i mean its pretty obvious. Malayalam films have always had superior movies (in terms of stories and acting and script) when compared to other film industries in India for a long long time now..
The mid 60s-70s emergent art-house scene and the then new wave 80s golden era where art and commercial styles was successfully integrated while every other film industry couldn't even understand what it meant. The 2 Big Ms rise and peak with great writers-directors and supporting actors and now the 2010- present day New wave Renaissance. Only the 2000-2010 decade was dark days for us in the last 50 years or so when the 80s era started stagnating and rotting.
But yea otherwise if u strip the budget factor away Malayalam cinema has always been superior to others and Malayalees should be the last people surprised about it.

And kudos to the confidence of Prithviraj to go on such a stage and vow before the greats that he ll put Malayalam cinema on the global map. Recently, Anupam Kher bought the remake of another Odia Film Pratikshya and I cannot Emphasize how I have been wanting Odia Film industry to grow from mindless and remake films and make a name of its own. There are definitely directors with vision but Bollywood is very risk averse. The producers in Bollywood don't like betting their money on anyone that doesn't guarantee a win. Otherwise, directors like Anurag Kashyap and Anubhav Sinha can make some great cinema if they get backing from the money people. But people don't give them money and don't trust their conviction after just one big failure.

@S A I totally understand your point... But let me tell you, in my little experience of whatever Indian cinema is... Malayalam cinema just need one big film to give it a positioning.
Rorschach and Churuli are good films no doubt but by going by today's market dynamics the collection may not be that much.. Understanding majority Indian audience wants to hoot and cheer but "for a reason" (by the way I'm watching Kooman right now 30 minutes in)
Give them 1 such film to draw you in, let it be the eye puller and then anyway you have these good rooted movies which will sustain them to watch Malayalam movies.
Why do we want to emulate a Korean cinema.. If an RRR tries to be something else, hasn't the authenticity of the masala genre being wronged??
Please accept all kinds of cinema as cinema..

      We have high temperatures here

      How stupid statement it was??
With such humidity even women's didn't use to wear jacket those times.
Our kings use to cover their upper body completely with golden ornaments.
      Same culture came for us,

20:00 Regarding Prithvi's answer, it is exactly the less screentime of Mohanlal's character that gives meaning to the film. Stephen Nedumbally is a character of mystery and intrigue. The less we know about him, the more intriguing and interesting he becomes. Even though we see less of him, compared to the length of the film, his presence is everywhere in the film. And, it all comes down to the brilliant design of the screenplay by Murali Gopy along with Prithvi's direction.

That said it all by itself, if the content is great theatres will be pakced across boundaries. Kudos to the great filmmakers from south India for making 2022 an extravaganza of Indian cinema across the planet.

This is a good talk filled with very intelligent and accomplished people overall amazing but 12:30 I don't understand how these very intelligent people cannot grasp that Hindi cinema encompasses a region of over 1.4 billion people including the Urdu speaking Pakistanis, Dari speaking Afghanis who grew up watching Bollywood cinema as the afghans had no large homegrown industry, Nepalis who similarly had no homegrown industry capable of competing with Bollywood and Bangladeshis who prefer to watch bollywood films over their own films...while all 4 of the southern industries have to compete for a region of 270 million... It's unfathomable how much more of an audience Hindi cinema has yet still these 4 smaller regional cinema industries are capable of producing films that are even bigger hits... Same with the "overseas" market he was talking about and how he was wondering how hindi cinema has captured it? Theirs over 18 million Hindi speakers outside of South Asia including overseas pakistanis and populations like Fiji or the millions of Punjabis and Biharis who were taken as indentured servants and are now large populations in South Africa, Trinidad, Guyana, Mauritius... The overseas population of South Indians outside of South Asia is barely a third of that. Their is no comparison it's insane how much the 4 regional cinemas are overperforming compared to how much Hindi cinema is underperforming.

This unique identity was created by only two Indian directors. They are SSR and Prashant Neel
