I remember when this thing was getting built in 2008, most people thought it was either going to be really good or really bad. And although I think the Sky Rocket II’s better fit that “tall compact coaster” niche as they are much more intense, I agree that this was one of the most bizarre coasters I had ever seen at the time and I definitely hope some other park can buy it.
It'll get bought - that won't be the issue. They are trying to save Indiana Beach and find a buyer for the whole park. It's a great asset. Apex ruined it.
With them closing I could see Indiana Beach selling this off cause it could have appeal with just lapbars to somewhere like Great Escape...Michigans Adventure or even Dorney
@@bobbysteele7640 I wouldn't be shocked if Six Flags St. Louis snapped it up. Cheap S&S, low capacity, natural fit for a Joker theme, but not a 4D Free Spin. This really shows how your review videos have evolved. Just before this, I watched your review of Nitro from like 4 years ago. A crazy difference and I am sure that your channel will continue to improve
The old reviews are a little cringey😬 the channel has definitely come far! I eventually hope to redo a bunch of those older reviews to make them a bit more watchable😂
I'm going to miss riding this ride! I rode it every Summer I went to Indiana Beach since it was built! It was my favorite ride ever at Indiana Beach with Double Shot in second place! Sadly Indiana Beach has permanently closed!
I rode it several times last year, and I realized that if you keep your arms up, those shoulder restraints actually aren't bad, even in the slightest. I had my arms down on my first ride, and those restraints bothered me, but keeping my arms up on every other ride, no issue at all. I didn't feel that the elements were too much, but for me, the crazier the element, the better. Alan Schilke truly is a genius, as the designer of this ride. This was my 2nd favorite in the park, just behind Cornball Express.
Great review! I agree El Loco is the better coaster. I also agree that this is the best steel coaster, 3rd best coaster at Indiana Beach for me behind Cornball and Lost Coaster. I do prefer El Loco to Mystery Mine.
Yeah, when I went 2 years ago I was surprised at how uncomfortable it is. Great layout for small parks, former world record holder, and a lot of room for a better ride experience if it was just lapbars and a seat belt. The hard plastic is rough, you hit your head sometimes. I’d give it a 7/10, but definitely the best in the park. It’ll probably be sold off to another smaller park, perhaps Michigan’s Adventure, ValleyFair, Six Flags America?
I've been on the clone of this in the UK (Mumbo Jumbo @ Flamingo Land) and have to say it's still one of my favourite coasters in the UK. Some of my best memories of this ride was when the weather was rubbish so there was very few people at the park, so I just rode it again and again and again.
There is also a clone of this coaster in the French park Fraispertuis city called "Timber drop". Since this park is located in a narrow valley, the compactness of the coaster is a blessing. Moreover, this version has a better looking environment since the theme of the ride is logging. The wagon drops in a giant log, so the steep drop is even more impressive. It is definitively one of my favorite coasters!
So when i worked at IB, one of my leads did mention to me that the ride was originally opened without the weird over the shoulder things. I have no idea how accurate that was though because i tried finding information backing that up but failed to do so. I will say though, this and double shot were my favorite rides to operate there.
@@michellemoore6548 I've kinda figured cuz it sounded super out there. Especially for this ride. People complained about the shoulder restraints all the time lmao
Interesting timing, Indiana Beach announced its closure just last week! I've ridden it twice. Always felt uneasy about the two inversions without g-forces. I don't like putting 100% of my faith in my restraints.
Yeah those togo restraints seem to be an early model only issue, since only the first 3 ones (Steel Hawg, Mumbo Jumbo and Timber drop) have them, whereas the 3 newest ones (Green Lantern, Crazy Bird and El Loco) have lap bars only.
Such a shame the park this ride is in has closed. The park, if still open for 6 more years, would have been 100 years old. A unique title, in my opinion.
Shame to see Indiana Beach closed but Steel Hawg and the rest of Indiana Beach Crew of roller Coaster will live on Thanks to Coaster Enthusiast RUclipsr's.
Green Lantern in Movie World, Australia is an El Loco coaster. It doesn’t look as forceful as this one. But GL features 8 passenger cars (2 rows of 4) and it uses lap bars!! I haven’t ridden any other El Locos other than Green Lantern. But it is a very fun ride!!
insane airtime, better than the Eurofighters that I've done. It is a very quick pop, then you're right back down, but it's a strong pop. Monster's (an Infinity coaster) drop was slightly better, probably just because of the lap bars only.
5:27 yeah I'm sure Indiana beach is going to do a train upgrade after the recent announcement they made. That being said, I really hope cedar fair or Six flags or some chain buys this ride. What I really hope for is for CF to buy it and ship it to worlds of fun, would be a cheap investment in the park, it's my home park and it hasn't had any love since 2009. I could also see them shipping it to Michigan's adventure or maybe valley Fair.
Sebastian Lucas that line was more referring to whoever possesses that ride in the future; whether it’s new owners for the park or the ride relocated to somewhere else.
JRax 17 unfortunately I don’t have enough footage of either ride to really cover a review. I didn’t shoot as much as I should’ve during my one visit to the park.
I agree with the restraints since I have ridden this many times since I live 30min away from the park. However, I would give this ride around a 7.5 just because it's a very unique ride and was my first inverting roller coaster. Even though the cars are very small with only 4 seats, the back row gives some very nice airtime over the drop after the ride has warmed up. It's sad that the park is now closed and I hope that some smaller park or park chain will buy Steel Hawg and put it in a smaller park. #SixFlags St. Louis 2021
Hey Taylor, could you do a review of Rise of the Resistance? I know you don't do reviews of dark rides often, but I think this should be an exception by just how amazing it is.
i'm a huge fan of wild mouse coasters (im from aus, we have one of the last remaining wooden wild mice, i love that dinky little coaster) and i'm of the firm opinion that a thrill wild mouse is JUST a good idea, especially as a first thrill coaster for younger teens.
Green lantern is my favourite version. Exactly same layout, with better trains that sit 8 people per train. The only con is the horrible jolt as the train connects to the lift hill.
The 4 across trains make it so much better than the other el loco's. I've done mumbo jumbo and green lantern and my God the difference in ride experience between mumbo and green lantern is wild. The far right seats of green lantern just step it up that extra notch with the laterals and the lap bars are way comfier.
When I was in line I was scared as heck but the ride in my opinion is actually the best one at Indiana beach but when u get on the ride it is just so fun I give a 10/10 btw this is just my opinion pls don’t hate

We have the Green Lantern Coaster at Warner Bros. Movie World in Australia which has lap bars. Was great fun when it first opened however it's aged pretty poorly over the years. The last time I rode it was 2017 when it was about 6 years old and the brakes hit so suddenly they gave you back whiplash and the downward inversion was a little painful in the uh... special male area (which also happened to be where on-ride photos are taken, go figure lmao).
