenses!
Good info and good video - thanks!
Eugene V. Blas thanks man!!
if we put apsc mode on a7111 will it make any difference i mean vignette will vanish?
I got this 16 1.4 for video on my a7r3 and its great
yup! for video its a great choice
TomLee not too sure of the answer to that, sorry!
Derek Bailey obviously it doesn’t change the physical focal length, a 35mm lens will be a 35mm lens regardless of what body it’s on, however the sensor size determines a different focal length, along with aperture. take 2 images, one at f1.8 FF and another at 1.8 APSC, the depth of field will not be as out of focus on the APSC as on the full frame.
dude! thanks! can you let us know how many megapixeles and what is the resolution of a picture taked in apsc mode?
In crop mode 12mp. For video, it’s still 4K 😎
Thanks Chris! One thing I always wondered about using crop mode... Does it retain the DOF of the FF sensor?
no
One of the advantages of using a crop lens on an A7iii over A6000 or A6300 is that you get IBIS.
this is true!
Cheers mate, Saved me loads of cash on telephoto lenses from my a7II the quality loss isn't that bad
good to hear Hurley!
Hi Chris, Thanks for the explanation :)
I just wonder If Im using crop mode, how would It affect the MP (Mega Pixel)? will it downscale to 16MP (24MP / 1.5 times)? Thank you :)
Hey! thanks for watching. For images it drops to a 10MP image.
Thanks for the clarification Chris ^^
welcome!
Thank you! Just came from a video telling me that this was impossible.
Is there an adaptor that I can fit to my Sony A7 to make the APS-C lens full frame? Thanks for the video BTW
James Morris Anything that existed like that wouldn’t yield great results or image quality unfortunately.. also don’t think it would be possible. With a full frame all the benefits come from the bigger sensor, no way around that, sorry!
Thank you for that explanation
Cheers Sam!
