  • New for 2024 is a massive Schwarzkopf multi looper relocated from Mexico City after a horrible accident. The ride was refurbished and given new trains, opening 3 years later than planned. Despite Indiana Beach's best efforts, the ride is still not in great shape, and that became very apparent very fast. Let's dive into the problems with All American Triple Loop and what would make it better.

An exciting update from Indiana Beach! They recently announced the removal of the rides uncomfortable over the shoulder harnesses, which were one of the major problems with the coaster! this is a big step in the right direction and we're thrilled Indiana Beach heard all of our criticisms and decided to do something about it!

Indiana Beach didn't do that, it was standing all day in the scorching hot mexico sun, with the track and supports being under more stress due to the ride being ran faster than normal, for years. That's gonna take a toll on any ride. Similar thing happened to Thriller/Texas Tornado when it ran in Six Flags decades ago.

I rode Thriller the week it opened in 1986 and a strange feeling in my neck for a week. Not all Schwarzkopf rides are smooth or "healthy" - they were always part of an aggressive fair circuit market that was prone to an unhealthy logic of "outbidding". Look at today's flat rides- they seem like pure "torture" to me.
But the original triple loop was kind of a sweet spot - super thrilling and thoroughly enjoyable. Too bad they could not rescue it!

    • @stellaVista
      @stellaVista 3 месяца назад

@@-E42- I rode Dreier Loop in its opening year in 1984 (Oktoberfest) and Thriller in 86 (Cranger Kirmes). Dreier was totall smooth with only a lapbar. The first drop was AMAZING!
Thriller was a real beast though! I came off it and thought I had just been recruited for a NASA training program.
In it´s first year they had just a lap-bar and a leather strip (like you sometimes find on Dodgem cars). But the ride attendents didn´t even advise you to wear it.
The real problem with Thriller was the final loop, which was some strange loop/corkscrew hybrid. Your body would just SLAM sideways. They reprofiled this several times and then retrofitted those nasty accordeon restraints.
I really think they should try to get therir hands on a regular Schwarzkopf train with shared axels.
These coasters are designed to run 5-7 car trains and not those 3-front-car-trains. They have totally different dynamics!
I would usually say: get rid of the shoulder bars, but seeing the footage here, I guess it would be quite dangerous if there was just a lapbar.
      What a mess!

Mindbender had different trains at the time of its accident, and changed trains shortly after, and All American Triple Loop's trains were Mindbenders redesigned trains, the original Mindbender trains had 4 cars (the very last one was reversed) but after the accident in 86, it had 3 cars with a redesign, and those are the same trains in Indiana Beach today. • @GregPeden

I lived in Alberta and rode Mindbender many times... the operations there were horrendous mostly because of how much time and brute force effort it took to prepare the restraints. Operators rightfully became tired having to wrestle them all day so they moved very slowly. Before it closed they'd be lucky to get 10 trains out in an hour.
The restraints are over-designed because of Mindbender's accident in the 1980's. Those are not the original trains - in order to reassure the public new trains were provided with those triple restraints which included the addition of those horrible shoulder restraints. You'll also notice that the trains have double redundant wheel assemblies (each car has 4 sets by itself). This was done because the accident was caused by a wheel assembly falling off (which seems to be a common thing with Schwarzkopf). This made the cars longer and heavier, so the trains were reduced by one car to accommodate the changes.

Honestly I think the train might be the issue, not because of the wheel assembly but the train assembly. The old traditional Schwarzkopf trains had the trailing cars hanging off the car preceeding it. That meant the wheels were spaced far apar and allows the cars to twist greatly without issue. Whereas the frankensteined mindbender trains feature several sets of axles close together. And that means the trains might not be able to take the snappy transitions, especially the sharply curved drops very well. Its not like these transitions are unique to Mindbender, lots of other Schwarzkopfs have them whether it be Olympia Looping, Alpina Bahn, Jetline (rip), and Thriller/Zonga (also rip). Plus Ive heard others mention that it was still smoother while in Mexico than at Indiana Beach. So it cant be the trackprofiling.
On Mindbender the trains handling of the transitions may not have been an issue since that ride is larger and as such each element is more drawn out, but Triple loop by comparison is much more compact. So I think it might be putting excessive forces onto some of the wheel bogies, which get yanked into the rest of the vehicles. Might also be why the front seats of each are are smoother, since the rear seats are closer to the wheel bogies.
I think there are 3 possible solutions for this.
    1. Order new trains with the conventional setup, Gerstlauer would likely be willing to do so.
    2. Extend the distance between each car in the train by extending the coupler. That way the wheels are spaced further apart, but it might cause additionals stress on said coupler.
    3. Modify the trains restraints, namely the over the shoulder accordion so that the rough moments arent handled as badly.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Indiana Beach both times I've visited, and I was very much hoping that this ride would be a success. It's so sad to see that it hasn't been. I hope it can be made more tolerable. Having ridden Frontier City's Silver Bullet so many times, I can say that there is a violent lateral jolt leading into the loop, but because we only have seatbelts & lap bars, it's no problem at all. Head/neck banging restraints can totally ruin some rides.
After the reports of Triple Loop, I honestly don't want to ride it, not even once for the credit. Even hearing the advice of how to ride it, I don't trust that it won't still cause me problems. I was planning to ride it in a couple weeks, but I now probably won't.

@@staringcorgi6475 That's horrible. Unfortunately even with anti-rollbacks there was still an accident on the Wildcat coaster in Tulsa, OK because the park maintenance had not been properly trained and used an inferior plastic to repair the latch system under the cars. One person died, but it was also because the operator released the second car before the first one was over the lift hill, so the cars collided. Because of this, my family was so scared that I was 14 before I ever rode a "real" rollercoaster.
With only having one train, this "new" rollercoaster should be safe from that, though.

Mike of Canobie Coaster gives it a 7 and I seem to have identical taste to him from his other reviews, so will trust that. He says to sit upright with back as straight as possible against seat and push shoulder pads as low as they will go. He didn't give it "only" a 7 because it's rough, he gave it a 7 because the coaster's intensity is way down from what it was previously, so had it been faster and more intense he would have rated it even higher. When it was Quimera in Mexico he rated it a 10. That had lap bar only 4 car trains though.
Indiana Beach bought the train from Mindbender Galaxyland. I don't think it's their fault, I think any issues stem from the train in this case.
By the way, you guys haven't ridden rough. Seriously you haven't. I've watched all your coaster videos since your channel first started.
If you want to know what ROUGH was, try imagine the long gone HERCULES (old woodie) at Dorney Park as one of the roughest coasters in history, or SOB @ King's Island (Hercules was rougher).
One of the most painful steel coasters I rode was Desperado in Nevada. In 1998 it wasn't too bad but in 2005 it was a disaster and you had to brace and protect your kidneys and ride very defensively. Magnum XL 200 is very smooth by comparison.
Hercules gave me a prolapsed disc and I was bed bound in the hotel for 7 days after. That's what rough is. My friend had a migraine for 4 days and he's never had an issue on any other ride. He was vomiting and was constantly on meds to relieve it. I was rubbing Bengay into my lower back every two hours and taking anti inflammatory drugs and Vicodin the doctor prescribed, and was very lucky it healed quickly so my body never got "used" to the Vicodin, therefore I was instantly able to stop.. Sure, I was just unlucky for my disc to bulge to begin with, but years later I found out I have early degenerating disc disease and need to be very careful what I rode from then on. Point is, I'd have no qualms trying American Triple Loop when I visit IB again next year. :))

I feel like the old guy who says, " when I was a kid", but here goes it! When I was younger and riding what remained of the golden age of coasters in the seventies and a bit into the eighties, coasters were rough. It was the thrill. You weren't on a kids ride. It was the roller coaster! I get the over shoulder harness thing, but the comment on here about Hercules being the roughest ever makes me realize that through attrition, coaster riders have been spoiled and don't realize the "sport" of riding any more! If it isn't buttery smooth, folks hate it! Times have changed indeed, but a little pain is the medal you earn for going on the big kids rides! Lol. But when I see reviews on rides like thunder hawk at dorney being extremely rough, I think about it before the trim brakes were added. Not hating on anybody, but expectations have really changed!

Its really sad to hear, that this coaster is soo rough. I wouldn't compare it to Olympia Looping though, as Olympia Looping was not manufactured by Schwarzkopf himself, instead BHS has manufactured it. Also Olympia Looping is much younger compared to All American Triple Loop. Still I experienced "Teststrecke" around 6 years ago on the german fairs multiple times and this coaster is quite as old as All American Triple Loop and was also nearly glass smooth. But what you need to consider in that case are the new trains, that were put onto Testsrecke. But I could really see also the trains as one of the problem, if the wheels are to hard they could lead to massive vibrations (See Voltron for example). Also if you take a look into the video at 5:55 / 5:56 it looks like the fins (for the lift) under the car are totally vibrating. SO maybe the problem is really a combination of the high stress due to the brakes not beeing used for years and the bad trains.

I also have to wonder if it would have been rough, but slightly more tolerable with just the traditional lap bar

The restraint thing is not one that is very easily fixed though; if the riders have too much lateral movement, then no OTSR means that they could potentially be bashing into each other. In Mexico the laterals were brutal, but the vest harnesses (think High School backpack straps) made it at least comfortable to ride, even though it was running much faster than it was designed for. Trying to replicate those may be the best option if they want to try and improve rider comfort, because just eliminating them when they are dealing with sudden lateral jukes is not a recipe for good results.
Those throwing shade on the trains; the Mindbender trains are all front cars, which means they have extra safety during laterals. Lateral failures (back car derailment) is what caused the deaths on both Mindbender and this ride when it was in Mexico, and in Mexico, the way the ride was run (way too fast for the design; zero brakes) was very likely the cause of failure. These trains should be safe for the track, it's just making them comfortable for the riders.

AT LEAST ITS HERE AT ALL. people keep bagging it for no reason. its old leave it alone. sure there's been some accidents. but you still drive on the highway despite the accidents that have happened there.... very click bait title
