The problem with telugu & north audience is they are expecting king raja raja chola to do naatu naatu dance 😂

I am a Mexican with no back knowledge of all this, went with an Indian friend. Didn't think it was too complicated story at all. Very realistic, 0 annoying drama

For those who haven't read the novel.. it would be really difficult to understand the nuances and the depth of each character just by watching the movie. The film wouldn't work outside TN.. only very few non Tamils will understand the movie. But for some one like me who have had read the novel twice and listened the same novel in audiobook format, the film is an absolute blast. It's a treat and celebration of one of the greatest literary works in Tamil culture...

For me PS1 is far far ahead compared to Bahubali or RRR or Brahmasthra .But the prerequisite is that you should at least go through the eighth graders history book about chola dynasty and its territories or read up a bit before going in .And this movie is not for passive viewing .Every minute demands attention so that you are in pace with the story .Beauty of this story is that you see real people here who are strong and equally weak.Tired of good men who are good in everything and flaunt a six pack

I dont agree with the crticism of the action. I found it natural. The movie deserved to be celebrated more.

This film is what happens when you don't underestimate the audience. I just watched the film. Not having read the book or seen the reviews, i went there without any previous knowledge. I must say i was completely immersed in the story and the world. It was a great part 1 for introducing the characters, giving a glimpse of who they are, while hinting at their relationships and past. Beautiful wonderful film, fleshed out characters, intense emotions.

I am not a South Indian, but we saw the Tamil version, here in the US, with English subtitles. I have also never read the books and went into the movie with only a basic knowledge of the plot. And was completely blown away! This was a Mani Ratnam movie with his signature style, the focus on the characters and their inter-relationships so beautifully shown that we feel like we know them intimately. Even the war scenes actually worked for me because of the rawness, fitting with the vibe of the movie. Personally, I believe making them more sophisticated would have taken away that intimacy. All in all, even not knowing the story, I thoroughly enjoyed what was shown to me and can’t wait for the sequel.

Eka Lakhani ( costumes ) and Pratiksha Prashant ( jewellery ) deserve all the praise in the world. Everything, from the colour of the fabric to the material of the body armor was portrayed quite accurately. The use of specific Shaivite motifs in the jewellery worn by Cholas was also very noteworthy. I will go out on a limb to say that these two departments have done a very very competent job and should be recognised worldwide.

It is a masterpiece..dont underestimate it..If Rajamauli is a great filmmaker then Maniratnam is a great Storyteller...I am absolutely in awe of Vikram's performance..When he is on the screen he simply owns it..No doubt he is one of the greatest actors..He deserves more accolades

My exact thoughts. I really loved Karthi in this film and it's great to see Aishwarya in a complex role. She really looked like a goddess. I actually loved the slow burn aspect of this film as I think the story required it. However I kind of got confused with the character relations as there were many of them. Since Sri Lanka is a major part of this story, I did find some flaws in some of its portrayals (I am a Sri Lankan btw). The Buddhist monks and the temples that are shown in the movie are much aligned with Mahayana Buddhism which is commonly practiced Thailand . In Sri Lanka it is Theravada Buddhism. The temple structures are very different to that of those in Sri Lanka. Also The Kings costumes could have done better. Btw King Mihindu is played by a very talented Sri Lankan actor. His Name is Shyam Fernando. So glad to see him even its a small role 😊. Also if you notice the end credits right before the acting cast , you will see a name called Prasanna Vithanage under speacial thanks. He is an award winning Sri Lankan director. There is a film called With You, Without You (its available to rent on youtube) directed by Prasanna starring Shyam Fernando and your very own Anjali Patil. An excellent film. Another fun fact Sreekar Prasad edited three of Prasanna Vithanage's films including the one I mentioned above.

Vikram's acting here should be a benchmark for newcomers, in how to express more with minimal space. He portrays anger and pain just with his eyes and doesn't depend on long ass monologues.

As a American. I really enjoyed the movie! Sure I had issues following it cause I was never able to read the book. I will have to re-watch to get a better understanding but other than that. Awesome movie! Can't wait for 2nd one.

One thing I loved about ps 1 is how the two leading ladies aish and Trisha have major stakes in the story
