I had to watch Interstellar and inception twice/thrice to understand the movies fully. I watched PS1 in theatres and it's so aesthetically Beautiful but couldn't keep up with the names in the end. Have to watch this again to understand. It's not like that as it's genre that makes audience invested and interested to see movies more than once. People won't have trouble understanding Inception or interstellar or avatar. It's fun and engaging and visual experience. If its history based movies then people saying cannot follow blah blah is only due to lack of interest in subject no matter how good it is. If any other historic hollywood movies released in India then definitely it would be flop because again probably no one is interested in history and culture.

    • @sivasurya2829

@@Finnola ever heard of the movie once upon a time in hollywood? The movie's plot was more and more related to the golden age of hollywood where Sharon tate's murder was the main story. People didn't connect at the first time but then when the audience started to know that the charecters were real but the story is fictional people started their crash course on what the golden age of hollywood was and started to praise the movie by watching it again and again. Why can't we do the same for ps 1 where the charecters are real but story is a fictional one which had a realistic touch like once upon a time in hollywood. Secondly the charecters name, people watch Korean movies like chaser where it's hard to remember their names but still watch it and praise but when it comes to a South Indian movie nah they would just keep it aside and remember movies are not only about the visual experience the camera work and art direction has been praised by every reviewers

Like I said people will see again and again or get informed based on their interests. Once...in Hollywood is not history as in learning about ancient civilizations in this case Chola empire. The source of ponniyin selvan itself is based on that so its readers will definitely be informed and that is the right audience for the film. India is so diverse that it's impossible for every audience to find a movie like this relatable. It's nothing to do with being biased and not appreciating ponniyin selvan. Sometimes a movie will earn the right audience and its not big deal whether these 2 critics and others like them don't get it.

Do not understand the strange reception that North Indians are giving PS-1. Even the critics are acting as if they have never seen a film outside of their cultural context before. One wonders if they are only capable of appreciating Bollywood and Hollywood affairs and anything else is too "alien" for them. I'm North Indian and have not read the books, but I really enjoyed the film. Yes, I do lack sufficient cultural knowledge to fully understand everything going on in this film, but isn't that why we watch movies -- to explore worlds different from ours? In fact, it's quite nice to see a film with such a strong cultural identity. The world building here is superb; as soon as the movie starts, you feel like you've been dropped right in the middle of an ongoing conflict and you watch most of the film trying to bring yourself up to speed with the various locations, characters, and their histories. The 3-hour run time goes by pretty fast as there's always something interesting going on at any given moment. Most of the characters are interesting enough to make an impression in the few key scenes they do get, which makes you want to see more of them in PS-2. Like a lot of other North Indians, I too struggled with keeping up with the names and the several conspiracies that were happening all at once, but the main narrative was easy enough to follow. I look forward to watching the film again in order to understand certain details that I didn't catch on my first watch (I wouldn't even call it the film's fault; sometimes my brain can't process things quick enough. The film does its job of explaining all the details if you take note of everything being said). It's actually exciting to have a movie that's both dense and fun enough to deserve a second watch. Generally, I do not watch commercial Indian movies because they tend to be artless and goofy, so I would have been the first person to call this film crap if it were that, but PS-1 genuinely seems to respect its audience. It's not a mind-blowing masterpiece, but it's a pretty solid film.

The problem I think with people getting confused due to Ponniyin Selvan is the same reason why people score low marks in History....History is complicated keeping track of names, place and dates..The mainstream Historical movies that we got until now haven't been remotely complex as there original stories...they focus on glorifying the hero and downgrading the villain and present a simple bland easy to follow story... Therefore when a movie like PS comes out which rejects the conventional way and focuses on its wide range of characters, people get lost...This is not the movie's problem it is the problem of people's attention span...And as we know the Tamilans or overseas people had no problem whatsoever following the movie..and we can't expect that people overseas have read the novel...

He stayed true to the essence of novel and has struck chord with Tamil audience which is more than enough. Not all movies can become pan indian and not possible to appeal to everyone. Thx for Honest review on PS1, As I watched it could have been made better(Read 1st part in book) but should appreciate the effect as it is not easy to co-host these many artists for a single movie in Kollywood . Only few can do , Maniratnam is one of them. It really feels more rush in moving scenes as he wants to combine 5 parts into 2 Movies. It has to be made at least 3 Movies. How ever this movie will be stepstone for upcoming historical movies (in Tamil) as people given a good response..Hats off to Mani and the team

I too think that Ponniyin Selvan should be made in series instead of two part movie to let the characters marinate in the storyline. Alwarkadiyan presence is limited in the movie where as he is the one who always appears where ever Vandiyardevan goes. To the extend that Vandiyandevan gets vexed and starts feeling that Alwarkadiyan is stalking him. Also Vandiyardevan has such a bad luck that he literally keeps falling from frying pan to fire in every other situation which leads to situational comedy of errors which couldn't come thru in the movie. And the conspiracy of the Ministers and the Pandyas and Nandini's involvement and her association with the Pandyas is barely explored in movie. Thru series people could understand that Cholas were ardent devotees of Shiva and Pandyas were Vishnavites. The secret behind Cholas winning many wars was their war tactics, the cannons used and use of Elephants who overpowered the Infantry and Cavalry. The supremacy of Cholas Navy was something to awe at, this cannot be explained in Movie format. The last scene where Nandini takes out the Fish shaped Sword it gave me goosebumps, but sadly even the significance of the sword was lost on most of the audience as no one is aware that Pandyas symbol was Fish which is based on Vishnu's Matsya Avatar.

Hey, Fellow central Indian here. I have seen both versions of the film and I honestly felt Pushkar & Gayatri compromised that sweet sweet subtlety over style ratio of the original movie to crack the North Indian audience. Sethupathi's calm collected demeanor made his requests (calling him sir) a bit more sincere coming despite losing everything which is crazy, he always had that subtle edge over Vikram because of his street smarts that felt grounded and justified his mind games on the hand Hrithik's vedha always had agressive swagger going on along with him seeming dominant over Saif in every frame which didn't fit the plot thematically. When Saif and Hritik fight in the rain it always felt as if Hritik could finish this guy off and leave for breakfast but he is potrayed vulnerable which again didn't fit. Same goes for Saif, there are shots where he shoots bad guys and seems like a forced to be reckoned with but when he talks he seems like a crooked trigger happy guy while Madhavan's portrayal felt hardened, disciplined and most importantly determined. I felt Hindi was barely 3/5 while the original triumphs with 4/5 for me.
