I can't thank you enough for this piece of advice. I have always struggled with these shots. I played 9 holes today and had 3 shots like this next to greens. All three stopped within 3 feet of the hole, with 1 almost dropping in!! Cheers!!
Chris, I had to search through all of your chipping videos to find this one, and I am so glad that I did. your first 2 demonstrations looked like all of my shots. Ever since I found this video I have been able to stay on the green on my 3rd or 4th shot and have taken quite a few strokes off. Thanks
Excellent advice, by far the best explanation of set up and execution of this difficult shot I've ever seen.
I am 60 years old and just started playing. Your videos are great, thank you, they help a lot.
The golf club is a tool, same as the ones in the shed. Loved this video. The V versus the U striking angle was the key for me. Thank you!
I liked how to showed the mistakes first before showing the correct way. Thanks!
Great tips! Cannot wait to try. Faced that shot quite often aroun the Greens and got dismal results. Thanks.
Perfect instruction. I hit about 6 shots yesterday doing the 1st thing you mentioned, the ball going nowhere. I will definitely try your suggested technique tomorrow. Thanks Chris.
Nice teaching delivery. I related to every mistake and can now commit to improving the chipping as I have been shown what not to do AND how to correct it. Glad I was told to go to Chris Ryan Golf videos, you’re great!
Thanks Tony 👍👍
Hi Chris, excellent video, very clear instructions and rationale for using your choice of shot and set-up. Thank you.
another excellent video Chris, by far the best youtube coach, you explain everything in a fact based way without sensationalising it. none of this hit the ball 300 yards BS which most amateurs won't ever do. can you please do a video on launch angles of pitch shots. i.e i heard someone saying that whether you us a 60deg or 50 deg club you should look for the same launch angle (plus or minis 5deg) on chip to control distance but to me this seems counter intuitive surely the launch should change to control distance. given the same club head speed. thanks for the effort you put into your videos we love them
great video...I knew to come in at a steeper angle to avoid the grass behind the ball but did not consider opening the face for more height on the ball...thanks for the great tip :)
great points, presented in an understandable manner.....VERY good!
It's absolutely extraordinary how much good information you cram into these videos; I just watched Hank Haney's video on the same subject matter he gets a one out of 10 and you blew him out of the water Club shaft neutral at address the energy has to go somewhere open Club face, steeper angle of attack absolutely great stuff can't wait to try it.
Best video instructor on RUclips thanks Chris 👍
+Ken Knox thanks Keb
He's my favorite too!
Good video Chris. I played yesterday and struggled with chipping from the rough.
This is very good tutorial. Wrist action depends on a lie. I agree. And its working even for high hcprs.
That was a fantastic lesson, thank you! Great teacher!
Great stuff! I played a round yesterday and had a Tin Cup moment where I tried to chip/pitch out of the rough right next to a great but the green has a wicked up slope adjacent to the thick rough. 3 times on a row I chipped/pitched it out of the rough onto the wicked slope where the ball proceeded to roll right back down into location in the same green-side rough. So my 4th attempt I hit it too hard and it blew across the entire green and into the rough on the other the other side. Ended up taking a 10 on a Par 5 that I had reached in 2 and hoped for a birdie. Wish I had watched the video before that hole. Great tips!
Wonderful content. Much appreciated. Heading to the course pronto to work on it!
Very nice video! A few questions for you: with this set-up, do you open your stance as well so that the opened club face is aimed at the target, or do take a square stance? Also, do you take a normal swing path in relation to the body? Thanks again for great instruction.
lmao RIP headphone users from the gunshot in the intro. great vid tho I love the vids that help the low handicap golfer. not every video needs to be “5 ways to stop slicing ur driver” from golf digest. shows ur more concerned with actually helping golfers instead of going for millions of useless views. pls keep them coming
All of the setup & v-shape swing points shows just how much information is shared beyond the title of your videos and how extensive the thought process behind each golf shot for the best results.. always tricky with grass to determine the spin upon landing.. but as a drill i might suggest taking a dozen or so balls and observing the flight, spin & carry patterns to develop until you are confident and consistent tracking the ball toward the pin.. get that chip-in or setup for a birdie putt! cheers
Great video as usual Chris. Cheers mate.
When you open the club face is it pointing right of the target or straight at it?
as a mid to high handicapper i would have tried shot 2, but aim for a wider part of the green, yes you are putting from 40 ft but you have a good chace of 2 putts and only dropping one.
this video is really helpful. thanks
Great video! Thank you.
In those circumstances would you try to finish with the tee on the back of the glove pointing up or pointing more horizontal? I’m guessing if you point it up you can go higher with more momentum through the shot.
Excellent tip!
very clearly explained, should help me to shorten the rolling
great video thanks!
.... video suggestion pls...
50-100 pitch and run shots from soft fairway vs high flop drop shot from that distance.
Superb explanation thanks
cant wait to try it
Good video Two questions, 1 what if the grass is noticeably growing against the club and 2 what if it is even shorter and more down hill? Thanks
Hi Chris great videos. I'm hooked on your channel. You explain why you do things which is key for me. In most of your other videos you stress the importance of keeping the club face square at impact. Here you are opening the club face so why does the ball not shoot off to the right ?
Thanks Chris for this video. This shot is my nemesis but I have tools now to exact my revenge. lol
Excellent pitching fundamentals
Did the amount of bounce on the club play a factor? Information would be helpful. Thanks, enjoyed your video.
What loft/bounce club are you using?
Great tip!!!!
Would you use a high or low bounce club for that shot?
Nice video Chris good to see other growing golfers on here
Thanks MILES GH GOLF appreciate your comments

Thanks Chris. Did it go left because of grass or alignment?
Great lesson Chris, I've been struggling lately on my course where off the fairway is rough which is fairly long and springy so it grabs the club and I'm thinning the shot and losing distance even causing a shank. I've always used 7,8 9, or pitching wedge just to take my medicine and get back into play. I playing on championship courses so long and challenging and the semi rough is penal. Should I be breaking my wrists like in this video? Many thanks and keep the great videos coming!
Very good thanks
Do you need a wedge with high bounce for these shots?
Give it the ol' "karate chop", let's call it. I actually find it useful to name the various types of shots I know around the green for easy recall. Let's see, I have the "Jason Day" (very open wedge with a no wrist putting stroke), the "Fred Couples" ( big lazy swing with a slightly open face taking outside about 15 degrees the sort of dropping the right shoulder to get under it upon contact), the "Matt Kuchar" (inside to inside mid range chip when I want good crisp contact), etc...
EXCELLENT!
Nice.... Tip for sure....
What bounce would be best with these instructions? 6 bounce or higher degree of bounce?
Hi joe darby, from these situations i would suggest slightly higher as the appraoch angle can be a little steeper when played like this
The funny part about this video is that this golf hole, and shot looks like the exact same shot i flubbed on the course when i was trying to beat my lowest score. Same pin position and everything.
Do you take into account which way the grain of the grass is growing in the rough?
Does this technique apply to muddy lies around the green. Playing skins today and lost 😂 muddy lies around green cost me on 2 holes. Winter coming up soon so anyone feel free to let me know!!! Thanks
nice tips
So basically like a greenside bunker shot?
my first pro was a tour player who remarked, that when teaching, never tell a student what NOT to do. this stays in his or her mind
this is a niche topic in golf tho on the internet that had to be demonstrated. different situation entirely than getting a lesson in person
I wish the rough at my golf course was that short.
what about striking faster, getting well under it, popping it higher but with high backspin so that it lands just past the flag and then comes back towards it?
no further west that would be a bit more advanced technique.
Green has a downhill slope! You would be trying to Spin It Back Uphill.
And from that lie, over that short a distance that Much Spin CAN'T be generated.
It kind of slipped by me until I saw the comment below. I also agree... is that a gun-shot?... did someone drop a garbage can?... Weird....
What's with the gun shots at the beginning and end of the video? Otherwise, it's an excellent video.
Was just about to write the same thing. It made my dog run out of the room.
@@mikeh1817 GET REKT
What's up with the noise @ 0:01? Scared the bejesus out of me.
That 1st stroke scooted over the green !😊. 2nd way better.
Eh, you just yell out......Is this my ball?? I have to check. Pick up ball. Yep, this is my ball. Final step.....put ball back down all fluffy like. LOL
This is "Thick" rough?
If you do this chip and you have not practiced it a heap you will thin the ball at warp speed past the pin into one of your playing partners. I do NOT recommend this type of shot. If you have to make this type of shot from time to time on your course then practice the hell out of it. Then practice it again.
Hey, I think all shots need practice, short or full swing. Blading this over the green would require the low point to be shifted excessively forward, back or raised by a significant amount, which part of this technique do you think would cause either of those?
"how to kill your nemesis"
I will shank it everytime if I do this....
Misspelt encounter.
Ron Judd Watch out. Grammar police are here.
Could you fellows stop with the loud noises at the start and finish. Its made me jump out of my chair, twice.
taking too fast, can't understand, accent interference.
Hi Lewis, sorry about that, I’m afraid I may find it tricky to change my accent, hope you can pick up a few things from the visuals 👍
Then play it again and listen
Ur old as fuck lewis
This is not good.
Talk a lot wait for action.
Too much talking and less action. You will do well getting to the point and execute the shots.
man, Chris... life before the masks.....were your babies even born in 14 ??
Best you work some more on your chipping technique as that was a terrible result
